Opening Prayer

Almighty and eternal God,to Jesus Christ, the first born from the dead, you have granted everlasting dominionand a kingship that shall not pass away.

Remove from us every desire for privilege and power, that we may imitate the sacrificial love of Christ our Kingand, as a royal and priestly people, serve you humbly in our brothers and sisters.

Grant us through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit,God forever and ever.

Introit

Hymn 358

Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim, and publish abroad his wonderful name; the name all-victorious of Jesus extol; his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

God ruleth on high, almighty to save; and still he is nigh: his presence we have. The great congregation his triumph shall sing, ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

Salvation to God who sits on the throne! Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son.The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim, fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right: all glory and power, all wisdom and might, and honour and blessing, with angels above, and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

First Reading

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne, his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.

Psalm 93

1 The LORD is King; he has put on splendid apparel; * the LORD has put on his apparel and girded himself with strength.

2 He has made the whole world so sure * that it cannot be moved;

3 Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; * you are from everlasting.

4 The waters have lifted up, O LORD, the waters have lifted up their voice; * the waters have lifted up their pounding waves.

5 Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, * mightier is the LORD who dwells on high.

6 Your testimonies are very sure, * and holiness adorns your house, O LORD, for ever and for evermore.

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. Hymn 197

The Lord is King! Lift up thy voice, O earth, and all ye heavens rejoice; from world to world the joy shall ring, ‘The Lord omnipotent is King’.

The Lord is King! Who then shall dareresist his will, distrust his care,or murmur at his wise decrees,or doubt his royal promises?

He reigns! Ye saints, exalt your strains;your God is King, your Father reigns;and he is at the Father’s side, the Man of love, the Crucified.

Alike pervaded by his eyeall parts of his dominion lie;this world of ours and worlds unseen, and thin the boundary between.

One Lord one empire all secures;he reigns, and life and death are yours;through earth and heaven one song shall ring,‘The Lord omnipotent is King’.

Gospel

John 18:33-37 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

Sermon

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen or unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.ALL: Amen.

Hymn 742

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love:the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;we may not count her armies, we may not see her King;her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.

Offertory Prayer

PRESIDENT AND PEOPLEFather, we offer to you these gifts which you have given us; this bread this wine this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives, and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit a reasonable, holy, and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

FORM D (page 140)

PRESIDENT

All glory, praise, and thanksgiving be unto you, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God, you created the world and all mankind, and of your tender mercy gave your only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon Him, and to suffer death upon the cross, for our redemption. He made there, by His own oblation of Himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and He instituted, and in His holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of His precious death, until His coming again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech you; and be pleased to accept, bless and sanctify these gifts and creatures of bread and wine, that they may be for us the Body and Blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.

For, on the night He was betrayed

He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to His disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me”.

And after supper He took the cup of wine:

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins, Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

PRESIDENT

In faith we acclaim You, O Christ

ALL:

Dying You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life; Christ Jesus, come in glory.

Now therefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we your servants with all your holy people, having in remembrance the blessed passion, mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension of your beloved Son, do offer unto your Divine Majesty this Bread of eternal life and this Cup of everlasting salvation, rendering thanks to you for the wonderful redemption which you have made possible for us in Him.

And we beseech you O Father, to accept upon your heavenly altar this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and to grant that by the merits and death of your Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and all your whole Church may obtain remission of our sins and all other benefits of His passion.

And we pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit all who shall be partakers of this holy Communion may be filled with your grace and heavenly benediction, and be numbered in the glorious company of your Saints.

And here we offer and present unto you O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy and lively sacrifice.

And although we are unworthy to offer unto you any sacrifice, yet we beseech you to accept this, our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits but pardoning our offenses;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto you, O Father Almighty, throughout all ages, world without end.

O island in the sunwill to be me by my father’s handall my days I will sing in praiseof your forest watersyour shining sand

I see woman on bended knee Cutting cane for her family I see man at the water side Casting nets at the surge in tide

O island in the sunwill to be me by my father’s handall my days I will sing in praiseof your forest watersyour shining sand

I hope the day will never come

When I can’t awake to the sound of drumNever let me miss carnivalWith calypso songs philosophical

O island in the sunwill to be me by my father’s handall my days I will sing in praiseof your forest watersyour shining sand.

National Anthem of Barbados

In plenty and in time of needWhen this fair land was young

Our brave forefathers sowed the seedFrom which our pride is sprung

A pride that makes no wanton boastOf what it has withstood

That binds our hearts from coast to coastThe pride of nationhood

ChorusWe loyal sons and daughters all

Do hereby make it knownThese fields and hills beyond recall

Are now our very ownWe write our names on history's page

With expectations greatStrict guardians of our heritage

Firm craftsmen of our fate

The Lord has been the people's guideFor past three hundred years

With him still on the people's sideWe have no doubts or fears

Upward and onward we shall goInspired, exulting, free

And greater will our nation growIn strength and unity

NATIONAL PLEDGE

I pledge allegianceTo my country Barbados

And to my flagTo uphold

And defend their honourAnd by my living

To do credit to my nationWherever I go.
