The other day a new DodgeChallenger passed me onthe road. It got me thinking

— number one about how I se-cretly hated the lucky fella whogot to drive it, and number twoabout how cool it is that muscle isback in the American auto indus-tr y.

It’s refreshing to see new mod-els mixing vintage muscle withmodern technology. Back in mydad’s day (which from what I un-derstand was several hundreds ofages ago), there were beefed upmuscle cars everywhere. Thiswent on until the early 70s, whentightened emissions require-ments and a more responsible en-vironmental attitude put the gascap on the whole ordeal.

But now, muscle is the newblack. Car shoppers are once

again looking for performance intheir daily drivers. During the 80smy dad’s top requirement for ourvehicles was trunk space. Now hehas a 5.4L 320 horsepower enginein his F-150, which makes himgrin when he hits the accelerator.

I imagine it’s a pretty similargrin to the one he had when heused to drive his ‘66 Pontiac GTO.My dad and his brothers were incollege when the muscle era hitfull stride, and they all owned apiece of it (see right). I decided tojoin in and purchased my firstChevelle a couple years back. It isneedier than ten toddlers, but Ilove it anyway.

Our readers are in on the funtoo, and have sent in their auto-motive pride and joy to share withyou. The cars are listed on pages8-16 in this section. If you’re in-terested in getting a closer lookat the cool rides of the past, find alocal car show listed on page 17.

Cool Rides gives readers achance to show their muscle

Four-and-a-half years ofmeticulous crafting re-stored the last 1941

Hupmobile Skylark that wasever made. Owner Frank W.Hummel of Berthoud pouredhours of love and sweat intothe masterpiece, a hobby tri-umph that reflects his deeppassion and life work on auto-mobiles.

The Hupmoblie Skylark wasbuilt by Hupp and originallysold as a lower-end vehicle forbusiness men. Only 354 of thecars were made before Huppwent out of business. Thereare at least 26 remainingHupmobile Skylarks in theworld. Hummel’s brother pur-chased this particular car inthe early 1950s and drove ituntil 1963. It sat outdoors for10 years and then indoors forthe next 21 years. Hummelpurchased the car in 1994and started the restoration.

He bought a Camaro 350and used its engine to replacethe original engine of theHupmobile Skylark. Everypart of the Hupmobile was ex-amined and several parts wererepaired, repainted, replaced

or rebuilt.“At least 90-95 percent of

everything had to be takenout and cleaned,” Hummelsaid. “That is where the four-and-a-half years came from.”

Hummel restored and paint-ed springs. He built the motormount 30 some years ago andmodified it to put in an auto-matic transmission. He thenconverted the Camaro 350transmission to automaticand placed it in the Hupmo-bile Skylark.

He had the interior reuphol-stered and found an originalHupmobile seat in Connecti-cut with healthy springs. Healso repainted the lime greenwindow rims with a turquoisecolor. He took out the metaldashboard, converted it to aphoto frame for the garageand then replaced the car’sdashboard with a wood one.

For the Love of Pine in Love-land rebuilt a rotten woodframe that went around thetrunk. The roof was made ofseven pieces. He worked andreworked each section to crafta smooth finished car roof.

“It is probably in bettershape than the day it rolledout of the factory,” Hummel’sgrandson Ryan Dardano said.

At the age of 16, Hummel

bought his first car andlearned how to work on it. Hetaught himself mechanics andworked at a small garage inBerthoud before joining theNavy as a aircraft mechanic. After the war, he and hisbrother owned a large autoparts business in Denverwhere Hummel rebuilt severalcars. He also spent 20 yearsteaching welding in the Den-ver school district.

Hummel kept every receiptfrom the parts he purchasedfor the Hupmobile Skylark, in-cluding $445 spent on spraypaint alone. Hummel strippedall of the exterior paint off sothat his nephew could add thenew black finish.

When expressing the valueof the car, Hummel men-tioned that any person inter-ested in buying the car in thefuture would have to bring astack of $1,000 bills and laythem down one-by-one on thetable until Hummel said tostop.

