Sunday, April 8, 2018 St. Kilian Catholic Church - www.stkilian.com 2 U T H E P A S T O R’ S P A G E ALLELUIA! Christ is risen! This Easter 2018, the victory of Christ over sin and death coincides well with great news for our parish. Thanks to constant prayer, the help of a commercial real estate broker, and wide consultation with lay and clergy leaders in our parish, we have a lease of our closed school building. It is a perfect arrangement for Saint Kilian. No parish property will be sold. In addition, the school building is being leased as is. After school hours, we have full use of the building and gym for parish ministries. Religious education (faith formation), Hispanic ministry, youth group, CYO activities, parish festivities and more, will be unaffected by the lease. As you may recall from my previous report on the Stewardship of our Buildings in October 2017, the infrastructure of our buildings is in need of maintenance and expensive repairs. An architectural analysis was made in the past few months by DeBruin AIA. The school building and gymnasium will both need a new roof within the next three years; and the rectory immediately. Other essential repairs will be needed over the next five years. Although the lease of our school building will bring in funds, they will not be sufficient to enable us to keep up with annual parish operation costs, and the renovation of our buildings. Consequently, Saint Kilian parish leadership has recommended to me that we engage the services of a Capital Campaign Drive company. In the next months, there will be a follow-up mailing to your home concerning our buildings’ condition, and information on a Saint Kilian Capital Campaign. Also, there will be a meeting to which all parishioners will be invited. Parish leadership will communicate with you our current status, take questions, and provide answers. Saint Kilian is not my parish; it is our parish. It is our home. Together, empowered by the Holy Spirit at work among us, we will continue the great proclamation of the gospel. By renovating and modernizing our buildings, we will provide for future generations. The lease arrangement will allow us to put money in reserves and consolidate our resources. Become part of the discussion. Become engaged in our mission. Prayerfully consider how you can support our parish with your time, your talent, and your financial support. Thank you for your ministry. Thank you for your generosity! Happy Easter and God bless you - Father Bruce Powers, Pastor

GOSPEL MEDITATION -ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OFSCRIPTURE

Divine Mercy SundayShould we be a little easier on Thomas? The

last few days have been a whirlwind. On Thursday, aPassover celebration went horribly awry as Jesuswas betrayed and taken into custody for unstatedcrimes. Less than 24 hours later, the simple arrest hasturned into a death sentence to be carried out that veryafternoon. Most of the disciples fled, includingThomas. He would have heard of the events of GoodFriday secondhand, in shock over the death of hisLord and Master. Then Sunday morning arrives withjoy from a few disciples—Jesus is risen! But there isno persistent sight of him, only Mary Magdalene’s

quick moment in the garden and an empty tomb.Another day passes. The Apostles are gathered thatMonday night, but Thomas is absent. He returns toa jubilant report of the risen Lord. Again, Thomashas seen nothing.

The experience must have been surreal.Did Jesus really appear raised from the dead? Didhe really suffer and die? Has all of this been somestrange hoax? Desperate for an answer, Thomasinsists, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in hishands and put my finger into the nail marks and putmy hand into his side, I will not believe.”

After his resurrection, Jesus’ body—mangled and bloody from the crucifixion—isrestored. Did it need the scars? A perfected bodywould have taught us one lesson: everything isrenewed as it once was, the past erased. Jesuschooses another lesson, however. He retains hisscars that we might know him. In the whirlwind ofour lives, we make our own mistakes, our ownbetrayals and compromises. In the resurrectedJesus, we see a God who does not forget his ownsorrow. We are invited to meet him—wound forwound—and place our hand on his own nail-scarred palm, the eternal sign of his everlastingmercy.

A recent conference hosted by Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre addressed the epidemic ofaddiction, which affects us all. Among other things, we learned that the majority of people of faith whoare either afflicted or affected by addiction say that they never considered reaching out to their church

for support. We are all touched by the disease of addiction. Our pastoral team may not have a solution, but we may

know of some resources that you haven’t tried. Or perhaps you may simply need someone to talk to.Please know that there is no need to suffer alone. For information about additional resources, call ParishSocial Ministry at 516-756-9656; for an appointment to speak with one of our priests, call 516-249-0127.

TODAY IS THE DAY OF TOTAL FORGIVENESSAS TOLD TO US BY GODTHROUGH ST. FAUSTINA

For every person who unites him/her self with theobservation of this this day on which He opens His arms to usall and welcomes us in.

We, in the Respect Life movement are particularlyconcerned with the healing of the wounds that are caused byabortion, whether recent or long past. The suffering comes inmany agonizing forms: sadness, loss, regret, grief, anger, guilt, fear and the inability to relate to other children andsometimes just a quiet prevailing underlying unhappiness.

The sin of abortion, as every other sin, can and will beforgiven in the Sacrament of Confession. This is the specialday on which our Risen Lord brings that to our attention. It is a day entirely dedicated to HIS MERCY. Confession onthis day or within a short time brings TOTAL FORGIVENESSOF ALL SINS. Detailed information about this special day canbe found on line - search Divine Mercy and just keep reading. The Diary of St. Faustian is a wonderful source for thedeepest understanding of this devotion.
