Experience

Paris in 2011!

Dear Pre-Collegians:

Bonjour! A Parisian adventure awaits you. Paris is a dynamic metropolis

and one of the loveliest, most exciting, most romantic capitals in the world.

The whole history of Europe breathes through its architecture, its avenues,

and its bridges. To study in Paris today means to be positioned near

the center of the past, as well as being on the edge of the modern world...

where fashion and glamour abound.

Summer Study In Paris (SSIP) is extremely proud to offer a “Total

Pre-Collegiate Experience” at The SORBONNE... in an international setting

that encourages stimulating academics, new friendships from around

the world, and the development of self-confidence and independence...

all in a supervised setting.

The SORBONNE is one of the most prestigious and famous

universities in the world. Founded in 1253, its centuries of history

hallow in the halls and classrooms of its various buildings, immersed

in the fabulous Latin Quarter. The University helps us to combine an

outstanding education with the vast cultural assets of European history.

French language courses are offered at all levels for COLLEGE CREDITS in our 5 week program and

at all levels as non-credit courses in both our 5 and 3 week programs. All other 5 week and 3 week

program enrichment courses (non-credit) are taught in English. A knowledge of French is

not necessary to attend either program session. The University provides our educational site

and the city of Paris provides one of the most exciting classrooms imaginable.

SSIP creates an environment that is academically challenging yet socially, culturally and recreation-

ally exciting. Qualified high school students completing 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade are offered the

unique opportunity to “taste” college life in a relaxed summertime atmosphere and, at the same time,

be immersed in the charm and culture of France. Personal growth, time management, study skills,

motivation and community living are all a part of the SSIP experience!

Summer Study In Paris offers a gradual transition into the academic world. By sharing

your summer with new friends from all parts of the globe, students find the concept of university

life less threatening. A pre-matriculation program at The SORBONNE reduces the anxiety often

associated with college entrance. The security and confidence built prior to your freshman year will

prove invaluable for success throughout your college career!

Summer Study In Paris is a TOTAL EXPERIENCE complete with exciting non-classroom activities

to fill your non-study time. Creatively planned daily excursions focus on the “sights and

sounds” of Paris, an endless sea of cultural and social happenings. Enrichment classes, athletics and

recreational activities add diversity to our busy days. Fun-filled evenings include dance clubs, café

nights, movies, shows, “Paris by Night” excursions, Bastille Day Fireworks, and more (see pages 4-5 for

all activity details).

Three weekend excursions outside of Paris ARE INCLUDED in both programs. Visits to

Chateau Country, Disneyland Paris, and Versailles are experiences you will always remember.

Our EXCLUSIVE CONCEPT of weekend travel is included in the program fee (see pages 6-7 for

complete information) and permits all students to experience the many treasures of France.

An optional 3 day trip to London is also available in our five-week program.

A summer at The SORBONNE is an outstanding educational experience in the heart of Europe’s

greatest cultural capital. We thank you for your interest in Summer Study In Paris and look for-

ward to having you apply. Studying abroad often raises many questions. Please feel free to call us.

FABULOUS SIGHTS...FABULOUS EXCURSIONS...

FABULOUS SUM M ER !

The “flavor of France” continues asSummer Study provides three unique

opportunities for students to take fulladvan tage of their visit to France. These day excursions complement the more localParis experiences offered regularly during theprogram.

The excursions are:

1 PALACE OF VERSAILLES VERSAILLES, FRANCE:

The Palace and Gardens of Versaillesare among the most prestigious Europeanmonuments and are certainly the finestand most complete achievement of 17thcentury French art. More recently famed as the location chosen for the signing ofthe peace treaty ending World War II, thepalace is enjoyed by millions of visitorseach year.

Louis XIV installed his court and seat of government at the Palace. We willtour this magnificent architectural feat, complete with the famous Hall of Mirrorsand the apartments where the Royal families of King Louis XV, MarieAntoinette, and Louis XVI lived. Thebreathtaking formal gardens behindthe Palace were designed with canals, groves and floral patterns. The beautifulfountain pools are adorned with marbleand bronze statues. Versailles is truly awondrous spectacle.

2 CHATEAU COUNTRY AND THE LOIRE VALLEY:

No trip to France is complete without anexcursion to the beautiful French country-side. Passing through quaint towns, vastsunflower fields and farmland, we enterthe fabulous Loire Valley, famous for thecastles of the aristocracy. Often risingabove a village, it is impossible to remainindifferent to the beauty of the imposingchateaus, a reflection of eternity and themost glorious architectural feats of theFrench Renaissance. A visit to two of thethree described castles brings us back to a fascinating period in history: a period of battles and romance, refinement andcruelty, of plots and stirring adventures.Let us begin.

Chateau Chambord Tour:Built during the 25 year period of 1518 -1543, Chambord is the most impressivechateau of the Loire Valley. With large towers and numerous smaller pinnacles,Chambord has 440 rooms, 365 chimneys,800 cornices and 25 staircases. It’s mostfamous staircase is its picturesque marbledouble spiral staircase (designed byLeonardo Da Vinci), where members of the royal family could use this staircase at the same time and not pass each other.Try it yourself, see if you can find yourfriends! It is a palace of a dream come true!

Chateau Chenonceau Tour:Perhaps one of the finest chateaus inFrance, Chenonceau was also built in the early 16th century. Its history has been woven by women and, as such, this chateau possesses much femininecharm. Its gardens are some of the mostpicturesque in the valley. It is truly thecastle from a fairytale. Fortunately, thisremarkable site was spared the wrath ofthe French Revolution and remains in its original beauty for us to appreciate today.

Chateau Cheverny Tour: Situated in Sologne, Cheverny (1634),has always been and continues to be thecenter of “the hunt.” You will still see apack of 70 hounds used during the hunts.Over 2000 deer antlers are displayed in the trophy room. View Cherveny, see itsmagnificent castle and beautiful grounds.

A Maintaining a close student/staff ratio, our highlytrained, motivated, and experienced staff are there to carefor the supervision, safety, and well being for all of ourstudents seven days a week. All of our staff are fluentlybilingual (English/French), from the United States,England and France. Our supervisory philosophy is tocreate a program with many types of activities to keepour students busy during most of their “free time.”Constructive use of non-academic time is the key to oursuccess, a pattern that pre-empts most potential problemsbefore they begin. Our staff is available 24 hours a dayand will supervise our students to all day, night, andweekend activities and travel excursions planned by SSIP.When off campus, all weekend travel arrangements andstaffing will be personally managed by Bill Cooperman, the Executive Director of the Summer Study In Parisprogram. With over thirty years of experience in domes-tic and international student travel programs, he bringsan added dimension of excellence to the entire summer.Recent television interviews on CNN News and theAlmanac of Travel Talk Show, attest to the past expertise brought to this academic program.
