StuCo Convention>>>By: Macie Lemmons

ACT…By: Zachary Lohn

On April 6-8, Community High School’s Student Council went to Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tennessee for TASC state convention. This years theme was Star Wars and was called “Leadership Awakens”. Students learned about leadership and how to grow as an individual. On Saturday, all of the students went to Dollywood. Even though it was raining and cold, everyone had a fun time. Gracie Miles passed on her baton of Middle Tennessee Representative to the next person and concluded her year as an officer. Ms. Williams said, “As I looked out in the auditorium full of 700 students, I realized that they were our future leaders, and I was okay with that.” Overall, everyone had an amazing time, and we all look forward to returning to convention next year.

On March 20, 2018, Juniors from Community High School took the national ACT Test. This test is given at the school every year free for the students. The ACT test score is what colleges use to gage how ready a student is for college. The Sophomores took the practice ACT for the second time this tear. This test is also free for the students. The goal for the practice ACT tests is that the students will become comfortable in the atmosphere and used to how the test is organized. The Freshmen took classes that day on how to effectively take the ACT test. This was the first year

that the Freshmen stayed on campus to learn about strategies to take the ACT. Some students say that this was one of the hardest ACT tests that they have taken. The Juniors will be receiving their scores soon. Good luck to those who took the test!

Goodbye, Hot Lunch>>>By: Grayson Garrette

Fun Facts…By: Jireh Von Dran

● Did you know, Easter gets its name from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess who symbolizes the hare and the egg.

● During Easter, more than 90 million chocolate bunnies, 91.4 billion eggs, and 700 million Peeps are produced in the United States alone.

Starting this May, the Community

High School cafeteria will no longer be

serving a hot meal to go along with grab

n’ go. Unfortunately, the recent increase

in the number of students at Community

has put too much strain on the cafeteria

staff, and they are having to make some

critical cutbacks. While the general

population of students may initially be

upset at the new decision, the staff and

administration think it will be beneficial

to the student body as a whole.

“We think this reduction will give

students a chance to start bringing their

own lunch again,” states Dr. Keith

Williams. “We’ll have to make the best

we can out of peanut butter and jelly

sandwiches, cheetos, and the

government cheese.”

The cafeteria staff is recommending

that people soak up the hot food while

they can because April 30 will be the

last day for students to ever enjoy a

warm meal at school again. With any

luck, the tide will turn and the

administration will reverse its decision,

but for now students can say goodbye to

hot lunch.

A sign outside the high

school cafeteria displays the

sad news about the

cutbacks on lunch.

April Fools!!!

Titanic>>>By: Jewel Hewitt

Quotes…By: Macie Lemmons

On April 15th, 1912 a cruiseliner otherwise known as the Titanic sunk, taking the lives of over 1,503 people. On the ship’s main voyage, it collided with a drifting iceberg that completely tore the haul of the ship to shreds. This is the story that was told to anyone who listened, but no one ever explained why this tragedy occured. The ship’s downfall can only be blamed on its arrogant captain who decided to reverse the ship’s engine instead of turning the ship in full forward motion. Because of his mistake, the ship was unable to turn out of the iceberg’s path, sealing its fate.

Disney Half Marathon…By: Jireh Von Dran

Disney… The place where dreams come true. Well, my dream just so happened to be to run a half marathon in the land of magic. Walt Disney World actually has multiple themed races throughout the year. I chose the Stars Wars Dark Side Half Marathon but there was a Disney Princess run not too long ago. Now, 13.1 miles is a lot, and I wouldn’t be able to complete it without some crazy training. When I was really into running, I would train three or four times a week but now that I’m also juggling competitive swimming,

Dear Students of Community,

As the year begins to wind down, so does much of the stress (at least for most of us). Seniors, I know this time of the school year is the most stressful with graduation around the corner and college just up the road. I hope that you all find the path that you are wanting to take and chase your dreams. If you are having deep-rooted issues that you are wanting to get off your chest, please, feel free to send them in. I will be delighted to help you!

