Saturday, December 8th - Feast of the Immaculate Conception Holy Day of Obligation

Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception will be at 9:00 a.m. There will be no 8:00 a.m. Mass that day. Saturday night Mass at 5:00 p.m. is the Vigil Mass for Sunday.

The Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the Cathol ic Church maintaining that from the moment she was conceived, the Blessed Virgin Ma ry was kept free of original sin and was filled with the sanctifying grace normally conferred during bapt ism. It is one of the four dogmas in Roman Catholic Mariology.

Mary is often called the Immacula ta (the Immaculate One), particularly in artistic and cultural contexts.

TAKE TEN WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Spend 10 minutes reflecting on next Sunday’s Scripture Sunday, May 6 (Sixth Sunday of Easter) Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 1 John 4:7-10 John 15:9-17 In the Gospel, Jesus challenges His disciples to love one another as He loves them, that is, with a self-sacrificing love. This, truly, is the love we are called to have for others.

Th is weekend, approximately 40 of our high school juniors will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Kopacz. This promises to be a joy-filled event for our young people and for their

families. At a deeper level, however, the Sacrament of Confirmation reminds us of the

reality of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Shortly after Jesus ascended into heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles at Pentecost, thereby giving rise to the birth of the Church. In the centuries that followed, the Holy Spirit has animated the People of God, enabling us to live lives of faithful discipleship and to bring about greater fruit in the Kingdom of God here in our world.

Make no mistake, we are still in need of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit here and now. We increasingly live in a world that is divided, dangerous, and violent. Furthermore, I believe that humanity is more and more under the influence of the Evil Spirit, Satan, than under the influence of God’s Holy Spirit. With all this being said, I pray that you all pray fervently to the Holy Spirit each day for the Spirit’s guidance and care. The Holy Spirit offers us many wonderful Gifts (Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Strength, Fear of the Lord), as well as great Fruits (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control). These Gifts and Fruits are in great demand now more than ever. May we experience them in ever-greater measure so that we can live lives that are graced and blessed by God.

Spend 10 minutes with your family reflecting on next Sunday’s Scripture Sunday, June 2 (The Ascension of the Lord) Acts 1:1-11 Ephesians 1:17-23 Luke 24:46-53

Am I cognizant of Jesus’ presence in those around me? Do I realize that others may encounter Jesus in me?

As we continue our exploration of the Holy Spirit, most of us (I hope) remember learning about the Gifts and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit when we went through Confirmation preparation. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are

specifically found in ISAIAH 11:1-4, and they are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Strength, Knowledge, Fear of the Lord, and Piety.

You’ll notice that the Gifts of the Spirit assist us in knowing more about who God is and what God wants, and then give us a greater capacity to accomplish that. In this day and age, knowing God’s will more clearly and being able to accomplish it is of utmost importance. We live in a culture that increasingly doubts the existence of God, and as a result, focusses more on satisfying the ‘Self” rather than ‘God.’ Sadly, if our only concern is continually satisfying the ‘Self,’ we will be in for a difficult, lonely life. It is only in knowing and doing ‘God’s’ will that we will have any hope for lasting peace and happiness.

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are found listed in GALATIANS 5:22-23. These are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. It has been said that the Fruits of the Spirit are the offspring of the Gifts of the Spirit, and that the Gifts generate the Fruits. That makes sense, as I do not think one will ever have love or joy or patience or kindness without first opening oneself to and welcoming the Gifts of the Spirit first. And these fruits are what everyone really wants deep down, for who among us doesn’t want to feel love, or to experience joy, or to have more patience (especially in traffic)!

It pleases God to bestow the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit upon us. However, we need to do our part to open ourselves to these Gifts and Fruits, and to welcome them into our lives. I’ll talk about how to better do that next week.

June 27, 2021 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

W hen I was student at Mundelein Seminary back in the mid-1990s, I had the luxury of having a chapel just down the hall from my room. There, I could pop in at any hour of the day or night to spend time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. It was a tremendous convenience, and it helped

foster my belief even more in the ‘real presence’ of Christ in the Eucharist. I mention this because I believe actually spending time with our Lord in the Blessed

Sacrament is the key to having a greater belief in the ‘real presence.’ For me, whenever I am in the presence of the Eucharist, especially in private prayer, I usually do one of two things. First, I regularly visit with Him about my specific concerns. I may thank our Lord for all His blessings. I may express contrition for sins I have committed. I will usually offer up prayers for other people who need them. Whatever is on my mind at that particular moment is what I offer to our Lord in prayer.

The other practice I have is to sit silently in His presence and, for lack of a better expression, let Him ‘work on me.’ Much like a doctor will work on a patient on the operating table, or like a mechanic will work on a car up on the lifts in a garage, I imagine the Lord working on me to purify me of sinful habits, to strengthen whatever weak areas I have, to communicate to me something specific He wants me to know. The Lord knows me better than I know myself, so by my simply placing myself in His presence and giving Him permission to do what He needs to do to me, the Lord hopefully continues to form me into who He wants me to be.

I encourage all of you to try and make regular visits to the tabernacle during the week to just spend time with Christ in the Eucharist. It isn’t difficult, for there is no right or wrong way to pray in His presence. Like someone long ago said about how to be successful in marriage, at a job, or anything really, “90% of it is just showing up!’ Therefore, just show up and put yourself in the Lord’s presence. He will take it from there!

Volunteers Needed! Meals-On-Wheels: St. Richard Church delivers meals from an assigned menu to the Jackson area the second Tuesday of every month. To volunteer to prepare or deliver food, contact Tommy Lamas. Stewpot: St. Richard Church sends volunteers to Stewpot Lunch Serve and Stewpot Pantry one week per quarter. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul In today’s Gospel, we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter, and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer, we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones, and all those who are suffering. This week, please join the society of St. Vincent de Paul in praying for the healing of all who are ill, especially those with no one else to pray for them. $ A Month Club: Whenever you are grocery shopping, please remember to pick up extra non-perishable food items. The items are distributed to Deliver Me Seniors and the Good Samaritan Center. Both organizations use donations to feed the elderly. Donations can be dropped off in the large can in the back of the church.

Coffee & Creed will meet this Sunday, June 27. They will continue the series from Ascension Press called “Hebrews: The New and Eternal Covenant” at 9:15 A.M. in Glynn Hall.

Extraordinary Minister Training There will be a training for Extraordinary Ministers on Thursday, July 1 at 6 P.M. in the church. This mandatory training will last one hour. Please contact the church office for more information.

The St. Richard Bereavement Support Group will meet THURSDAY, July 8, at 6:30 P.M. in FOLEY HALL. Judy Bryant is one who knows grief and still lives to help others. She has lost her husband, son, and daughter at different times through the past years and has learned how to lean into the grief, knowing it will come back on you if you don’t go through it. Hurting with hope still hurts, but you can live and laugh again. This group is for those who are hurting from losing a loved one OR for those who are trying to comfort and understand the grief of a family member or friend. PLEASE attend and INVITE any friends or relatives you know who are bereaved and hurting. It is open to all. “The Breakfast Club” “The Breakfast Club” will meet on Friday mornings at 7 A.M. We will go to 7 A.M. daily Mass. After Mass, we will head to a local restaurant for breakfast.
