off video of the first rides with nodriver at the wheel in the WaymoPhoenix Early Rider Program. Krafcikalso announced the program will berolling out to other cities soon,including those in the Bay Area, andpredicted that by 2028, all weatherself-driving vehicles, that is the mostadvanced level of autonomy, Level 5,will be available widespread globally.
With autonomous vehicles and smartcities having a significant presenceat CES this year, Shapiro, reflected oncurrent autonomous activity andtimelines.
“Most areas now the driver must beable to take over. In ideal driving
conditions on highways, it’s the easything to do without weather andsnow issues, but as you get to morecomplex city environments whenyou get to snow and ice and thingslike that, there’s still some hurdles.Google had to stop their experimentswhere they had their own employeesbehind the wheel because they foundwhile they were supposed to bepaying attention some of them werefalling asleep, playing games. very difficult to stay focused. Ialways wonder how pilots do it whenthey’re in the air. The fact is if you’renot moving around and doing stuffit’s very easy to get totally distracted,but the fact is the technology ismoving very,very quickly. Your momwill not be in a self-driving car whereshe does not have to takeover nextyear, I guarantee that but in the next5 or 6 years she’ll probably have theoption to buy one.”
Shapiro also noted cominglegislation that might serve as anobstacle for autonomous commercial
vehicles in the U.S., “There’slegislation that the House passed,that the Senate is considering, thatsays the states can do all thesethings except they exemptedcommercial vehicles and trucksbecause the Democrats in the Unionsaid you know we want to save thesejobs.”
When asked about displacement,Shapiro said:

electricity radio television, thecomputer, the internet itself, hasdisplaced people from jobs but hasalways always created new jobs. Andwe will have new jobs here. Today wehave a phenomenal job shortage. Wehave a job shortage of truckers, butwe also have an aging populationand we are cutting back on ourunskilled immigration flow andfrankly we have a lower birthrate,which means there’s not people totake care of older people and we’reliving longer. so we need people inother jobs we need to train people,we also need people to do things andfix things, and we need to changeour culture so that it’s not everybodyhas to get a four year degree oryour’e a failure in this country, wehave to follow Germany that doesapprenticeship and treats technicalpeople with equal respect to thosewho get college degrees.”