For all of you underclassmen, especially Freshmen, send in your concerns! I know the first and third year of high school are two of the hardest years of your career, so please let me know how you feel! All of you guys are valuable to me and I love helping all of you! Thank you for everything and I hope to speak to all of you soon!

-Your friend, Campbell

I usually run about once a week. The race takes place on Sunday, April 22nd at 5:30 in the morning… The course starts in the Epcot parking lot and goes through each park throughout the race, finally ending back in Epcot. Since the race isn’t until Sunday morning, I actually get to visit my favorite parks beforehand. The best part about this though, is that I get to enjoy lots of Mickey Mouse shaped food!!!!

Key Club Egg Hunt…By: Brayden Pearson

On March 21st, 2018, the Community High School Key Club hosted their annual easter egg hunt. The egg hunt lasted from 3:30-5:30. The event consisted of the traditional egg hunt, prizes, snacks, a biblical story, fun games, and much more. The egg hunt was available for any child or baby up to 10 years of age. The children and parents were greeted with snacks before the hunt. Later on, the children were divided by age and were sent to hunt in various different classrooms. After the hunt, Logan Brothers presented the story of Easter, and then students were able to collect prizes.

A happy child finding one of many eggs!

Wow. The end is here, and everything is moving like the movie title, Fast and Furious. It is during this time that we are called to stay focused. With the emphasis on testing and demands of classes, the end of the year can become overwhelming if we let it. I challenge you to stay on top of tasks and keep work up to date. We will soon be seeing the fruits of the hard work at Awards Day, Honors Day, and the big finale, Graduation. Strive to be the best you can in all you do to help to make Community High School, the Best School……..Period!

March Madness (Again)>>>By: Zachary Lohn

First of all, I would like to say that the Viking Voice is not responsible for any broken brackets for those who followed my advice. I am only a Junior in high school. Secondly, WHAT A TOURNAMENT! History was made, celebrities were born, and there was the cinderella team that stole America's heart. The Round of 64 was memorable. First of all, who is UMBC? This question was asked many times throughout the night of March 16th because by defeating Virginia, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County made history becoming the first 16 seed to ever defeat a 1 seed! Not only were they a number one seed, but they were the overall number one seed! The score was tied at half 21-21, but the Retrievers outscored the Cavaliers 53-33 in the second half wrapping up the historic moment. The Retrievers were put out in the second round, but their few games will be remembered forever. Loyola-Chicago and Sister Jean were the next unlikely story. The Ramblers were a veteran team who always seemed to make the big shot. It all started in the Round of 64 when Donte Ingram pulled up from the logo down by one, and then it happened, the shot dropped through the net as time expired! The dream lives on! The Ramblers not only had that shot, but they also pulled a miracle in the second round, too. The Ramblers had just given up the lead after being in front by 10. After Tennessee’s Grant Williams hit the free throw to put

them up by 1, arguably the best player on Loyola stepped up. Clayton Custer dribbled to the right wing, and he pulled up with the Tennessee defender in his face. The ball was in the air forever as the it hit the front of the rim, and then took three or four more bounces before falling. Tennessee’s Jordan Bone missed a shot off of the back of the rim as time expired to end the Volunteers’ season. The Ramblers moved on to play Nevada in the Sweet Sixteen, and of course they had the ball, but this time they were up by one with time running out. Custer dribbled into the teeth of the defense before kicking the ball out to a wide open Marques Townes who knocked down the dagger three to end Nevada’s hopes. Loyola-Chicago ended up making its way to the Final Four with a convincing win over Kansas State. The Ramblers season ended versus Michigan as the Wolverines just could not be stopped that night. On the other side, Kansas and Duke played for their chance for their trip to the Final Four with the winner playing Villanova. Duke’s Grayson Allen had a shot at the buzzer but it rolled out. Kansas went on to win the game setting up a huge showdown between Villanova and Kansas. It was going to be a great game... until it was not. Villanova could not miss that night as they continued dancing into the Championship game against Michigan. Villanova was clearly the better team as they dominated throughout the game and the tournament.

