Opening Prayer

Wise and gracious God,you spread a table before usand nourish your people with the word of lifeand the bread of heaven.

In our sharing of these holy gifts, show us our unity in youand give us a taste of the life to come.

We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Sonwho lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God forever and ever.

Introit

Hymn 498

Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, joined with power: he is able, he is able, he is willing; doubt no more.

Come, ye needy, come, and welcome; God’s free bounty glorify;true belief and true repentance, every grace that brings us nigh, without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy.

Come, ye weary, heavy-laden, bruised and broken by the fall;if you tarry till you’re better, you will never come at all:not the righteous, not the righteous - sinners Jesus came to call.

Let not conscience make you linger. nor of fitness fondly dream;

all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him:this he gives you, this he gives you; ’tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

Lo! The incarnate God, ascended, pleads the merit of his blood;venture on him, venture wholly; let no other trust intrude:none but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good.

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Collect

Proper 15 (page 177)Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly lie: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Saint BartholomewAlmighty and everlasting God, who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach your Word: Grant that your Church may love what he believed and preach what he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading

1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14 Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I should give you." And Solomon said, "You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?" It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, "Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honour all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life."

Psalm 111

1. I will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart * secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation.

2. The works of the Lord are great * sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

3. His work is worthy to be praised, and had in honour * and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4. The merciful and gracious Lord hath so done his marvellous works * that they ought to be had in remembrance.

5. He hath given meat unto them that fear him * he shall ever be mindful of his covenant.

6. He hath shewed his people the power of his works * that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.

7. The works of his hands are verity and judgement * all his commandments are true.

8. They stand fast for ever and ever * and are done in truth and equity.

9. He sent redemption unto his people * he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his Name.

10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom * a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; the praise of it endureth for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end.

Second Reading

Ephesians 5:15-20 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hymn 471

Put thou thy trust in God, in duty’s path go on;walk in his strength with faith and hope, so shall thy work be done.

Commit thy ways to him, thy works into his hands, and rest on his unchanging word, who heaven and earth commands.

Though years on years roll on, his covenant shall endure;though clouds and darkness hide his path, the promised grace is sure.

Give to the winds thy fears; hope, and be undismayed:God hears thy sighs and counts thy tears; God shall lift up thy head.

Through waves and clouds and storms his power will clear thy way:wait thou his time; the darkest night shall end in brightest day.

Leave to his sovereign sway to choose and to command;so shalt thou, wondering, own his way, how wise, how strong his hand.

Gospel

John 6:51-58 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh." The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" So Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever."

Sermon

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.ALL: Amen.

Offertory

Hymn 522

I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me;but I long to rise in the arms of faith, and be closer drawn to thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord, by the power of grace divine;let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in thine.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

Oh, the pure delight of a single hour that before thy throne I spend, when I kneel in prayer, and with thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

There are depths of love that I cannot know till I cross the narrow sea;

there are heights of joy that I may not reach till I rest in peace with thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to the cross where thou hast died, draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious, bleeding side.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

FORM D (page 140)

PRESIDENT

All glory, praise, and thanksgiving be unto you, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, you created the world and all mankind, and of your tender mercy gave your only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon Him, and to suffer death upon the cross, for our redemption. He made there, by His own oblation of Himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and He instituted, and in His holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of His precious death, until His coming again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech you; and be pleased to accept, bless and sanctify these gifts and creatures of bread and wine, that they may be for us the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

For, on the night He was betrayed

He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me”.

And after supper He took the cup of wine:

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins,

Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

PRESIDENT

In faith we acclaim You, O Christ

ALL:

Dying You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life; Christ Jesus, come in glory.

Now therefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we your servants with all your holy people, having in remembrance the blessed passion, mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension of your beloved Son, do offer unto your Divine Majesty this Bread of eternal life and this Cup of everlasting salvation, rendering thanks to you for the wonderful redemption which you have made possible for us in Him.

And we beseech you O Father, to accept upon your heavenly altar this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and to grant that by the merits and death of your Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and all your whole Church may obtain remission of our sins and all other benefits of His passion.

And we pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit all who shall be partakers of this holy Communion may be filled with your grace and heavenly benediction, and be numbered in the glorious company of your Saints.

And here we offer and present unto you O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy and lively sacrifice.

And although we are unworthy to offer unto you any sacrifice, yet we beseech you to accept this, our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits but pardoning our offenses;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto you, O Father Almighty, throughout all ages, world without end.

PEOPLE

Amen.

The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you and remain with you always.Amen.

Recessional Hymn

Hymn 533

O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame;a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb!

What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void the world call never fill.

Return, O holy Dove, return, sweet messenger of rest:I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast.

The dearest idol I have known, whate’er that idol be,help me to tear it from thy throne, and worship only thee.

So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame;so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.
