My Trip to Buckingham Palace! It was a rainy day in mid April when I went to collect the post

from the doormat and, expecting mostly junk mail, to my surprise found a posh looking envelope with “Lord Chamberlain..Buckingham Palace” and EIIR stamped on it. Curiosity getting the better of me, I ripped the envelope open (later wishing I’d been more careful) to find an invitation from Her Majesty to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace!! Weeks of trying on various dresses, hats and shoes ensued until the day, the 29th May, finally arrived.... After a horrendous taxi journey across London (so many roadworks and traffic) we arrived at the back entrance to the palace with just minutes to spare before the gates closed, then had to hotfoot it across the palace gardens to get to the lawn. We got there just in time to see a door open to the left and the Queen and Prince Philip emerge! They stopped at the top of the steps down to the garden and the band started playing the National Anthem. An amazing moment to hear it played Her Majesty’s presence! My disappointment at being at the back of the crowd soon vanished as we realised we were right next to the Royal Tea Tent where surely they were destined! So there we waited patiently behind the rope barrier as the crowds gathered with us. It felt like a long wait as The Yeoman of the Guard marched up and down, but eventually Her Majesty emerged from the crowd and walked across the grass into the tent, followed 10 minutes or so later by Prince Philip. Hurrah! I’d seen them! Thinking that was probably all I almost left my prime spot but luckily decided to hang on a little while longer. I was so glad I did as through the crowd, shaking hands and chatting to people, then came: Princess Anne, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles and last, but certainly not least, the Duchess of Cambridge - Kate!! I remember very little else about that moment as excitement took over. We only got a brief, but very clear view of them all as they walked from the crowd into the tent but as it was completely unexpected to see so many Royals I didnt mind.My husband finally convinced me to leave the spot where I had waited for over an hour to get some refreshments from the Main Tea Tent. Some delicious sandwiches (with the crusts cut off of course) and a lovely cup of tea in a china tea cup with saucer. Wonderfully British. We spent the remainder of the 2 hour party exploring the garden and listening to the band, who played a rather fab instrumental medley of Beatles songs amongst other more traditional pieces. We saw the crowd swoop from the tent back to the palace so assumed the Royal family had now departed. When it was time for us to leave we did so through the palace (taking in two very grand rooms) and spent a while loitering in the courtyard taking photographs (which we weren’t allowed to do in the garden). We then proceeded to walk down The Mall marvelling at all the Union Jacks and preparations for the Jubilee celebrations only a week later, feeling very fortunate to have had that experience, and incredibly proud to be British.

The National Trust has recently launched a nationwide campaign to encourage sofa-bound children to take to the outdoors and enjoy classic adventures from skimming stones to building dens. The ‘50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾’ initiative is in response to a report commissioned by the National Trust which highlighted research that fewer than one in ten children regularly play in wild places compared to almost half a generation ago, a third have never climbed a tree and one in ten can’t ride a bike. The charity’s 50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾ campaign provides a checklist for under-12s (and those who are young at heart) including everything from running around in the rain and bug hunting, to setting up a snail race, damming a stream, flying a kite and making a (delicious) mud pie. Kids can pick up a free 50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾ scrapbook from participating National Trust properties – and start ticking off their outdoor adventures to do list. Plus, the fun can continue at home by visiting www.nationaltrust.org.uk/50things where children can fill in their completed activities and earn points towards their own explorer badge. There are 2 participating National Trust properties in Northamptonshire: Lyveden New Bield between Corby and Oundle and Canons Ashby in Daventry. Some of the 50 things are for older children but many can be done by toddlers so why not get them started right away....

When I Was a Kid

Having 3 children, (not to mention 14 nieces and nephews, 3 godchildren

and many friends with children) I’ve visited countless toy shops over the years, but rarely have I come across one as unique, or as caring with an owner as passionate about what he does, as a new toy shop I visited in Wellingborough recently.

“When I Was a Kid” has been trading successfully through their website, wheniwasakid.co.uk, for over 7 years now (during which time they have won numerous awards including “Best Customer Service” and “Northants Entrepreneur of the Year”) and in March of this year decided to open a physical shop at Nene Court on the Embankment in Wellingborough.

As the name suggests, “When I Was a Kid” specialises in selling wooden and traditional children’s toys that parents will remember from when they were children. From wigwam play tents to wooden jigsaws “When I Was a Kid” has something every child will enjoy and something that will trigger a memory in every parent who visits.

When setting up shop, the owners, Paul Warner and his family, put considerable time and effort into getting the shop just right and this is clear to see from the moment you walk in. The gorgeous wooden bookcases displaying the classic toys, the train running round on a track above your head, the counter made into a wooden fort and the children’s play area (where children can play whilst parents browse) are all testament to the owner’s attention to detail and passion for making the customer experience the best it can be. This level of customer service is so rare to find these days.If you need help purchasing a gift for someone they are more than willing to offer advice and demonstrate different toys until you find that perfect gift. If you just want to browse you are welcome to do so in your own time without pressure to buy.

