VP OF STUDENT SERVICES

Welcome to the 2010 Warrior Softball season! Last year’s Warriors placed second at the NWAACC Championship tournament. With nine sophomores on this year’s team, the War-riors bring experience and a strong desire to once again be in the champion-ship game the end of May 2010. Our freshmen have

been recruited to complement a strong returning lineup and Coach Staudenmaier will once again be challenging his team to continue the winning tradi-tion of Warrior Softball, as female student-athletes compete at a high level on the field and in the classroom. We look forward to a busy and exciting season and hope to see you at the ballpark support-ing our Warriors.

42009 2nd Place NWAAACC Championships

2009 Sophmore All-Stars

SEASON PREVIEW

The 2010 Warriors look to continue an established tradition of success. Returning 6 starting sophomores from a season ago and having a talented recruiting class of newcomers, the Warriors will have a great chance to compete for an Eastern Region and NWAACC Title in head coach Mike Staudenmaier’s 13th season.

Staudenmaier begins this season after a very successful season where the Warriors made it, again, to the NWAACC Championships placing 2nd. This team already has great chemistry and a desire to win two championships this spring. The Warriors know how to win and have a better understanding of how to win the Eastern Region. They have set their sights on the Eastern Region and NWAACC Crowns.

“The players have what it takes to reach our goal this season - To win the Eastern Region Championship and to make the NWAACC Championship and win it,” Staudenmaier said. “We know it’s a battle in the East and NWAACC and our players believe in what we’re trying to do”. “We have a disciplined, competitive group of newcomers and our veterans are extremely motivated and proven winners. “This is a good club, great coaching staff and it’s going to be a fun season”.

Pitching – One sophomore returns, Elayna Van Hess (RHP/OF), who pitched in the circle last spring, winning 10 games in 2009. Van Hess was a 2nd Team All NWAACC East selection and also made the sophomore all Star Team this fall. She also plays OF. Van Hess is a competitor and we look for her to have a great year this year with the added depth to our staff. Alexis Bobadilla (RHP/OF) was one of the Warriors top recruits this past year. Bobadilla will pitch and also play OF. These two will be both in the top five for best pitchers in the NWAACC. We are looking for good things from them. If they do their jobs, we will win a lot of games.

Catcher – The Warriors return Shaila Rivers who takes care of the staff really well. Rivers was a 1st Team All NWAACC East selection, sophomore All Star and made the All Tournament Team in 2009. Oshana Sampson was one other fresh-man catcher recruited this season and will see some time behind the plate. These are two good catchers. Both kids compete well and both are excited to be catching two of the top pitchers in the NWAACC.

Infield – Walla Walla’s defense -- led by sophomore Lyndsey Minnich (3B) and (SS) Kelsie Didion. Minnich was a 1st Team All NWAACC selection, sophomore All Star and made the All Tournament Team in 2009. Didion was also a 1st Team All NWAACC selection and a sophomore All Star In 2009. Other returning players are Kathryn Jones and Jill Haney. These are two very good athletes who will see time at (2B), running and pinch hitting. Recruited in is sophomore transfer Danyelle Hutchison (1B). Hutchison played in 2009 at North Idaho College. We are very happy and excited Danyelle chose to come here this year. She will help this club immensely! Ashley Morrow (SS) and Jessica Logan (2B) are two very exciting players to watch and will see action this spring.

Outfield – The Warriors have four sophomores returning in the outfield. They are Natalie Leyland, Elayna Van Hess, Kayla Hutcheson and Fran Leyland. Natalie Leyland was a 1st Team All NWAACC selection, sophomore All Star and made the All Tournament Team. Natalie was also awarded a NFCA/NWAACC Louisville All American. Van Hess, Hutcheson and Fran Leyland all played spots out in the outfield last year helping the 2009 club to a 2nd place finish at the NWAACC Tournament. Recruited in were Alexis Bobadilla, Alaura Seley, Ramey Chambers and Shelbi King. Both Chambers and King will play some INF as well. Also Ada Kwaidah will do some utility play for the Warriors this spring playing both INF and OF and pinch running a lot.

Schedule – The NWAACC Eastern Region will again be a grueling year. All of the teams are capable in making it to the NWAACC Championships. But before Walla Walla embarks on the conference schedule, it will spend most of its preseason schedule against great competition, including dates with Chemeketa, Shoreline, SW Oregon and Eastern Or-egon, a four year school the competes in the NAIA at home and the likes of Lower Columbia and Mt. hood on the road.

MIkE STAudENMAIER

HEAd COACH BA, Whitworth University 1991

Years Coaching at WWCC : 13

Career Coaching Highlights:

• 12 year record at WWCC 354-219

• (.618 winning percentage)

• 9 NWAACC tournament Appearances - placed 5th or higher in all 9

• One NWAACC Eastern Region Championship; One NWAACC Championship Runner-up

Coach Staudenmaier begins his thirteenth season at the helm of the Lady Warriors with a career record of 354W-219L. After five successful seasons as a head assistant coach in the Warriors Baseball program, Coach Staudenmaier continues WWCC’s winning ways on the softball diamond.