Donte Ingram pulls up to beat the clock versus

Miami.

Villanova hoists the championship

trophy after a well deserved win!

Think Fast...By: Jireh Von Dran

On March 11th, FBLA made their way to a state competition. It lasted four days and within those days, students would sit through and listen to speakers and students presently enrolled in high school. These members would also be competing individually to add to the group’s school score. Freshmen Rose Tomlin and Kyla Mooneyham would be competing in the Introduction to Public Speaking category. Sophomore Mackenzie Blanton in the Computer Applications section. Sophomores Will Vaughn, Isaiah Sons, and Hunter Norman in the Business Plan section. The rankings were based on overall presentation and Community High School placed sixth. Congratulations to them as they represented CHS wonderfully!

The competitors enjoy their ice cream!

The Think Fast program is an interactive game show where students learn the dangers of texting and drinking while driving. Students were split up into teams of 4-6, and then the team captains were given this remote device to log in answers. The idea of the game was to get the most correct answers the fastest. The overall subject, however, was as previously mentioned, about drinking/texting and driving. Throughout the game, students were giving the brutal, yet honest, statistics about the those two subjects and told to pay attention and memorize them for later use. There was a dance competition in which Peyton Davis won along with an acting competition that Alyssa Amos won. Both participants won Amazon gift cards and a spot on the final four. During the final four showdown, the students went head-to-head and Alyssa Amos once again came out victorious, winning her team $100 in Amazon gift cards. In the end, the program was both fun, and informative.

Community High School’s representatives sit and wait for a presentation.

Spring Break Adventures…By: Kera Reynolds

Everyone needs a time to relax from school sometimes. Whether you are going on a vacation or you are laying on the couch watching television all day, spring break should be a time to unwind from all the stress from school work. Many students and teachers did some exciting and interesting activities over the break. Junior Logan Brothers, states that she went to the Predators game, and she also celebrated her 18th birthday. English IV teacher, Miss. Williams, traveled to Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Vancouver; Canada.

Extra! Extra! Community High School’s Leadership Bedford Class went to the state capital on March 14, 2018 to not only meet the state legislation but also the governor! The Leadership Class of 2017-2018 is the largest class Community has had in the last decade! This year’s class has a total of thirty youth, nine of which are from Community. Our own Mrs. Garrette is in this year’s class as well! On this day, both the youth and the adult classes had to be up bright and early this day to get to Nashville to begin their tour. While on the tour, a hot breakfast was served by the governor himself, with lunch bought by the sponsors of the program. After breakfast, the class started with a tour of the Tennessee State Museum, getting some downtime to spend with their friends. The day was filled with fun and adventure, each class member making memories that will last a lifetime!

Cherry Blossom…By: Jireh Von Dran

What is a better way to celebrate the beginning of spring than with the cherry blossoms, gifted to us from Japan in 1912? The Cherry Blossom Festival is famously celebrated in Washington, but many other places like Nashville celebrate the tradition as well. In Washington, their are an array of fun activities such as, the Blossom Kite festival, Japanese Street festival, Southwest Waterfront Fireworks, and more. This is definitely not a festival to miss!

YOUTUBE SHOOTEROn April 3rd, Nasim Najafi Aghdam, angry and upset with video-sharing platform YouTube, made her way to its headquarters in California. Her anger led her to wound three people and then turn the gun on herself. Her grudge formed from YouTube age restricting her videos, which resulted in it taking away views and revenue.

Earth Day vs. Arbor Day…By: Maria Rodriguez

Kera’s Kollum>>>By: Kera Reynolds

Earth Day- Earth day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin on April 22, 1970.

- It was practiced in the United States first with an estimated 20 million people taking part in festivities to celebrate and nurture “Mother Earth.”

- It is now something celebrated world-wide.

Arbor Day- J. Sterling Morton, the vice-president of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, founded Arbor Day shortly after moving to a treeless Nebraska on April 10, 1872.

- Arbor Day focuses on reforestation and conservation of nature, just on a smaller scale than that of Earth Day.
