Welcome from the
Superintendent It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to Encore’s presenta on of Into the Woods. The students who will entertain us today, and those work-ing behind the scenes, are a tremendous source of pride within our school community. For the past several months, they, guided by talented advisors and dedicated boosters, have spent countless hours preparing for today’s performance which will soon take us on a magical journey through an en-chanted forest filled with witches, wolves and fairy tale characters. Like Jack’s beanstalk, their hard work has bore fruit, resul ng in another high-quality and highly-entertaining show. This weekend’s performances allow the Southern Columbia Area School Dis-trict to showcase its talented students; they also serve as evidence that the arts are alive and flourishing within our schools. Numerous studies have demonstrated a correla on between involvement in the arts and academic achievement. In addi on to having higher standardized test scores than their peers who do not experience the arts, students who par cipate in dra-ma and music o en experience improved reading comprehension, maintain be er a endance records, and stay generally more engaged in school than their non-arts counterparts. The District recognizes and appreciates the val-ue of music educa on, drama, and the arts, and understands the im-portance of maintaining these rich learning experiences. In closing, I wish to express my apprecia on to the ad sponsors and commu-nity members who donated materials, built props and/or who helped in any other way. Your support and commitment to SCA’s Encore program goes a long way in providing our students with avenues to develop their crea ve talents. To Mrs. Stone, Music Department staff, the cast and crew of Into the Woods, and staff and parent volunteers- congratula ons for a job well done! I look forward to joining you in the audience and enjoying the adventures Cinderella, Li le Red Riding Hood, Jack, a baker and his wife, and other tal-ented Encore performers find when they take a journey Into the Woods. Enjoy the show!

Director’s Notes
“INTO THE WOODS”
Welcome once again to the 8th Season of Southern Columbia Area
Music Department’s performance of “Into the Woods.” I have been
waiting for the right group of talented students to do this very
difficult musical. We have so many talented students here at SCA.
“Into the Woods” seemed to be the perfect fit for this years’ cast.
“Into the Woods” is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen
Sondheim and book by James Laping. The musical intertwines the
plots of several Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and follows them to
explore the consequences of the character’s wishes and quests as
they venture “Into the Woods.” Join “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack
and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” and “Cinderella” as they find out
what they wish for is not what they really want. The musical is tied
together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife
and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a Witch who
has placed a curse on them, and the interaction with other storybook
characters happen as they journey through the woods.
“Into the Woods” is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen
Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the
Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway on
November 5, 1987. Bernadette Peters' performance as the Witch and
Joanna Gleason's portrayal of the Baker's Wife brought acclaim to the
production during its original Broadway run. “Into the Woods” won
several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best
Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The
Phantom of the Opera.
The musical has been produced many times, with a 1988 US
national tour, a 1990 West End production, a 1991 television
production, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2002 Broadway
revival, a 2010 London revival and in 2012 as part of New York City's
4
outdoor Shakespeare in the Park series. On December 25, 2014
another production of “Into the Woods” will be viewed by many in
movie theatres across the world. Johnny Depp portrays the “Wolf”
and Meryl Streep as the “Witch”.
This year we tried to add additional characters into our
production of “Into the Woods.” The students read many books
about many fairy tale characters, wrote a brief script, helped with
the design of their scenery, and will be interacting with audience
members in the High School Auditorium Lobby: The Three Bears,
Three Little Pigs, Three Blind Mice, The Piped Piper, Hansel &
Gretel, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. These students will also
be part of the ensemble (company) and dancers.
It amazes me each year as we go into another season of
Encore, how many talented students we have at Southern Columbia
School District. Some of these students you will see on stage
performing, some are the students behind the scenes running tech
and the stage. Everything we do to put this musical production
together utilizes skills that not only they have learned in chorus but
also math, physics, English, language, science, tech ed, FCS, and
theatre. They sew, build, design, read, memorize, sing, act, do make
-up and hair design, costume design, and write script. This is what
makes our productions so unique.
We are very thankful for the alumni, Encore parents,
students, family, and friends who have given many hours of their
time to help make this production possible. Thank you to the many
wonderful people throughout the Southern Columbia Community,
the Music Department, and all the people who have donated many
items for us to use in our production. To my colleagues, Jenn Bates
from Central Columbia HS and Tim Latsha from Bloomsburg HS, for
coming to our rescue and loaning us sound equipment, costumes,
and advice. You are truly angels.
We are also so appreciative to the administration, faculty, and
staff who have helped us during this 3 month process of going “Into
5
the Woods.” Thank you, thank you, thank you!
“Into the Woods” may be many fractured fairy rales but they
are tales that can teach us many things about life. Many times we wish for many things, but as you will learn in our production – Sometimes the things you wish for….you find that what you wished for isn’t really what you want or need: kindness, love, appreciation, devotion, and friendship. Please sit back and enjoy our production of
“Into the Woods”
Thank you, Letha Stone and the Cast & Crew of