In his five years as head assistant coach, Coach Staudenmaier served as the pitching coach for four Eastern Region champi-onship teams. The 1994 Warriors were NWAACC runner up.

Prior to returning to Walla Walla, Coach Staudenmaier was part of four straight NAIA District One winners as a coach and play-er at Whitworth. He registered saves in each Pirate victories during a best-of-three District One playoff series in 1989 and 1990.

In the mid and late 80’s, Coach Staudenmaier starred at Walla Walla High School in football and baseball. He was also selected to the NWAACC Eastern Region first team as a pitcher for Walla Walla Community College, where he earned an A.A. degree in 1988.

Coach Staudenmaier’s coaching experience includes two years as WWCC’s assistant women’s basketball coach. The 1994-95 and 1995-96 Lady Warriors qualified for the NWAACC Eastern Region playoffs. Away from the field, Coach Staudenmaier’s lengthy resume includes his current tenure as head trainer for Warrior athletics, supervisor of WWCC’s athletic facilities, head equipment manager, and instructor of sports medicine classes. Despite the hectic schedule, Coach Staudenmaier is setting time aside to pursue a master’s degree in athletic administration.

A positive role model, teacher, and coach, Coach Staudenmaier expects his team to contend for the NWAACC Eastern Division and NWAACC titles. In his first two years with the softball program he tallied two 20 plus win seasons and the 2000 club had a 39-8 mark in his third year. In 2001, the team went 25-21 and placed fourth at the NWAACC Championship Tournament. The 2002 team went 36-11 overall, and won the Eastern Re-gion Softball title, with a 25-5 league record, for the first time in school history and placed 5th at the NWAACC Tournament. The Warriors went to the NWAACC Tourna-ment in 2003 (5th place), 2005 (3rd place) and 2006 (5th place). In 2007 the Warriors went 39-18 with a 5th place finish at the tournament. The 2008 Warriors set a school record with 41 wins and only 17 loses and finish-ing 4th at the NWAACC tournament. Last year’s 2009 Warriors went 37-19 and finished 2nd at the NWAACC Championships, the programs highest finish ever. Coach Staudenmaier’s teams compete and are very prepared at the NWAACC Championship Tour-naments. In his twelve years at the helm, he has had 16 NFCA/NWAACC All-Americans, 1 North Eastern Region MVP, 2 Eastern Region MVP’s, and 3 Eastern Region Pitching MVP’s. He has also had 40 1st Team All NWAACC players, 23 2nd Team All NWAACC players, and 56 sophomore All-Stars. 11 of his players have made the All NWAACC Tournament team, and 23 players have been awarded the NFCA All American Academic award. One catcher has been voted Diamond National Catcher of the Year. Coach Staudenmaier was awarded the prestigious Speedline National Coach of the Year award in 2000. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association presented the award in San Antonio, Texas at their National Convention. In October of 2009, Coach Staudenmaier and the Warrior Softball program had a featured article done on them by the National Fastpitch Delivery, a publication by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Coach Staudenmaier has totaled an amazing 354 victories in 12 seasons at the helm of the Warriors. With all of these accomplishments, he is also very proud of how his players have maintained a team GPA over a 3.0 each quarter for the 12 years he has coached.

WWCC softball player Natalie Leyland to play for British national team

Walla Walla Community College center fielder Natalie Leyland has been tabbed to play on Great Britain’s national softball team playing in the world championships in Venezuela this summer.

DAN GROOM Walla Walla Union-BulletinWALLA WALLA - One of the top 16 softball players in the nation plays for Walla Walla Community College.Yes, in the nation. No, not this nation. The other Red, White and Blue. The Union Jack. Great Britain. And who is this player, you might ask?Natalie Leyland. Of Richland.Confused?Let Leyland straighten you out.“I’m from the northwest of England,” she said. “It’s a village called Goswood, between Liverpool and Manchester. My dad works for Hanford, the nuclear power plant. He used to travel all over. For a while he worked in Norway. Then he got a job out here, so my family and I decided to come out here to live with him.”Leyland, a 2008 Richland High graduate and WWCC’s starting center fielder, recently got the ultimate call-up from her birth country. The British Softball Federation announced March 6 that Leyland and 15 others were chosen for the national team that will repre-sent Great Britain at the 12th International Softball Federation Women’s Fastpitch World Championships in Caracas, Venezuela. The tournament, which runs from June 23-July 2, includes the world’s top teams, including the USA, Japan, China and Chinese Taipei.“I’m so excited,” Leyland said. “I’m going to fly out on the 12th (of June) to Florida for training camp for a week. We’ll play around Orlando and scrimmage teams down there. Then, I fly out to Venezuela and my first game is against Japan.“The one thing I’m really looking forward to is playing the Olympic champions (Japan). I’m hoping to get in there and at least foul off one ball from their pitcher,” Leyland, a .556 hitter, said, laughing. This isn’t the first go-round for the 20-year-old on Her Majesty’s softball squad. When she was 17, her family returned to Britain, and the high school senior-to-be became the youngest member of the 2007 national team.Because of the distance, the British coaches had to rely on what they remembered of Ley-land - and on the word of her current WWCC

