Youth Outreach ProgramLearn to Sail & Boating Safety Courses forSchool & Youth Groups

For more than 20 years The School of Sailing & Sea-manship has o ered “Safe Boating” and “Learn to Sail” courses to youth in the Orange County area. The pro-gram o ers a unique opportunity for students to expe-rience our local waterways. In recent years our Sailing & Science camp has joined our traditional Learn to Sail Camp and Safe Powerboat Handling Camp

The program is FREE to programs serving at-risk” youth thanks to a grant from California State Parks - Division of Boating and Waterways.

Our Summer Sailing Camps are an ideal place for kids and teens to explore sailing for the first time. The goal of the Learn to Sail Program is to build confidence and self-esteem through the sport of sailing. Sailing re-quires agility, skill, teamwork and concentration and with games, races and other activities individual, and team working skills are enhanced.

Campers in the Powerboat Camp will learn how to safely operate small boats powered by outboard engines. This 16-hours course allows time for both hands-on instruction and theory to build seamanship knowledge and practical boat handling skills. Students will have the option take the test required to obtain a California Boater Card.

In the Sailing and Science Camp students will learn to sail while exploring the forces at work in and around the boat in a camp filled with hands-on learning and fun activities from boat building to navigation, environmen-tal stewardship and sailing adventures. Sailing o ers a myriad of opportunities to balance learning and fun in a dynamic way with campers building confidence and self-esteem while having fun enjoying the outdoors.

Operating a boat requires knowledge, skill, teamwork, concentration and a sense of responsibility. The Youth Outreach Program, taught by OCC’s certified sailing and powerboat instructors, builds essential skills, confidence and self-esteem while students are having fun and enjoy-ing the outdoors.

Over the years’ participants have come from groups such as Families First, American Family Housing, Phoenix House, KidWorks, SOY, Joplin Youth Center, Back Bay High School and Ensign Middle School.

The program runs year round and is available to all School and Youth groups as A er School Sailing classes, school day PE classes or summer camps. Give us a call or visit our website for more information.