“When I Was a Kid” sells toys, gifts and puzzles suitable for children from birth upwards. They are open 7 days a week, 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sundays. There is ample, free parking right outside the shop. When I Was a Kid, 8 Nene Court, Embankment, Wellingborough, NN8 1LD.Tel: 01933 426365T: www.twitter.com/wheniwasakidF: www.facebook.com/wheniwasakid

With Olympic excitement reaching fever pitch, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze,

opens on Saturday 14th July and has a timely and appropriate sporting theme for 2012. Created in the shape of a relay runner, the maze has been designed not only to intrigue and delight our appetite for all things Olympian, but also to test visitors’ knowledge of great British sporting heroes.Whilst Team GB gear up for their Olympic challenge nearby at Loughborough University, Wistow Maze is offering visitors an opportunity to join in the patriotic fervour, exercising both mind and body along the way. “This year the Wistow Maze really has the winning combination of fun and learning, as well as being a celebration of one of the UK’s biggest sporting competitions for decades” says Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze.Diana explains: “The challenge for visitors is to find 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the 3 miles of pathways in the giant maze. Each quiz board focuses on a sports event which will help to unravel the answer to the Quiz Trail, whilst also giving top facts about past and present British athletes”. The Wistow Maze attracts over 15,000 visitors each year and has won Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction”. The maze’s mix of high level bridges and viewing towers offers visitors stunning 3D panoramic views of the Leicestershire countryside, along with a rare way of exploring 8 acres of living corn.A real family day out, visitors can not only pit their wits against the maze but can also take part in a variety of mini mazes, games and table top activities in the Activity Funyard. There is also a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. With the Wistow Rural Centre opposite, comprising a cafe, garden centre, model village and numerous shops, there is something to satisfy all ages.At the end of each season, the maze is harvested for cattle fodder and then redesigned the following Spring using GPS satellite technology. The Wistow Maze is open seven days a week from Saturday 14th July to Sunday 2nd September, 10am to 6pm, then weekends only until Sunday 23rd September. About Inspire Dance Studios...Inspire Dance Studios was founded by Miss Katie in 2010. Miss Katie trained at professional colleges and has taken part in many shows, locally and nationally, in all aspects of the ArtsShe is also a professionally qualified member of the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) and is still working as a singer alongside her teaching commitments. Miss Katie decided to open her Performing Arts school so that she could share her talent and love of the Arts with others. Inspire Dance Studios have already participated in many competitions and have a huge variety of classes in their timetable. Miss Katie is always working hard to achieve more qualifications so that she can add more and more classes to the school. “We are at the forefront of the Performing Arts with students already auditioning for paid work. With contacts I picked up during my training and working life you can guarantee a thorough training for everyone” says Miss Katie.

About the classes... What is the aim of the classes? To give children the opportunity to learn and take part in all genres of the Performing Arts both onstage and backstage while having fun.A typical class....Classes usually start with a game to get the children interacting with each other, then depending on the class we will do a warm-up. Following the warm-up we will work on the required technique for the subject and then on dances and exercises for exams and shows. Some of our classes such as Zumbatomic are for fun rather than exam work. Exams are NOT compulsory.

How do classes benefit children? By keeping them fit, helping them improve their gross motor skills, teaching them good behaviour and how to interact with other people from an early age. We also give them the opportunity to take exams, and learn good discipline from this, and perform in shows. This also gives them theatre experience. What ages are the classes for? We take students from age 3 and teach adult classes too. When and where do you run classes? All classes are held at Weekley Village Hall, Weekley Village, Kettering. How long does each class last? Between 45 minutes and an hour. How much does a class cost? Between £3 and £4 depending on the length of the class.

Jenny’s DolphinsSwimming lessons for under 4s

The main aim of the lessons is to prepare younger ones for swimming without any

aids. This is done using the parents to hold them while they learn the foundations for swimming. Once they have learnt to move their arms and legs, various aids are used to build their strength and allow them to create their own momentum for swimming, using mainly their hands for resistance. The lessons are fun and various toys are used to encourage the children, they range from Peppa Pig to an Octopus!! The slighly older children are working towards swimming without aids both above and below the water. Some swim schools concentrate on swiming under the water but I like to ensure that children learn to breathe while they swim so that they can increase the distance and their stamina. When children start school they can continue to swim with me through Montsaye’s swim school and enter into the school at a higher stage than others their own age. Some of my current swimmers have already achieved 5m and 10m without aids by the age of 3 and are more than ready for new challenges in stage 3 of the ASA National Teaching Plan. You do not have to be a great swimmer to attend the lessons but as children learn by copying it is really helpful if the parent loves water over their face too and doesn’t mind getting their hair wet, all with a smile on their face of course! In September the current 3 year old’s are unable to attend in the daytime so if you are thinking of enrolling your child for swimming please register your interest with me now as places are limited.Lessons are living up to expectations and are going from strength to strength. Due to popular demand the number of sessions has increased both on a Tuesday and a Sunday at Rothwell.

