What is Sustainability? There exist over 300 definitions for sustainability.

The best-known definition of sustainability or sustainable development is the definition by  the World Commission on Environment and Development. This suggests that sustainability is defined as "forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."

What is an indicator of sustainability? An indicator is something that helps you understand where you are, which way you are going and how far you are from where you want to be.

A good indicator alerts you to a problem before it gets too bad and helps you recognize what needs to be done to fix the problem. Indicators of a sustainable community point to areas where the links between the economy, environment and society are weak.

They allow you to see where the problem areas are and help show the way to fix those problems.

Characteristics

The purpose of an indicator is to show you how well a system is working. If there is a problem, an indicator can help you determine what direction to take to address the issue. Indicators are as varied as the types of systems they monitor. However, there are certain characteristics that effective indicators have in common:

•Effective indicators are relevant; they show you something about the system that you need to know. •Effective indicators are easy to understand, even by people who are not experts. •Effective indicators are reliable; you can trust the information that the indicator is providing. •Effective indicators are based on accessible data; the information is available or can be gathered while there is still time to act.

Gaia Group (Gaia Architects, Gaia Planning and Gaia Research) are presently developing a Model for Sustainable Development. The aim of the model is to:

•assist regeneration of communities•assist communities to become intelligent clients, participating in and taking ownership of the process of safe, healthy and sustainable community development, through defining and auditing indicators.•demonstrate practical applications to community clients, designers, developers and others.

Sustainable agriculture integrates three main goals: environmental stewardship, farm profitability, and prosperous farming communitiesSustainable agriculture refers to the ability of a farm to produce food indefinitely, without causing irreversible damage to ecosystem health.

Sustainable architecture applies techniques of sustainable design to architecture. Some examples of sustainable building materials include recycled denim or blown-in fiber glass insulation, sustainably harvested wood, bamboo, which is one of the strongest and fastest growing woody plants, and non-toxic low-VOC glues and paints.

Sustainable forestry is a forest management practice. The basic tenet of sustainable forestry is that the amount of goods and services yielded from a forest should be at a level the forest is capable of producing without degradation of the soil, watershed features or seed source for the future.Sustainable forestry includes, clean water, wildlife, recreation natural cover and forest where seed trees are left for natural regeneration.

Problems of sustainability of water supply in tourist resorts are becoming an increasingly common and important issue in applied geography and environmental management. This paper examines the relationships between tourism and water supply on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.

Since Mallorca lies in an area likely to be seriously affected by future climate change, its potential effects are discussed and evaluated.

There can be a particularly fragile balance between water supply and demand in small island communities (such as Mallorca) which have developed a reliance on tourism. Over-abstraction has caused an increase in salinity of groundwater resources and has exacerbated a general shortage of fresh water. The island also has important ecological reserves, but such habitats and species are threatened by the development of tourism and intensive agriculture.
