SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2009 CHENNAI TIMES 3 Unlike beer and wine, all spirits are originally completely clear and colourless. Their golden browns and other hues are the result of the ageing process. The perfect Lakshmi-Ganesh pooja H ave you always wanted to perform the perfect Lakshmi Ganesh pooja but never knew how? Times Music’s latest offering Lakshmi Poojan is not just another Deepavali devotional album but also a comprehensive step-by-step guide to performing an authentic Lakshmi Ganesh pooja right in your own home. Conceptualised and produced by Dr BP Vyas & sung by Kshitij Tarey, the album not only in- cludes the authentic aartis to be recited during the pooja but also an entire list of materials re- quired and instructions through commentary. It also elaborately explains the significance of the pooja and the various rituals to be carried out. With all of this avail- able on a single audio CD, it’s the best Deepavali gift your money can buy this season. I t was the silver jubilee anniversary celebrations of a popular art gallery in the city, and as expected, artists, photographers and well-wishers flocked in to partake of the celebrations. The host for the evening was the gracious Sha- ran Apparao, who made sure guests were well-en- tertained and mingled freely with everyone. On the occasion, ace fashion photographer Monika Ghurde made her presence felt in an un- derstated-yet-elegant sari and her husband, pho- tographer Bharath, was his cheery self. Artists Thyagu, Mark and Ra- machandra had fun chatting and enjoying the celebrations togeth- er, while Shilpa, dressed in a trendy kurta smiled pret- tily for the lensmen. The event proved to be a cosy-posy get-to- gether, all in the name of art! T hat grey, gloomy morning, just hours after the deadly 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami had struck; Sangeetha Stanley took a stroll along the beach. A stroll that lasted six hours and changed the course of her life. And when, ten days later, she went back to the same place, she saw pictures of dead loved ones outside every home, some dead in the Tsunami, others dead by choice, it strengthened her resolve to do some- thing for the affected. Therein began her journey of reconstructing lives, building hope and spreading the love. But the foundation for her voyage was laid long before this, when in 1986, Sangeetha’s in-laws took in two destitute children. “But it was when the Tsunami struck that we started working with women in the coastline of Tondiarpet,” recalls Sangeetha, “I wanted to do something substantial and sustainable. So I got them trained in stitching and embroidery.” And this was how HandsnCrafts, their handi- crafts venture, was born in 2006, with the main focus of providing a proper job to the less fortunate. The enter- prise which sells craft items made by women, has three units in the city— Aynavaram, Tonidarpet and Peram- bur, and her friends from the UK de- sign the items (all made from natural products) for her. Last year, to enhance the marketing, they opened a retail outlet, and along with it, a café (a franchise of a popu- lar coffee chain), where Sangeetha counsels any one who needs a helping hand and an empathic ear. She smiles, “Coffee and counselling is a great concept and my dream was to talk and listen to people over a cuppa. But the usual coffee places were prov- ing to be too noisy. And so, I decided to start up my own café. Anyone who walks in can avail of the service. I want my café to be like a Banyan tree, where people can come and find a per- sonal place for themselves. I want everyone who comes in to leave smil- ing and with their heads held high.” Sangeetha has people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and social and financial standing, pouring their hearts out to her. “Most of my clients are young- sters. Teenagers come with parental woes, while the slightly older bunch comes with pre and post marital worries,” she elucidates. Both these ventures come under one common wing — The Aark, that is cel- ebrating its first anniversary today. “The sole purpose of The Aark is to bridge the gap between the rich and poor, give the physically challenged and underprivileged a chance to earn and be proud of themselves and most of all, make people happy. Seeing peo- ple smile makes all the road blocks we’ve faced, worth it,” gushes Sangeetha. And what are the road blocks they have faced so far? “Since I manage everything on my own, time manage- ment is a huge hassle,” she sighs, “Things would be a lot easier if I were to centralise the three crafts units, but then the very purpose of providing jobs would be lost.” What keeps her going, then? “The image from the Tsunami is my biggest inspiration. This apart, my God and my family have been major strengths. At the end of the day, my enterprise is all about empowerment, and I need to stay empowered myself for that to happen!” she concludes with zing.
