North CentralThe North Central Local Meeting Group met June 12–14, 2016 in one of many Wisconsin’s “breath-taking countryside vistas,” the Heidel House Resort and Spa in Green Lake, Wisconsin. Little did we know that Green Lake is Wisconsin’s deepest inland lake at 237 feet!

President Joe Caravella and friend, Jan Kelling, arranged the event in fine fashion, and 66 members and guests attended. A few early arrivals to the area were able to experience the golf and scope out the shopping extravaganza in the surrounding areas which would be to the delight of the females. President Joe Caravella and Vice President Bruce Motsinger greeted many of the guests on Sunday afternoon, disbursing the usual and customary packet of information. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy that famous and delicious Gray Family “caramels!” This LMG of the H.C.S.C. is celebrating its 40th year of being “chartered” in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. While our attendance does seem to be slimmer each year, we do seem to capture a few first timers, and this year was no different, welcoming two first timers along with new guests.

Sunday evening was a welcome to Green Lake at the Boat Dock Bar, before feasting on good ol’ Wisconsin brats and hamburgers with all the fix-ins! The report received on the cheesecake was excellent, as well as the other fruit pies.

On Monday morning, we all enjoyed a bountiful breakfast buffet via a coupon, rather than returning to the banquet room. There was plenty of time for the golfers to enjoy a good breakfast before golfing at one of the oldest courses, Tuscumbia.

Most of the non-golfers participated in the Catamaran Yacht tour of Green Lake, captained by Ken, who welcomed us with a medley of tunes, which made some of us wonder if he was going to be our entertainer later in the evening. If not, something to consider in the

coming years, as we learned during the cruise, he was a retired music teacher and had recently returned to his “home.” The Monday evening banquet offered Plated Sirloin of Beef, Chicken Picatta, or Pecan Crusted Whitefish options. Joe’s recruiting efforts via a YouTube

audition brought us great entertainment by comedian Mike Mercury. LMG’s secretary, Vyda Bridwell, assures everyone she was not part of the act, while sitting close to the stage, she certainly gave Mr. Mercury ample ammunition to offer us all many laughs!! The cell phone alarm and barking dogs brought the house down!

Golf Prizes were distributed by our Senior Golf Organizer, Gene Siefken. As well, other door prizes of wine or Wisconsin quarters were distributed to some lucky guests. Happy 63rd Anniversary greetings were extended to Past President Jim & Adrea Miles.

Jim Edwards motioned that the LMG contribute $500 to the H.C.S.C. Foundation in memory of North Central Club members/spouses/children who have passed in 2015 and 2016. A second was given by Tom Clarke and all approved.

The meeting was then turned over to President Elect, Bruce Motsinger, who called for the election of a Vice President/President Elect for 2017/2018. A motion by Tom Clarke and a second by Bob McIlvain to nominate Glenn Wiesjhan to this position, a motion to close nominations by Tom Hellmann and a second by Tom Clarke, a unanimous decision. Northern CaliforniaOn May 17-19, the Northern California LMG revisited the Monterey/Carmel area as we had not been there since September 2012. We stayed in Monterey close to the historical section, Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf.

Our home base was the Best Western Plus Inn at 825 Abrego Street in Monterey. Their breakfast room was made available to us for our Tuesday evening reception and Wednesday evening casual cocktail hour.

Tuesday evening, President David Kloose invited C.J. Thomas, Manager of the Salinas Store, to join us at our reception and later for dinner. C.J. brought us up-to-date on what is happening at JCPenney, and especially on the reconstruction of his old store into a one floor layout with a slight expansion in square footage. Jim McKeown gave a brief Treasurer’s report followed by information from David concerning the Convention in San Antonio, and possible locations for our 2017 Spring Meeting. Our next meeting will be in Natomas (North Sacramento) on Tuesday, December 6 at Logan’s Roadhouse Restaurant.

We adjourned to Massaro & Santos overlooking the harbor for dinner. Each person was able to select from their special menu and enjoy a glass of wine and large helping of ice cream or spumoni for dessert.

