Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension
In Rome today, Pope Francis declares that John Henry Newman, also known as Cardinal Newman, is a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church. This canonization marks the first time since the Reformation that a person from England who is not a martyr has been canonized.
Perhaps you have heard of Cardinal Newman because you have sung his hymns, “Lead, Kindly Light,” and “Praise to the Holiness.” Perhaps you recall as a high school or college student reading excerpts from his writings such as THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY or APOLOGIA POR VITA SUA. Newman is considered one of the great writers in the English language, and his work is studied in both classes of religion as well as English literature.
Perhaps you have heard of Newman because you enjoy listening to classical music, and you remember that the composer Elgar set Newman’s poem THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS to music, a piece renown for its beauty. Perhaps you attended a secular or non-Catholic college or university and attended activities for Catholics in the Newman Club or attended religious services in the Newman Center. Newman was chosen as the patron of the intellectual life, and Catholic students were reminded that one can be both religious and intellectual. I recall that when I was director of the Catholic Center at New York University I would ask young adults who weren’t part of NYU why they attended Mass at the Catholic Center chapel. The response almost always was that when they moved to a new city, they always sought out a University chapel because they knew that their faith would be enriched as well as challenged. Newman would be proud of that response.
John Henry Newman was born in London in l801, the oldest of 6 children. He was raised in the Church of England (Anglican) and influenced heavily by the writings of the Protestant reformer, John Calvin. He was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church in l824. Eventually, he was appointed rector of St. Mary’s University Chapel at Oxford, and many of his sermons from that famous pulpit are published still.
During his time at St. Mary’s, Newman’s studies in liturgical history, apostolic succession and the fathers of the church led him and a group of his followers to seek to restore to the Anglican Church much of the tradition that had been lost in the Protestant Reformation. The “Oxford Movement” which sought a “via media” between Catholicism and Protestantism came out of this study. While many remained Anglicans and began the practices of “high church,” Newman became a Roman Catholic in l845 and shortly after that was ordained a Catholic priest. He modelled his life on St. Philip Neri, founder of the Oratory, and Newman remained for much of the rest of his life at the Oratory in Birmingham, England. He did spend four years in Ireland, helping the Irish bishops erect what has become University College, Dublin. Because of his great theological works, he was named a cardinal by Pope Leo X111 in l879.
Newman’s belief in the consultation of the laity within the church and in the development of dogma had a great influence on the documents of the Second Vatican Council. While there was bitterness in England at his becoming a Catholic, he now is revered by the Anglican Church, and Prince Charles will represent the English monarchy at Newman’s canonization. Many pray that Newman’s intercession may be a source of greater union between the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Church.
Newman’s motto is “heart speaks to heart.” May the heart of this great man continue to speak to us throughout the years.

The parish is aware that several people have the ashes of their beloved dead because they were not able to afford bur-ial at the time of death. Father Kearney has arranged for free burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, Westchester County. On Saturday morning, November 9, there will be a special Mass at 9:00 AM, with the ashes pre-sent, followed by the burial. If you have ashes at home and would like to have them interred/buried on that day, please speak with Father Kearney or Sareda as soon as possi-ble. Get in contact with him with any questions or clarifica-tions.
