To begin with, if a priest or anyone else asks you for money for anything personal, charitable, or ministerial, VERIFY that it is legitimate. Do not be afraid to ask questions about it. Ask for marketing materials regarding such things as charities. Demand receipts for any donations made. Ask for references of others who are involved in endeavor, or who have also made contributions to it. If the priest hesitates or refuses in doing any of these things, be wary! Also, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, make a check out or give cash directly to a priest unless the money is meant as a personal gift to the priest. Any other checks should be made out specifically to the parish or to the charity. Spend 10 minutes with your family reflecting on next Sunday’s Scripture Sunday, August 30 (Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time) Jeremiah 20:7-9 Romans 12:1-2 Matthew 16:21-27 Looking at the way I lead my life, what aspect do I need to deny myself? In what way can I take up my cross and follow Him?

N ot many people may know this, but I am a huge fan of boxing. I always have been. I know that may seem barbaric to some of you, thinking of your priest liking to watch two people beat the snot out of each other. However, when I was young I was taught that boxing was the ‘sweet

science,’ and that it was as much about one guy having the skills NOT to get hit as for him to hit the other person.

Before a boxing match starts, the referee will usually bring the two fighters to the center of the ring for their final instructions, and the ref will always conclude by telling the two fighters to ‘protect yourselves at all times.’

In the aftermath of the Fr. Vargas case, I want to begin this week exploring ways for parishioners to ‘protect themselves’ financially (and otherwise) from potentially unscrupulous priests and others in positions of authority.

Looking back at the testimony and evidence in the Vargas case, many red flags arose that can serve as future warnings to us about the legitimacy of a priest’s or other’s solicitations for money.

If a priest or any other minister offers some excuse as to why the check should be made out specifically to them, again, be wary! I’ll continue on with this next week.