Wednesday morning, after the complimentary breakfast provided by the Inn, we car pooled to Lula’s Chocolate Factory and store for a tour of the facility. This tour was made possible by members, Grant and Marilyn Lund, as their son Scott is the owner/manager of Lula’s Chocolates (www.lulas.com). Unfortunately, Grant and Marilyn could not join us as Grant is in an assisted living facility in Sacramento owned by their other son and is receiving extra special care.

Scott took time from his schedule to welcome us and give us a brief history of Lula’s Chocolates. Scott’s grandmother had been making chocolates at home in Salt Lake City for some years. When she turned ninety-one she informed the family and Scott that she was no longer making chocolates and invited Scott to take over, which he did under her supervision until Lula was ninety-nine.

Scott moved the production to Monterey as the climate is superior for making premium chocolates. Shelby Lehman conducted the tour of the factory which was educational and very interesting. She provided samples of some of the product as we progressed through the production line. Of course, we ended our tour of the factory in the gift store where we each managed to pull out our credit cards and select chocolates for our personal tastes.

The rest of the day everyone went their own way exploring Monterey and Carmel. We met again at 5:00 PM in the Inn’s breakfast room for a casual cocktail hour provided by Jim and David.Everyone selected their own special restaurant for dinner.

Attendees Included: Patricia and Ben Deem, Bob and Suzie Doyle, David and Sandra Kloose, Jim and Edna McKeown, Helga Miller and brother Peter Matzig, Hal and Mary Monroe, Milt and Jamesa Schulle, C.J. Thomas, Salinas Store Manager.

On Sunday, May 1st, President Jack Johndrow, along with his wife Kim, welcomed 67 arriving guests to the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, North Carolina. Guests were provided with souvenir bags containing event agenda, list of attendees, area information and an assortment of special gifts.

Sunday evening began with a social hour. Jack Johndrow welcomed guests, introduced new members in attendance, covered the events for next few days, and led guests in prayer of thanksgiving before eating. A hospitality room was provided each day for guests to enjoy some refreshments and snacks, as well as being available to visit with friends during the afternoons and evenings during the stay.

On Monday morning, 35 guests boarded buses to vist the largest privately owned house in the United States and a National Historical Landmark, The Biltmore House. Constructed between 1889-1895, this historic site which sits on 8,000 acres, remains today as one of the prominent examples of the Gilded Age.The group moved through the house visiting rooms steeped in history and opulent décor. Guests continued with a visit to the estate gardens and stopped to enjoy a leisurely snack on estate grounds.

Next stop was a visit to The Antler Village and Winery for lunch including a winetasing and some shopping for items to take home. It was a full and rewarding first day for all. Guests not taking the tour took the opportunity to visit downtown Asheville, visiting the many unique shops and having lunch at one of the numerous dining choices available. Monday evening, despite a forecast of rain saw many guests venture out to downtown Asheville for a night of local dining.

On Tuesday morning, 18 golfers headed out to The Broadmoor Golf Club for an 18 hole scramble and lunch, while others boarded a bus to vist the Folk Art Village in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a vist to the historic Grove Park Inn with a guided history tour of this grand facility. Before returning to the hotel, guests enjoyed lunch at the Grove Park Inn.Tuesday afternoon the annual business meeting was held and conducted by Jack Johndrow and Bill Webb. A moment of silent prayer was offered for those members who are no longer with us. A brief financial overview of club’s finances and club memberships was then covered with attendees. Also on the agenda was the discussion of a new name for the Dixie LMG as the clubs membership now exceeds the borders of the composition of states it originally covered at inception in 1967. The Southern California Local Meeting Group met at Lake Mission Viejo, California on May 21st for the fifth consecutive year. Forty-three partners attended the social gathering and picnic overlooking the lake from the Northeast grassy area. Prior to the partaking of wonderful food, everyone socialized and compared recent travels and family events. Lake members Stan Newton, Tony Zarifis, and Larry McGrail provided their lake cards which allowed nonmembers to gain access to this private lake.

