MINUTES

RMVTA Meeting August 10, 2017

Submitted by Lisa ‘Chicken Hawk’ McGee, Secretary President Debbie Maynard called the meeting to order at 7:08. There were no visitors. Officer’s Reports Secretary: The July meeting minutes as captured by Debbie were approved by all. Treasurer: Floyd Thorne reported $5,120.99 in checking. Committee Reports

Finance: Finished for the 2017 fiscal year. Historical: Nothing new. Membership and Member Relations:

Floyd & Linda will be going to Floyd’s 50th High School Reunion this month. They went, with their son Patrick, to Durango and rode the Durango Silverton Train. Floyd worked the Ironman race in Boulder and happened to be following the winning female racer. Johnny Groot went on a 3,500 mile motorcycle trip to Florida to see his mother and visited assorted states. Debbie & two friends had an “unofficial” 35th H.S. Reunion in Vail while Paul replaced his truck’s alternator & gave his “pound of flesh” in doing so. Bill and Becky texted hello to the meeting! HELLO

back—we miss you guys!

Bernie & Elaine got moved into their new condo in Broomfield (as of today!) Lisa gets a new right knee on September 18. She will also be attending a NASCAR race at Richmond Motor Speedway in September. Send updates and information about club members or their

families to Bernie and Elaine at: [email protected] Newsletter: August was published and included a couple of great ride write-ups. Thanks for the great submissions! Articles & Pictures for the Newsletter are

welcomed from all. Deadline for submissions is the 23rd. Website and Webmaster: Paul reported 20,316 hits to the website in July with the 2nd & 22nd being the highest days hit. Ride Center, Meetings & Newsletter were the top three locations. The international top hits were: Czech Republic (1,000), Germany (93), Russian Federation (60) and Belgium (26). Rides/Activities:

Recaps of Past Rides: Moonlight Ride occurred July 8. The participants rode to Estes Park for dinner and a leisurely stroll through Rocky Mountain National Park. July 15 was the MultiPass ride led by Steve

Benko. Riders included Floyd and Mac. July 23 was the Paradise Cove Hike and water hole. Paul braved the rocks and took a dive into the tepid water. Okay, maybe not so tepid but brisk. His voice octave should be lowering soon. August 12 was the Rifle Gap Falls day ride. UPCOMING

August 18: Brainard Lake picnic ride. August 24: Dinner ride hosted by Mac. August 26: Twist ‘n’ Shout Sept. 9 & 10: Ouray Camping Trip Sept. 23 & 24: Annual Fall Color Ride Old Business None. New Business The Christmas Party will be here before we know it. After some discussion, the tentative date will be Sat., Dec 2. Due to small attendance numbers and the amount of organization it takes to keep the club running as is, the officers want to open up a discussion on the future of the club. Members are encouraged to think of and share any modifications or changes that could be made. Missing Link Skipped: we’ve just gotten too smart to get caught doing silly things. 50/50 No raffle held. Treats Debbie brought veggies, chips and yummy homemade salsa for the July meeting. Lisa volunteered to bring treats to the next meeting.

Rifle Gap Falls Submitted By: Floyd Thorne

It is Saturday morning and just beautiful. We met at the Loaf-N-Jug just off Highway 93 and Iowa Drive in Golden, CO. Everyone was geared up properly for the cooler temps that we anticipated at high altitudes. It was now time to depart. Paul elected to lead our little group. We discussed on the CB the option to take Highway 6 up the canyon. All in agreement we pointed the machines to the west. I choose to believe that we missed a lot of heavy slow traffic typically encountered on I-70 west bound on a Saturday morning. That’s my story and I am sticking to it. After an enjoyable trip on the twisties and through the tunnels we merged onto I-70 just east of Idaho Springs. By then the traffic on I-70 had figured out that they were on an interstate and drove accordingly. We made our way to Rifle, CO where we stopped to top off the fuel tanks for our return trip home a bit later in the early afternoon. We also discussed our midday nourishment options and decided to get something in-tow rather than getting picnic provisions. After lunch we made our way north out of town and to the Rifle Gap Recreation area. It was pretty busy there and parking was at a premium but the bikes were easily able to find safe parking. We went a short distance and were soon greeted with beauty and the mist of the Falls. You can actually get below and under the Falls for a really different

view. From there we went on a bit of a hike up and around to the top of the Falls and on around the other side to make a complete loop. We could see from the top that the weather was looking a bit ominous causing us to decide it was time to start our journey home. After gearing up and heading out

of the area we took a two lane road that wound us around and eventually dropped us into New Castle, CO where we picked up I-70 east bound. At Eagle, CO it seemed to be a good decision and opportunity to get into rain gear. We were still a considerable distance from home and it looked imminent that we could get wet. Just how much was the

question. We encountered rain in various degrees until we passed through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then on the East side of the Continental Divide it was dry. Now it was just a matter of dealing with the ever increasing volume of traffic as we grew ever closer to the metro area and heading home. It was another beautiful day. We were discussing it between us and we’re not sure if this was the first or second time all season that we got into rain gear. Not that we haven’t encountered a little rain here and there but nev-er enough to stop and get into rain gear. Don’t you just love Colorado? Hope to see you on the next outing.

Yes, YOU!

The RMVTA is accepting volunteers and nominations for new leadership. Opportunities abound for leading our motley crew (prez), recording the ins ‘n’ outs of our monthly meetings (secretary), counting up and keeping track of our funds (treasurer). Don’t wait, these Prestigious Officer Positions are sure to go fast! OK, perhaps a bit more sluggish than fast but we’d still love to talk with you about the responsibilities…! Elections held at the November meeting.

Plan B-ike Submitted By: Floyd Thorne

On August 19 a small group of RMVTA riders met at the Phillips 66 in Morrison with all good intentions of going to Brainard Lake Recreation Area for a hike, picnic lunch and to admire the beautiful views of the lake and surrounding area. We got to the Fee Gate (or some ways behind it and around a corner) and came to a complete stop. There was a young lady that got out of her car behind us and jogged up to check on the status of things and when she returned gave us a report. It looked as though a huge number of people had similar intentions on this given day as the park was full and we were in the line waiting for people to depart. After very short deliberations a U-turn was in order and the implementation of “Plan B” was now in effect. I made a left and we headed to Estes Park to find a park or someplace to enjoy our picnic lunches. As it turned out, not all of our party had picnic provisions on board so we opted to go to The Other

Side restaurant for our midday nourishment. Once we left our lunch venue we went out of town back behind the Stanley Hotel and took a really fun road that takes you through Glen Haven and then to Drake. At Drake we turned left and headed down the hill. Near the bottom I turned right and eventually went by Carter Lake where a lot of folks and various water craft were enjoying a beautiful hot day playing in the nice cool water. I continued wandering around on two lane county roads with very little traffic headed south towards the Denver metro area. I broke away from the group and headed east on the north end and the rest of the group continued on south to their respective homes. It was a beautiful day and all turned out good after

all. As always, so good to get out and enjoy a beautiful Colo-rado day, good roads, good company and camaraderie.