“We don’t drive it thatmuch,” Hummel said. “Wetake it out 3-4 times a yearand pay $500 in insurance. Itfigures out to be $150-200dollars each time we take itout to have a little fun. Thethrill is worth it.”

A Cutting Edge-ucationAIMS program designed to give students apractical yet cutting edge curriculum

JADE CO DYSPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

Aims Automotive & TechnologyCenter Program Director FredB ro w n ’s mission is to stay ahead

of the curve, ensuring the future valueof his students’ education.

“I try to Gretzky my program,” hesaid, referencing a famous WayneGretzky quote: “Skate to where thepuck is going, not to where it is.”

What Brown means is that he istraining his students not only in to-day’s methods and techniques, but al-so for the automotive technology ofthe future. For example, his paint andbody students are taught to use bothwaterborne and solvent-borne paintingmethodology, as waterborne, while notwidely used today, will soon becomethe standard. Another example is thescience lab, which is set up to educatestudents with alternative fuels thatmay become more standard in the fu-ture.

The AIMS program currently hasabout 150 students who study in the45,000-square-foot facility whichopened earlier this year. While theAIMS automotive program is 40 yearsold, Brown has rebuilt the curriculumand the experience to a more evolvingmodel taking advantage of his state of RH photo/Jade Cody

Classic FaithJADE CO DYSPECIAL SECTIONS EDITOR

The Beckman family hasfound three commondenominators in their

lives — muscle cars, familyand faith. As high schoolsweethearts, Gary and There-sa spent weekend nightscruising Loveland in Gary’s‘69 Dodge Dart. Two boys andthree cars later, they are stillat it.

Gar y’s 1968 PlymouthRoadrunner is the centerpieceof the garage, and was rebuiltand painted by Gary. It’s pow-ered by a 440 engine super-charged by a Dick Landy B&Mblower producing 680 horse-power on pump gas. It runssub-12 second quarter miles.

“It’s a driver,” Gary said.“This car is made for enjoy-ment.”

The family takes it on shortdrives to Golden and aroundNorthern Colorado, thoughlong range trips are usuallycurbed by the Roadrunner’sfuel efficiency — at about 8 or9 miles to the gallon, Garysaid.

Theresa, on the other hand,is more into the modern clas-

sics, such as her 2001 Pontiac FirebirdWS6 with a six speed transmission. The WS6 is known for its powerful per-formance, though it is still able toachieve upper 20s in miles per gallon.

Staying within the family’s Mopartheme, seventeen-year-old Caleb has aPlymouth Duster powered by a SlantSix engine. It shows well in its MoparSublime green paint and is still beingfinished by the father and son.

“It’s still not done, it was in roughshape,” Gary said. “We worked togeth-er on it.”

The duo completed body work andpainted the car together. “This one’s agood one to learn on,” Gary said.

The Duster is becoming rare, hesaid, because a lot of them ended upbeing used as drag racing cars.

As members of Redeemer Lutheranchurch in Fort Collins, the Beckman’s

combined their faith with their auto-motive passion to start RedeemerRodders, a small group car club at thechurch. The group has about 15 mem-bers, and meets for car shows andcommunity outreaches such as provid-ing car repairs and oil changes tothose who can’t afford them.

Proceeds from their yearly car show(held on April 24 this year) go toyouth groups within the church, whouse the funds to go on missions tripsthroughout the year. Community sup-port has been monumental, Gary said, with several Loveland merchants do-nating items for the shows.

“I’m just a car guy that wants tocombine his faith with cars,” Gar ysaid.

For more information about Re-deemer Rodders or Redeemer Luther-an church, call 970-225-9020.

Mind those car show manners

MAT T H E W ZL AT E NSPECIAL TO THE RH

Car show season is here again. For all of the car show new-bies out there, here are a few

bits of etiquette on attending a cars h o w.

