Opening Prayer

We are gathered here today, Lord God as your people to offer you our sacrifice of prayer and worship. We come from different walks of life; some are well educated, others not; some have walked with you for many years, others are just starting their journey; some are strong, others weak; some are full of joy, others burdened by care. You love each of us in equal measure. You pour your blessings on us in equal measure. May each meet you in a special way today. Amen.

Introit

Hymn 707

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures big and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.

The bright and sunny weather, our sparkling waters pureare gifts from God as well as the white sand on our shore.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures big and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.

The mangoes in the summer, the sea grapes growing wild, guinep and plums and guavas are gifts for every child.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures big and small, all things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all.

The waters round our islands are brimming full with food;

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

The Lord be with you.

ALL:And also with you.

Let us pray.

The Collects

Ash Wednesday (page 163)Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever

ALL: Amen.

Fourth Sunday in Lent: (page 164)Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Harvest ThanksgivingO God, you have made us co-creators of our destiny; we give thanks for productivity and for advances in many fields: in agriculture, in industry and commerce, and in science and technology. Keep us ever mindful of your power and your love, the origin of all that is, the source of strength and wisdom, harmony and wealth. All things come from you, O God. We give you of your own, with praise and thanksgiving, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

ALL: Amen.

First Reading Joel 2:21-27 Do not fear, O soil; be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done great things! Do not fear, you animals of the field, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; the tree bears its fruit, the fig tree and vine give their full yield. O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the LORD your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the

hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the LORD, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame.

Psalm 63:1-8 (BOCP)

1 O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; * my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a barren and dry land where there is no water.

2 Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, * that I might behold your power and your glory.

3 For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; * my lips shall give you praise.

4 So will I bless you as long as I live * and lift up my hands in your Name.

5 My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, * and my mouth praises you with joyful lips,

6 When I remember you upon my bed, * and meditate on you in the night watches.

7 For you have been my helper, * and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.

8 My soul clings to you; * your right hand holds me fast.

Psalm 63:1-9 (Parish Psalter)

Second ReadingPhilippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing,

whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Hymn 716

Once more, O Lord, we come to thee, to offer thanks and praise -the harvest time has come again- our grateful songs we raise. Some fruits we bring have come from near, some gifts from distant lands-bananas, sugar, citrus, pears, all offering from our hands.

We thank you, Lord, for sea and sand, which help our tourist trade -for sunshine warm and summer rain on isles where pirates preyed. In songs we chant our gratitude; for loved ones dear to us,health, family, friends and multitudes of gifts that earn our trust.

Today in our Caribbean land once more we bring our praise -thanks-giving time has come again: our voices we shall raise.Another year has come and gone; we have been blessed once more -the offering, which your people bring, flow, from your boundless store.

GospelMatthew 6:25-33 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in

all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son

Hymn 714

In this our bounteous island* God smiles his sweetest smile;from ferny dell and covert wild flowers our eyes beguile;among the leafy branches the ripened mangoes sway, and green pimento berries make fragrant God’s bright day.

Praise him, ye bright people, with harvest hymn of joy;O give to God a hymn of praise, and love without alloy.

The creamy breadfruit blossoms point upward to the sky,to tell that God’s rich blessings fall on us from on high. The canefields wave in greeting, clad in their verdant dress;and citrus fruits swing slowly in golden loveliness.

Praise him, ye bright people, with harvest hymn of joy;O give to God a hymn of praise, and love without alloy.

We thank thee for the sunlight on each day newly born, that blends with rain in blessing the tender ears of corn:that ripens into beauty fair fruits of every kind-bananas, pears, star-apples, and cherries purple-lined.

Praise him, ye bright people, with harvest hymn of joy;O give to God a hymn of praise, and love without alloy.

Young coconuts encircle the warm hearts of the trees, beneath the green boughs hiding, and rustle in the breeze.Nature her many voices, each day with joy uplifts!Shall we not thank our Father for all his wondrous gifts.

*Alternative first lines: In this our bounteous country.

God of the earth and sky, Lord of our hills and plains, Ruler of night and day, bright sun and cooling rains O bounteous Lord, to thee we raiseour harvest hymn of joyful praise.

’Mid dancing azure seas, upheld by thy command, our lovely islands rise in tropic splendour planned. And we are stewards of thy graceuntil we see thee face to face.

thine is the fruitful field, the broad-leaved plantain thine; banana, slender cane, tall palm and lowly vine.Thine own, O Lord, we bring to thee,of all thy bounty rich and free.

Star-apples, purple-dyed ’mid leaves of bronze and green! With ackees’ scarlet hue gay citrus gold is seen.Thou matchless artist! Here may wethine own eternal beauty see.

God of love! Not alone in nature’s form we find that thou are great and good, and merciful and kind:for Jesus died, that we might cometo share our heavenly Father’s home.

As we with thankful hearts these festive anthems sing, and gladly to thy house our harvest offering bring,O, help us, Blessed Trinity, ourselves to consecrate to thee.