Holidaying with Children

sunshade• Medicine essentials such as: plasters,

thermometer, insect repellent, antiseptic cream and calpol. You can buy whole first aid kits designed for being out and about with very young children.

• Baby milk - if your baby is bottle fed it may be best to take ready mixed cartons to avoid stomach upsets from foreign water

• Documention essentials - children must have their own passport. If your child is adopted or only travelling with one parent you may need extra documentation.

• Things to entertain your children - colouring pads and crayons, packs of cards and electronic devices such as ipods or ipads are great as they take up little space and have multiple uses

Useful items:• Reclining buggy with sunshade – useful for

your child’s nap time• Car sunshades and rear view mirror if

you’re hiring a car. • Travel wash if there are washing facilities• Your child’s favourite snacks in case they

don’t like the food abroad. Check whether they’re allowed through customs though

• UV tent - handy for nap time, playing, changing and breast feeding on the beach

• Child monitors - great for keeping track of your child. The parent carries a tracking device while the child wears a bracelet-like contraption. If the distance between the child and the tracker exceeds the pre-defined range, or if the bracelet is taken off, an alarm sounds. You can then push a button to set off a beeper on your child’s bracelet to help you track them down.

• Steriliser tablets - easy to pack and use.

So you’ve got your family summer holiday all booked and it’s now a case of packing and

getting there! Easy when it was just you but when children are involved a little more careful planning and preperation is required. Here are our top tips to help make things a little easier:

General tips:• Pack as lightly as possible. You’ve got

your children, as well as your luggage, to potentially carry or push

• Buy some of the bulky, but cheap, things at your destination eg toiletries, water inflatables, beach toys

• Have baby and toddler products delivered directly to your destination by a specialist company such as www.kids-away.com.

• Check with your holiday accommodation what they supply to avoid taking unnecessary items eg cot, high chair, steriliser

• Take large cases that are easy to pull along• Have just 1 person do the packing for the

family otherwise things can get forgotten or some things packed twice

• Once washed and ironed, put clothes you want to take to one side so that the family can’t wear and dirty them again

• Buy smaller travel size toiletries that take up less space

• Keep a change of clothes for little ones in hand luggage in case they have an accident

• Check if your accommodation has washing facilities. If it does it greatly reduces the amount of clothes you need to take with you.

What to take:Essential items:• Hot weather essentials such as: suntan

lotion, sunhats, sunglasses, parasol or

General tips:• Allow more time than necessary to get to

your destination for unscheduled toilet stops, travel sickness and dealing with tantrums, squabbling and bordem.

• Take a selection of toys and books that you can work your way through on the journey.

• There are many games you can play with your children whilst travelling such as “I Spy” and “Who Am I?”.

• Make sure you have some sick bags and wipes with you - just in case!

• Have plenty of drinks and snacks in case your children get hungry/thirsty

By car:• Plan your journey and research suitable

stop points where the kids can stretch their legs before getting back in the car

• Have a contingency plan for urgent toilet requirements when you’re stuck in a traffic jam or the next service station is a way off. A plastic bottle works well for boys! Pull ups are another solution.

• Portable DVD players are excellent for keeping kids entertained on long journeys. Put on their favourite TV show or film.

• Music and/or story CDs are also good for long car journeys. Take headphones if you don’t want to listen to it yourself!

• Neck pillows are useful for when your child wants to have a sleep, if they’re too old to have a car seat that reclines.

By Aeroplane:• Ask to be seated near other families

who are less likely to get annoyed if your children play up.

• Check with the airline what food they provide for children before you fly as you may need to pre-order.

• Choose a night flight if on long haul as the children will be tired and more likely to sleep.

• Take something for the children to suck

Travelling

on during take-off and landing to avoid discomfort from changes in air pressure. Massaging behind the ear and a gentle tug on the ear lobe can work too.

• It can get chilly on a plane so take jumpers• Most airports have a ‘meet and assist’

service where you’re met at check-in and helped with your children and bags to your plane, ask for this when booking your flight if you need it. Single parents given priority.

• If you’re a member of a frequent-flyer club, you may be able to use a private departure lounge with comfortable chairs, free drinks and snacks and TVs. If you’re not a member, you can sometimes buy a pass to use the lounge.

• Check the latest restrictions on hand luggage before travelling as this will affect what food and drink you can take for your child. It may be better to take powered milk as you can get hot water to make feeds on the flight.