Car shows can be, and should be,a great time for everyone in thefamily, but it’s very important to becareful when entering the environ-ment for the first time. Car guysand gals are a fun bunch, but theycan be persnickety about what theybrought to share: their cars. Theseunique members of the human racehave invested a lot of time andmoney into their rides and are veryproud of them. Some of them don’tmind spending hours polishing onebolt that might only be seen fromunder the car, or tinkering to getan 80-year-old component to work, because a brand new one justwouldn’t be right.

The first rule of thumb is to lookbut don’t touch. A hard-core hotrodder can easily have $10,000 ormore invested in the paint job andbright-work (a fancy word for pol-ished metal and chrome). If some-one would accidentally scratch thatinvestment, it could cost the ownerseveral hundred dollars to repair.

When setting out for a car showadventure, be aware of a few things.Clothing can be an unforeseen dan-

ger to paint. Try to avoid wearinganything metal that could brush upagainst a car; necklaces and beltbuckles are the biggest culpritshere, but sunglasses on chords, but-tons and zippers can also be a prob-lem.

If children are coming along, make sure they understand not totouch the car. Introducing kids tohot rods is a great thing, but avoidat all costs introducing them to anirate hot rod owner.

Car shows can be accepting ofdogs, but it is a good idea to checkwith the show’s sponsoring groupbefore bringing four-legged friends.Make sure to keep all paws, clawsand collars away from the paint.

If you do find something on a carthat deserves a closer look, or aparticularly cool item that reallyjust has to be felt to be appreciated, make sure to check with the ownerfirst.

And finally, if you like the car and

the owner is sitting or standingnearby, say something. Car showsare ultimately about community. These owners love their cars. Com-plements to a rodder’s car are nextto compliments for their childrenon the ladder of what tickles anowner’s pride. If there is a question, most owners would be delighted toeducate the public on whatever ele-ment of the car piques curiosity.

The more information you gather, the greater the chance you willbuild your own hot rod someday. Some year soon you may be thequirky rod owner with the fuzzydice hanging in the windshield atthe car show answering questionsand guarding your paint job withyour life.

Matthew Zlaten lives in Longmontand has attended car shows for hisentire life with his dad. He dreamsabout building hot rods and hopes tofill his garage with a few of thems o m e d a y.

Taking care of a classic car re-quires an involved awareness.Richard David Crouse, owner

and manager of Custom Auto Incor-porated, builds and restores classiccars. Here is his advice for keepingup cars:

• Place the car in dry storage andout of the sunlight if possible. UVrays have a damaging effect on thepaint, rubber parts and upholstery.

• Check for leaks and the condi-tions of the tires before taking thecar out. Collector often weigh a lot, causing the tires to carry a heavyload.

•Check all fluids and gear cases.• Keep every part in good shape. It

can be hard to locate the parts need-ed, and Crouse is always on the look-out for gems. His shop also buildsand rebuilds needed parts for vin-tage cars and hot rods when theycan’t be found. “It is important tohave everything in good condition, especially on the brakes, steeringand suspension,” Crouse said.

• Make sure that the car is not outof alignment so that it won’t dam-

age itself.“If you drive it beyond its limits of

maintenance, it will damage thec a r, ” Crouse said.

EXTERIOR CARE

Owner of Wash Me Car washesFred Ginther offered advice for keep-ing up the exterior of a car:

• Be proactive from the start. Alot of older cars only went through aone step paint process so protectingthe paint is very important. There isan added protection of a clear coaton newer cars.

• Keep magnesium chloride off ofthe undercarriage. Road salt can al-so act as a corrosive product. Washweekly to keep the car as safe as pos-sible. Gravel can get dirt intocrevices underneath the car, causingmoisture build up and eventuallyrust the exterior.

• Wax every six months to makethe finish last longer. Wax will alsokeep the oils in the paint preserved.UV rays, tree saps and bugs can alldamage the finish.

• Wash at a professional car washbecause the wastes are handled cor-rectly. Washing in the driveway candump waste into waterways.
