The field for the Sham will be redrawn and run Saturday, Mar. 6. As has been the case sev- eral times this winter, the Pro-Ride surface failed to drain sufficiently to conduct live racing following rains that began Friday evening and continued into Saturday. The cancellation marked the fifth weather-related closure of the current winter/spring meeting. AThis is terribly dis- appointing to everyone involved,@ said Santa Anita President Ron Charles. AOur main problem continues to be with the way the main track is draining. We=ve had a very problematic area near the finish line and we were successful in keeping the surface area there dry with the use of tarps, but we have standing water in other areas and it therefore would not be suitable to run on, especially with the prospect of more heavy rain through the afternoon. As we=ve said many times, in this very difficult situation, safety has to be our number-one priority. As disappointing as it is to our horsemen, fans and employees, we simply cannot jeopardize the well- being of our athletes, be they human or equine.@ Live racing is expected to resume Sunday. CASH AND CARY From exercise rider for one of the most respectedstables in the country to being a respected member ofthe juvenile pinhooking community, Cary Frommer has

achieved much in theThoroughbred indus-try. That was on dis-play when Not for Sil-ver (Not For Love), an$85,000 FTMMAYFrommer grad from2008, won the GII Carry Back S. atCalder last Summer. And it was on displaywhen last week whenTrappe Shot (Tapit)

put up a J “TDN Rising Star” J performance in hissecond outing at Gulfstream. Frommer sold the chest-nut on behalf of breeder Hobeau Farm for a sale-record$850,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale, andon Feb. 21, he returned from a lengthy layoff to dust afield of Florida-breds at Gulfstream by 10 1/4 lengths(video). AAs a two-year-old, he was a real no-brainer,@Frommer remembered. AHe was part of the HobeauFarm dispersal, and he's part of their legacy. He wasreal smart, real attractive and just did everything he hadto do the right way.@ Frommer said getting the colt to auction was a teameffort. AI only got the horse as it got closer to the sale,@ saidFrommer. AHobeau=s longtime farm manager CraigWheeler had broken him and the other horses, and thenBarry Berkelhammer had handled him before I got him.So he was shuffled around a little bit, but by the timehe got to the sale, he was ready for everything.@

Trappe Shot helps shine a light on Frommer=s suc-cessful operation, based out of Aiken, South Carolina,in advance of Tuesday=s Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale.

Frommer consigns under herown name. AI think I=m just loaded forbear; I think I have some reallynice horses here,@ Frommer saidof her Calder consignment. AIhave a Harlan=s Holiday colt [hip44] who looks very special, andI have some really nice fillies.Obviously I=m a Tapit fan, and I

have two real special Tapit fillies. They=re a little differ-ent. The one filly out of Purloined [hip 163] is veryspeedy, quick and has a great temperament. She=s abeautiful mover and is just very fast. The filly out ofWild Lucy Black [hip 234] is a big, scopey filly wholooks like she wants to go longer. She won=t work like ahouse on fire, but she=ll gallop out real good and showpeople she=s a big mover. Both of them have greatminds, just like Trappe Shot did. That must be a traitthat Tapit puts on his horses, because they=re all realsmart, intelligent horses.@ Intelligent is an adjective that could also be used todescribe Frommer herself. She is a straight-talking sortwho learned from some of the best in the business, including Hall of Fame trainer Mack Miller. AI got into racing when I was 20, and was able towork for some real big outfits at the time,@ Frommersaid. AI worked as an exercise rider for Buckland Farm, then moved on and rode for Mack Miller.@ Miller trained for Paul Mellon=s famed Rokeby Stables. Some of the more famous horses Frommer got on inthe mornings were Java Gold, winner of the GI TraversS. and GI Whitney H. in 1987, and MGISW You=d BeSurprised. AJava Gold was like a pony,@ Frommer recalled. AHewas very quiet, very easy to deal with and low key. Henever got frazzled about things. He was a real classhorse.@ Frommer said the quality around her at Rokeby left anindelible impression.

AAt one point, I remember looking down Mr. Miller=sshedrow,@ she said. AThere were 30 horses in the barn, and there where three champions that I could see. Healways had just such wonderful horses for Mr. Mellon. It was a fun place to work.@ For a time, Frommer and her husband Tim, who brokeand trained horses for operations like Claiborne Farm,William Haggin Perry and J. Mack Robinson, trained atFair Hill in Maryland in the summer and wintered inAiken. But after awhile the transient life began to lookless appealing, and they decided to call Aiken homeyear-round. AOnce we were living in Aiken full-time and therewasn=t anyway to race, really, I needed something tokeep my mind occupied,@ explained Frommer. AI=m toogoal-oriented to just train horses--I have to have a rea-son and a finish, so that=s were the pinhooking camein.@ Frommer will offer roughly a dozen of her ownpinhooking prospects this season, and has another 25or so for clients. She also sells a quintet for CaryFrommer Ventures, a partnership group she launchedlast year comprising friends and associates. AI always owned my own horses, but had an occa-sional friend who was a partner,@ Frommer said. AWiththe way things were financially last year, it seemed likea good idea to spread things out a little bit. So webrought in a few people, friends that were involved inhorses anyway. Luckily, they are turning out to besome nice horses.@ Frommer is quick to share credit with BarryBerkelhammer, the Ocala-based horseman who helpsher select and purchase yearling prospects. AI do a lot of business with Barry, and get the benefitof his shrewd eye when I=m out buying horses,@ saidFrommer. As for the future, Frommer says she=s content keep-ing things small, consigning for herself and a handful ofclients. AI don=t like a lot of different owners,@ she said. AI=mnot very good, I must say, with dealing with owners.I=m much happier dealing with the horses.@ -LM

AThat didn=t help his con-centration, but he=s better than them and is a very goodhorse who is improving all the time.@ Trainer MarcoBotti added, AEverything went well, so we are de-lighted. I expect he will come on a lot for the run, andhe picked up nicely off an even pace and has just doneenough. It=s perfect timing for the Dubai World Cup,and is so far, so good.@ Video, courtesy of attheraces.