Synopsis
An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Li le Red Ridinghood? A
Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch ... who raps? They're all
among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sond-
heim's fractured fairy tale.
When a baker and his wife learn they've been cursed with child-
lessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the spe-
cial objects ( a cow as white as milk ... a cape as red as blood ... hair as
yellow as corn ... a slipper as pure as gold ... ) required to break the
spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella (with the slipper
as pure as gold), Li le Red Ridinghood (with a cape as red as blood),
Rapunzel (with the hair as yellow as corn), and Jack (the one who
climbed the beanstalk - with the cow as white as milk). Everyone's
wish is granted at the end of Act One but the consequences of their
ac ons return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. A Giant (A
female Giant, that is) steps down from the heavens and straight upon
some beloved characters. It takes a few lives before the survivors real-
ize that they have to act altogether in order to succeed. Thus, what
begins a lively irreverent fantasy becomes a moving lesson about com-
munity responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
"This story is a magical, imagina ve adventure with a moral
and poli cal point of view. Employing sophis cated ar stry and inno-
va ve cra , the show's creators leads the audience on a journey to
the darker side of fairy tales as they explore the pain of growing up,
communal responsibility, and the values we pass on to our children.
As the intricate, absorbing plot unfolds, a childless baker and his wife,
cursed by a wicked witch, go off into the woods in hopes of ridding
themselves of her evil influence. There they encounter Cinderella, her
Prince Charming, Li le Red Ridinghood, the Wolf, Jack the Giant Killer,
Rapunzel, and other characters who are a emp ng to realize wishes
of their own. Filled with unexpected twists and dazzling insights, "Into
7
the Woods" is a cau onary plea for commitment expressed through
masterstrokes of theatrical magic. Subjects as diverse as the promise
of perfect love, the foolhardiness of ques ng for material goods, and
the loving but difficult rela onship between parents and children are
considered in a landscape shaded with psychological undertones."
"With tenderness and laughter, Sondheim and Lapine bring us
through a maze that mirrors the complexity of everyday existence. Like
the characters in “Into the Woods," we end this journey award of the
moral consequences of our ac ons and the power of tolerance, com-
munity, and shared sacrifice.
You will be surprised who you will meet as you go ....
"INTO THE WOODS"'!
ENJOY!

Michael's message to Mrs. Stone "Mrs. Stone, even though I have not had the full high school experience with chorus and Encore, the me I did have will influence me greatly for the rest of my life. Thank you for the memories!" Brenna Gessner Brenna has been in Encore for the past 4 years. She was in “Seussical,” “Cinderella” “Godspell,” and now this year she is a stepsister (Lucinda) in “Into the Woods.” Brenna would like to thank Mrs. Stone for all that she has done for her during all her years in the music department. Next year Brenna plans on a ending Alvernia University for occupa onal therapy and also plans to be in the choir because of all of the wonderful and upli ing experiences that she has had here. Brenna would like to wish the best of luck to Mrs. Stone and all of the future students in the musicals. Reba Broadfield This is Reba's third year in the pit orchestra in Encore. Her sophomore year, Reba played the oboe in Cinderella and the following year she did percussion in “Godspell.” This year she is playing oboe.