• Check in online if you can to save queuing at the airport and to book suitable seats. Seats at the front with extra leg room are often better with children.

• Low humidity on aeroplanes can sometimes have adverse affects such as dehydration, irritated nostrils or a streaming nose. Ensure your children drink regularly and if they get a streaming nose wet the insides of their nostrils with a little water.

Wherever you’re going this summer we hope you have a fantastic time!

What do you think of when you think of people who see counsellors? The

stereotypical leather couch and a bespectacled old gentleman asking you about your childhood? Ask yourself, do you think that the only people who see counsellors are those with severe mental health problems, on the edge of some kind of breakdown? Well the truth is that that is really not what counselling is like at all. In fact in my 5 years experience as a counsellor and as a counselling client myself, I have found that the majority of session content is about the everyday things; how hard it is to pay the bills or the difficulties in communicating well with a partner or family member. Life, by its very nature, has its ups and downs and, as parents, we often believe it’s part of our responsibility to just get on with it no matter how hard we find it. Even worse, and I’m basing this on personal experience as the mother of two very young children, we often feel like we are failing when we find things tough. It’s as if we think parenthood should come with some kind of magical superpower to go beyond the natural human limits surrounding our ability to cope with life’s challenges! But think about it a different way...If you sprained your ankle would you struggle on without bandaging it? Of course not. You know that if you strap it up properly and give it that extra bit of support that it will regain it’s full strength a lot quicker. Well counselling is just the same. It’s not a medical thing. 99% of the time it doesn’t involve your GP or any other medical professional. I like to think of the definition of counselling as simply ‘space to think’ with the added benefit of having someone there to help you untangle and get perspective on your more complicated and confusing feelings. I personally think of my sessions with my counsellor in almost the same way that I think of my hair appointments, as a little bit of time away from the responsibilities of the children and the house. Time that is just about me and helping myself feel like me again. That’s not to say that counselling is

Counselling – Time to Yourselfeasy though. To get the most out of it you do have to be prepared for it to be, at times, a tough challenge. Maybe in that way it’s slightly more akin to a vigorous sports massage than a haircut. Either way it’s one of those things that I truly believe should be treated as being the right of every person to occasionally indulge in rather than an admission of failure, to be avoided at all cost unless something is ‘wrong.’ There are many different types of counselling (see www.bacp.co.uk/seeking_therapist/theoretical_approaches) and individuals within each type will practice in a way unique to themselves. You may need to try a few before you find the one that suits you best. However, regardless of their approach, all counsellors work within the same basic set of principles. That means that no matter who you see there are certain things you can expect. These things are:• To never be judged for any of your feelings,

thoughts or opinions. A counsellor will always accept and respect you for exactly who you are.

• Complete confidentiality. Unless you or anyone related to you is in significant physical danger, the things you tell your counsellor will never be shared with anyone else. Any potential exceptions to this rule would be made clear to you by your counsellor before you begin your sessions.

• How things seem, from your perspective, will be the main focus of the counsellor. This means the counsellors opinions on your experiences, thoughts and feelings are not what the session is about. The counsellor will want to see what it is like for you, inside your world.

• Trust and openness. Your counsellor will never do anything relating to you or the information you share with them without discussing it with you first.

In our last issue, Spring 2012, we ran a competition to win a place on the new Team Dynamix Weight Loss Programme at Balance Health Club in Kettering. Well our winner, Nicole Harrison,

has taken the course and tells us here how she got on:

Team Dynamix Weight Loss ProgrammeThe winner’s review

The Team Dynamix Programme has been challenging but very rewarding! Not only did I lose 10 pounds and 15 and a half inches in 28 days, I also met a great group of people, gained confidence, improved my fitness and discovered lots of new recipes. The diet is something totally different and new to anything I have heard of before. As it is so different from my usual eating habits, it was initially very difficult. Although as the weeks went on I found the diet easier and also found lots of new recipes that I loved and will definitely continue to use. I also realised that I actually stopped craving lots of foods even one I thought ‘I could not live without!’.The exercise classes are fantastic! I must admit after the first session I could barely walk for the next two days, but it’s surprising how quickly my fitness improved and body got used to the exercise. All the classes followed the same structure but with different exercises, this kept it interesting and new and of course more challenging as the weeks went on. They are in a small group with two instructors; Andrew and Chris, who are brilliant! They keep you motivated and make sure you push yourself to your maximum ability. I had a real sense of achievement after each training session. The programme has been great for me and I have learnt valuable information about diet and exercise and how the body responds to exercise. There are aspects of the diet that I will be keeping in my diet for good and it has given me more self confidence with what I can achieve physically. I would definitely do this course again and would encourages others to do so too.

Team Dynamix is a senssational new weight loss, nutrition and exercise programme.
