Information on the Majorca Supply System

The Majorca system was commissioned in 1948. The reason or justifcation or this

system was the necessity o a second system to supply the higher elevations o the

capital Kingstown and to supplement the epanding lower areas! together with the

districts in the south east o "t. #incent. $ newer inta%e was later constructed at &ohn 'ill during 19() to urther supplement the Majorca "ystem.

$s it regards to si*e! the +ow rate o the Majorca ,iver as measured downstream in

-ollins is on average .)98 Million imperial gallons per day.

/n the ollowing ta0le inormation on the villages and the uantities o water

supplied to them are presented2

,ainall patterns a6ect the Majorca "ystem as it does to any other o our surace

inta%e systems. /n periods o prolonged rainall there is a corresponding increase in

tur0idity levels that is eperienced. This is associated with the increase in sediment

load o the river due mainly to erosion 0y surace run o6. $ccording to the 7orld

'ealth rganisation! 7'! tur0idity levels should not eceed :T; 0ut should

ideally remain 0elow 1 :T;. /t 0ecomes a challenge to maintain these levels at our

surace inta%es and thereore the Majorca inta%e is euipped with a tur0idity sensorthat is used to control the inta%e valve. 7hen the tur0idity level o the stream

reaches a prescri0ed limit the valve closes and raw water is no longer introduced

into the system.

/n periods o prolonged dry spell and lac% o rainall! as in the dry season o 3))9 <

water. Thereore! the -7"$ has to put in motion a series o measures to ensure a

$s is common in all supply and distri0ution systems there is a certain percentage o

un accounted or water. This is due to various actors including lea%ages! especially

in older systems as the integrity o pipelines 0ecomes adversely a6ected over time

and the general wastage o water. The wastage o water is predominant in

government 0uildings2 "chools! 'ospitals! clinics and >u0lic 5aths and "tand pipes.

n the Majorca "ystem the total percentage o unaccounted or water is 4? which

is the 'ighest o our 11 water supply systems on mainland "t #incent. The overall

average on all our systems is 1?.
