This is a user guide and catalog for all of my favorite apps on

iTunes. Some of you may ask who is this Veronica Starovoit, and

what gives her the right to judge apps? Im just a geek and a

writer with an affection for apple products. Just ask my iPod touch

Lil Randy, iPad Big Randy, Macbook Pro Smart Randy and

my soon-to-be added iPhone 5 Perfect Randy, which will hopeful-

ly be unveiled later this year. Oh, and heres a picture of the Randy

who started it all (he wasnt invented by Apple, but I still think hes

neat):

This is a catalog and manual of apps that I consider extraordinary.

For various reasons outlined below and in the pages of this book,

these apps have been chosen to represent all apps. Think of them

as champions of the people: or superheroes, if you will. If youre

a new user to apps, this is a guide to whats special and good on

iTunes. If youre an experienced user confused about what to pick

among all the thousands of apps have no fear, this guide is here!

The apps in this book are organized by their superhero special

traits. Heres in explanation of what they all mean:

Powergrid: These are a rating system measuring things like

intelligence, power, longevity, or usefulness, depending on the

category of app displayed. These ratings are based on my

personal opinion after using the apps.

Creator: The company that made the app.

Sidekicks: The free, lite, or other version of an app.

Allies: The compatible devices and version of iOS (the Appleoperating system) needed to use the apps.

Superpowers: What makes these apps unique and special? This

explains the powers and abilities of the apps.

Weaknesses: Every hero has a weakness. This section outlines

what makes the app imperfect.

Information on Cosmetics (CCIS), lets you know

which cosmetic, personal care, and personal product

companies are completely free from animal testing.

Weaknesses: Only lists companies that are

100% cruelty free. While this may not seem like a

limitation, it is because it ignores product lines like

Clairols Herbal Essences and CoverGirls NatureLuxe,which are also cruelty free in their own way.

wonder how to spot a cruelty free product. In threesimple steps, heres how you spot a company that

doesnt test on animals

1. Click the Cruelty-Free app on your iOS device. An

alphabetical list of companies that do not test on

animals is displayed.

2. Click the Products tab at the bottom to display

the products view.

3. Select a category for the item you are shoppingfor (bleach, cosmetics, insect repellent, etc) and a

shorter list of companies that manufacture cruelty

free products in that category is displayed.

and learn about the sky. This app analyzes and cal-

culates the position in the sky your device is pointed

at and displays information on constellations, stars,

planets, and galaxies in your view. You can also get it

a planet or your star sign.

Weaknesses: GPS takes a while to update whenthe newest iOS comes out. It also requires an Internet

connection to work, so users with iPod touchs beware!

Superhero Task: To use Star Chart on the nights sky

1. Click the Star Chart app on your iOS device. If

of some constellations appears. If this is not your

rsttime,theviewfromyourprevioussession

2. Click the Augmented Reality button at the bottom

of the app. This turns the screen into a realtime

view of what your iOS device is pointed at.

3. Face the back of your iOS device to a position inthe night sky that interests you.

4. Read the screen to learn about what youre

looking at, whether it be a constellation, star,

planet, galaxy, or other interplanetary body.

about famous art or artists, Art is a handy app to

have around. You can browse through the worldsmost famous artists and sculptors, view their artwork

bios. If you think you know the art youve studied well

enough, you can quiz yourself and try to guess who

created which piece of art. Art also provides bonuses

like links to additional information, a free subscrip-

tion to an art newsletter, and a rundown of the most

expensive artwork ever created.

Weaknesses: While this may seem like a strength,

there are so many artists and artwork in this app

(204 and growing), the quiz component is intimidating

for both novice and advanced users.

reminders and alerts, but it is ultimately up to you to

Superhero Task: Lose It! makes it easy to lose or

maintain weight by setting goals and keeping track ofdaily diet activities. Log your diet with Lose It! on any

given day like this:

1. Click the Lose It! app on your iOS device. If you

have set up your goals, skip to step 5.

2. Set your weight goals by clicking the Goals icon

at the bottom of the screen and then click Modify

Program.

3. Fill out your starting, current, and goal weight,yourgender,height,andage,andnallyyour

weekly plan for losing or maintaining weight.

4. Click the Goals button at the top left corner and

then the My Day icon at the bottom of the screen.

5. Click Add Food or Add Exercise to browse

through and select your food and exercise activi-

ties for the day.

6. Click Cancelornishingloggingactivitiestogo

back to the My Day screen, where your dailycalorie status will have updated.

Superhero Task: To create a new song using DJ

Mixer Pro

1. Click on the DJ Mixer Pro app on your iOS

device. You are shown two turntables right away,

with preloaded songs if you have used the app

before.

2. Click the music note on the bottom left corner of

either turntable.

3. Select a song from your iTunes library you would

like to mix. Repeat steps 1-3 if you would like tomix another song on the second turntable with

yourrstsong.

4. Click the play button on one or both of your

songs.

5. Turn the turntable, add effects using the Effects

tab, and record your song when ready.