coach, Mike Staudenmaier - in determining her ability to play again at the national level. In that area, Leyland said, Staudenmaier helped her immensely.“They knew she was a good player,” Staudenmaier said. “But they called me and wanted to know how she had developed.“I’m pretty honest with people, so I told them how it was,” he said. “She’s worked really hard in the weight room and developed her game and is getting stronger, so that she can put balls in the gap now. Coming out of high school, she was a little bit weak in putting the balls out there a little farther.“I just told her coach, that for me or for Seattle University (where Leyland is plan-ning to attend next year), she’s going to play center field,” Staudenmaier said. “Being on a national team, playing against the United States or Japan, you’re probably going to have to have her out in left (field). That’s probably her biggest weakness - her (lack of) arm strength in being able to throw somebody out from center. She would probably fit better in left where she can cover a lot of ground, but still get the ball in.”For now, Leyland is enjoying the moment playing for Staudenmaier and with her older sister, Francesca. Fran, who helped convince Natalie to join her at WWCC with mutual friend and, now Warrior alum, Liz Homer, has no doubts about who the better player is.“At softball, she’s a way better player than I am, I’ll tell you that one,” Fran said with a quick and easy chuckle. “We have that rela-tionship where we’re close in age, but some-times we have those fights. We’re the only two on the team that coaches Jesse (Buehler) and Katie (Buehler) say that, if they fight, it’s OK in the dugout.“But when things go wrong, we’re really close,” Fran continued. “I am so happy for her (to make the team). She deserves it, that’s for sure.”Sadly, the World Championships are the highest level Natalie Leyland and softballers from around the world are now allowed to play. As of 2008, the International Olympic Committee dropped softball as an Olympic event. That hits Natalie and her fellow Brits especially hard.“It really sucks, because the 2012 Olympics are in London,” she said. “The home team gets an automatic berth, so we would have been the team that got to go to the Olympics.

We would have been playing in our home country, and I would have been an Olympic athlete. It’s a bummer that you don’t get the opportunity to do that.“I think it’s kind of funny, because some of the sports that are left in the Olympics are definitely not as much of a sport as softball.”Her college coach believes she’s Olympic material even if the IOC doesn’t.“Defensively, she covers lots of ground,” Staudenmaier said. “A ball hit in the gap that you wouldn’t see most kids in the NWAACC get to, she goes and gets. That’s why she’s going to the next level. That’s why she’s on the British National Team.“Her offense speaks for itself,” he said. “She’s so fast and has such good hand-eye coordination. She’s only struck out once this year. She only struck out twice last year. That’s big. And her baserunning - she had 20 stolen bases last year.”The Warriors, who are off to a disappointing 7-10 start, will need more of that superior play from Leyland and fellow stars Alexis Bobadilla, Shaila Rivers, Danyelle Hutchison and Lyndsey Minnich if they hope to compete for an NWAACC tournament title at the end of May.But whether they do or don’t, Leyland faces a whole new season come June. A battle against Pac-10 seniors and militarily drilled 30-year-olds from Asia, on a playfield situated in a multi-million-person metropolis, with a tropi-cal climate, in a sometimes dangerous Third World nation, awaits.“I got an e-mail saying Venezuela is known for kidnapping and muggings, and we might have a military escort or police escorts,” Leyland said. “That part made me a little bit nervous.”Those nerves, though, will certainly fade away in her first appearance at the plate. And the first pitch coming off the arm of that Japanese pitcher?Slap hit through the left of the infield and a huge smile standing at first.Count on it.

LIgHT CEREMONY

Spearheaded by Walla Walla County Commissioner Greg Tompkins, the baseball and softball fields on the campus of WWCC were lit up for the first time on May 10, 2008. Tompkins, the father of former-Warrior star Michael Tompkins, worked closely with WWCC Presi-dent Steve Van Ausdle to raise money and awareness for this project. A significant amount of money for this project was also donated by Walla Walla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball Association. The fields will now be used by numerous youth baseball and softball teams from the Walla Walla Valley as well as the WWCC base-ball and softball teams. The installation of these lights has expanded the use of these fields as community fields and will allow the community to host state and regional tournaments, which will attract people from all over the state and region to Walla Walla.

We all greatly appreciate the time, effort, and money put forth by Commissioner Tompkins, President Van Ausdle, Walla Walla Valley Youth Baseball and Softball, and all who contributed to and supported achieving the dream of “Turning the Lights on for Youth Baseball and Softball.”

1ST ANNuAL OLd TIMERS ALuMNI gAME

On October 11, 2008 the Warrior Softball Family welcomed back 17 for-mer players, coaches and a super fan, to participate in the 1st Annual Old Timers Alumni Games. The doubleheader was held in the evening hours to show off the new lights on Warrior Field. The stands were packed with friends and family who witnessed a well played game, eventually won by the 2009 Warriors, 3-1 & 5-0. We are already looking forward to and planning next year’s Alumni Weekend with the baseball team, and are hoping to see many more of the old players. The plan is to add more events to the weekend in the future including a golf tournament.
