We are pleased and appreciative that the community supported Issue 1. With the passage of Issue 1, the District will restore busing, programs and reduce fees for pay-to-participate starting with the 2017-2018 school year. Funds will also be used for general operations throughout the District.

Busing will be restored for all grades – kindergarten through 12th grade – for students who live outside of a half-mile drive of his or her school. Pay-to-participate fees will decrease to $200 for high school sports and $150 for 7th and 8th grade sports. The fee for cheerleading (grades 7-12) and marching band will also be $150. We want to thank all of the volunteers and the community for their support. The efforts of many dedicated levy volunteers helped get our message out that the Riverside Local School District is committed to reinstating instructional programs for our students and restoring services that were reduced or eliminated years back.

All school and community stakeholders are the winners as a strong school system lead to a desirable community. Many variables determine how well a school district performs, but nothing has more of a positive impact than community support.

Keeping Our Community Informed

The District hosted several focus groups with teachers, students and community members to gather input from all stakeholders regarding the design and function of the new elementary schools.

Following the focus groups, the District created

a Building & Design committee consisting of staff, parents and community members, which has been meeting bi-weekly with Fanning Howey, an architecture, engineering and interior design firm, to discuss floorplans and design of the buildings.

In addition, the District hired ICON (with funds from the bond levy) to construct the new buildings, which should break ground in the Spring of 2018.

Riverside Local School District will have a turf field in time for the 2017 high school football and soccer seasons thanks to a sponsorship from Lake Health and money from the Permanent Improvement fund.

Updating the current field with turf provides many benefits including enhanced safety, less maintenance and water cost and more importantly, the ability to open up the field to other school-sponsored sports teams as well as outside community organizations, programs and youth leagues.

“Our goal is to bring as many people to Riverside Campus as we can to create a community feel,” said Superintendent James Kalis. “We want the campus to be a true cornerstone for the entire community.”

The project, which also includes track restoration, is approximately $800,000 to complete. Lake Health has agreed to pay the District $230,000 to be the exclusive Healthcare Sponsor of the District. In return for their sponsorship dollars, the District will place two Lake Health logos on the field as well as provide several other sponsorship opportunities throughout the District. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. The District will host its annual Meet the Teams Night as a Grand Opening for the new turf field in addition to the introduction of the high school fall sports teams and coaches. The evening will also feature a preview performance by the Riverside Regiment marching band. Following the performance, the new turf field will be opened up to allow kids to run around and play catch on the new field.The event is open to ALL community members. Stadium Now Features New TurfThanks To Exclusive Partnership With Lake Health

the District’s Permanent Improvement fund. Money from the Permanent Improvement fund can be used for improvements to school property. It cannot be used for operations or construction of buildings.

Currently, the District spends between $10,000 and $20,000 per year on watering, painting, fertilizing and mowing the football field’s grass. Those costs will decrease significantly with turf.

The lifespan of new turf is approximately 10-12 years. The cost to replace turf is significantly less than the cost to install brand new turf and will be paid for by funds generated from a cell tower that American Tower Corporation will be constructing on the Riverside Campus. The cell tower will generate $19,800 per year for the District for the first five years and then funds will slightly increase every five years after that. In addition, the District will realize additional funds from the cell tower with each additional carrier.

FieldTurf broke ground on the project in early June. The company has installed thousands of turf fields for NFL, soccer, college and high school teams all over the world including The Ohio State University, Mentor High School, Perry High School, West Geauga High School and several other area fields in Northeast Ohio.

“FieldTurf is more dedicated to safety of athletes than any other company in our industry. We have scientific proof from a six-year study that FieldTurf ’s infill is safer than any other infilled surface and a better alternative to natural grass,” said Bob McKeiver, Regional Sales Manager for FieldTurf.

County-Wide Event Focused On Drinking And DrivingRiverside High School hosted a new event called Stay

in Your Lane, which was a real, interactive, intensive program to educate students about the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

Seniors from Madison, Fairport Harbor and Kirtland high schools were also in attendance to experience this program which began with a mock crash scene and then moved into a series of speakers who have been

personally affected by drunk driving. The event ended with a “Walk of Remembrance” to honor local people who have been lost in drunk driving accidents.

The event featured several guest speakers including

Aaron Cooksey, who killed his best friend while driving drunk in 2001. He went to prison for four years and has since traveled the country telling his story. Other speakers included Chagrin Falls Police Officer Dick Goldsmith who lost his daughter to a drunken driver and Matthew Rupert, a Riverside High School graduate who battled with heroin addiction.

The Riverside Rocks 5K will take place on Saturday, October 28 and will feature a Halloween costume contest. Formerly known as the Riverside Cares 5K, this event starts at 8:30 a.m. on the Riverside track and runs through the scenic Heatherstone subdivision. Pre-registration is available online only at www.greaterclevelandxc.com. $17 until October 15, $20 until race day, $25 day of event. Other events include a 1-Mile Walk ($12 or $15 day of event) and a Kids Fun Run (free for ages 6 and under). Canned food items will also be collected and donated to the St. Gabriel Food Bank.

Har Duck Race is scheduled for Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. The event is a joint effort of the Riverside and Harvey Alumni Associations and the funds raised go towards scholarships for graduating students from each school.

The public is invited to watch the rubber ducks float to the finish line in the creek at Helen Hazen Wyman Park off Route 86. Tickets will be sold for $5 or a “five-quack” for $20. Top prize is $500 and winners do not need to be present.