All the picnic food was provided by Board Members under the direction of Stan Newton, Vice President, Hospitality. The members who pitched in included: Ron and Kay Salzetti, Mark and Audrey Schultz, Ron and Janice Rhoads, Alan and Melissa Rogers, Stan and Cheryl Newton, Tony and Veta Zarifis, and Larry and Cheryl Noble. The menu included salads, barbequed tri-tip roasts, European style sausages, hot dogs, cookies and a wide variety of beverages. Kay Salzetti prepared a special chocolate sheet cake treat which was enjoyed as a special dessert. Ron Salzetti and MarK Schultz were the master BBQ chefs.

SOUTHWEST BaseballThe Southwest Local Meeting Group held its annual “evening at the ballpark” event on Tuesday, April 26 at the Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas. Our group attended an exciting “Double-A League” baseball game between the Frisco RoughRiders (associated with the Texas Rangers) and the San Antonio Missions (associated with the San Diego Padres).

Heavy and threatening weather was forecast for game time in Frisco so most of our group decided to delay and attend at a later date. Thirteen of our group decided to attend the game and were treated to an exciting game although interrupted with a little rain.

We enjoyed watching the Frisco RoughRiders take a 4-to-3 win over the Missions with a tie breaking run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a single by Joe Jackson. Everyone enjoyed a great evening at the ballpark with food, friends and fun and we look forward to our next outing.

The second half of our event will be held at a later date with the remaining 42 ticket holders to attend.

Attendees Included: Ron Winkler and Ben Vaughan, Norm Welsow and guests Don Vincent and Alex Folz, Tom & Sandra Clarke, Gerry and Barbara Montgomery, David & Mary Tacher and Gary & Beverly Bedrick.

HONOR, CONFIDENCE, SERVICE, COOPERATIONA Nonprofit Foundation Dedicated to Assist Retired Associates and/or Spouses in Need of Financial Assistance

Dear Retired JCPenney Associate,

This letter is to update you on the status of your H.C.S.C. Foundation and how we support many retired JCPenney Associates that have fallen on hard times.

We now have 29 recipients in 19 states receiving ongoing financial assistance. This assistance varies from helping with monthly rent or mortgage payments, healthcare assistance, repairs on houses, cars and many other needs that they might have. This assistance now totals more than $20,000 a month and last year we paid out over $284,000. We constantly get cards and letters from associates stating how grateful they are for this assistance. Some of these associates state that they don’t know what they would do if they were not receiving this assistance. We still are on the lookout for any associate and/or spouse that might need assistance and if you know someone that might qualify, please let us know. As a reminder, the associate, or spouse if the associate is deceased, must be 60 years of age or older and must have completed 20 years of service. The information on each individual will be kept strictly confidential.

With all the strides that we have made, we still need to increase the amount of our distributions to individuals per the Federal Guidelines for 501(c)3 organizations. And, to be compliant with IRS guidelines, we have to average $100,000 annually in donations to maintain our public foundation status. The Foundation is grateful to receive any amount given to it whether that contribution is made on a monthly basis, an annual basis, or a one-time contribution. For example, if every member of our alumni donated $125 annually, we could easily make our goal.

As you know your contribution to the Foundation is tax deductible. Last year, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2016 was passed making qualified charitable contributions (QCD’s) from individual retirement accounts (IRA’s) another permanent option for giving. A QCD allows annual direct transfer of up to $100,000 of tax deferred monies to a qualified charity from an IRA. Under this law, your QCD can replace all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD). Since the funds are sent directly from the IRA to a charity, the funds are not included in your Adjusted Gross Income for that year. The charity receives the full dollar benefit of your QCD and you are taxed on the net amount. Please check with your tax adviser.

We sent out a letter a few months back asking for your assistance. To date we have received only 40 percent of what was donated last year and we are way below the IRS guideline of $100,000 in order to maintain our public foundation status. Just so you know, over 95 percent of what you donate goes directly to assisting fellow JCPenney associates. As we stated before we appreciate any amount that you could give as a donation in support of the Foundation or as a gift in memory of a favorite associate that is no longer with us.

Send your contribution and any questions directly to Larry Noble at the address listed below:

We are so proud of our “Gentle Giant” and all that he stood for. Upon graduation, Mike went to work for the Dallas Police Department, where he served for nine years. Mike loved Dallas and the community he served. Mike is remembered and loved by many family and friends and was known to be a loyal, honest and caring person-the type of man you meet and immediately love.
