Farmers markets grow in popu-larity every year. To make thatwork for the vendors, CornellCooperative Extension (CCE), alongwith the Sullivan County Division ofPlanning & Environmental Manage-ment, Sullivan County Departmentof Public Health, the Sullivan County

Visitors Association and variousfarmers market managers put theirheads together on a project to helpthe markets increase attendance andoverall sales. The project has come tobe known as the Farmers MarketPromotion.

According to CCEs Agriculture & Food Systems Team Leader MelindaMeddaugh, the project will kick offthis year with a soft launch to testthe waters as to what works and whatdoesnt.

The county hired a marketing con-sultant and a design consultant towork together, said Meddaugh.Well be doing survey work to gatherinformation both on people thatattend and dont attend the markets. We will also be working on things likeradio advertising, billboards and sig-nage to attract more people.

Existing markets that signed on to bea part of the Farmers MarketPromotion project were Roscoe, RockHill, Monticello, Liberty, Barryville,Callicoon and Bethel. A $100,000USDA Farmers Market PromotionProgram grant was awarded toSullivan County to help aid the project.

Each market has its own thing

going on, said Meddaugh, and wewant to encourage people to visiteach individual market and its webpage.

CCE will be providing coordination, technical assistance and education tothe consumers and the public inorder to help stabilize markets andhopefully find other locations whereadditional farmers markets can bedeveloped.

They also hope to initiate a farmersmarket nutrition program, make itpossible for seniors and others to usecoupons and redemptions, have deli-cious recipe demos at the marketsalong with fun and engaging activi-ties for children, an education classon composting and most important-ly, talk about why eating healthy andsupporting farmers markets is soessential to the community and thecounty.

  • STORY AND PHOTOSBY AUTUMN SCHANIL

At first my nursery was treesand shrubs and roses andornamental grasses andperennial flowers, said TrinaPilonero, owner of Silver HeightsFarm in Jeffersonville, but they didntreally speak to me. One of the thingsthat did speak to me, was tomatoes.

To the dismay of many, Pilonero hasrecently retired from her work at Sil-ver Heights Farm this year.

Pilonero grew up with parents whosaved seeds from their tomatoes andother vegetables, which you cant dowith todays hybrid plants becausethe seeds are often sterile or dontreproduce true to the parent plant.

    Whats the biggest difference? Thetaste.

A real tomato, grown from genera-

tions of tomatoes, said Pilonero, hasan unbelievable flavor, its juicy and adeep beautiful red.

My mother was a horrible cook butshe was excellent at canning things, laughed Pilonero. When you learnhow to can a tomato, a good tomato, you cant ruin its flavor. I have memo-ries of bad cooking, but good flavorsof tomato.

Unsatisfied with the tomatoes shewas finding at the stores and varioushome markets, Pilonero decided totry her hand at growing 50 varieties ofopen pollinated, short-seasonedtomatoes to see how productive theywould be here, beginning what wouldsoon become Silver Heights Farm.

The tomato plants that she didntput in the garden, she put at the endof the driveway with a little cigar box

People came and I dont believethat anyone ever robbed me, saidPilonero. The plants disappearedand there was always something inthe cigar box, so that was nice.

The first year was so successful thatPilonero decided to grow nearly 75different varieties of tomato plantsthe following year.

Thats not the only thing she had herhands in; she also helped get farmersmarkets started and on the move inSullivan County with the help of Cor-nell Cooperative Extension.

Its a struggle to be a farmer and itsa harder struggle when you are faraway from major markets like theones in New York City, explainedPilonero, but farmers markets meanthe farmer doesnt actually have topay a middleman in order to sell hisproduct.

One of the first markets to get start-ed? The Liberty Farmers Market in1996.

Not only was it exciting to get farm-

ers markets started in the area, but italso gave Pilonero another outlet tosell her plants.

I stood at my market stand and Ibegged people to buy my plants, laughed Pilonero, in which I wanted$2.00 per plant. People bought themeventually. The next year, they stoodin line for my plants.

The plants provided fruit not justfor a week but for a long growing sea-son and they had the flavor that peo-ple remembered from when theywere younger.

After that, Pilonero decided to addmore: peppers, eggplants, lettuce, other vegetables, herbs and someflowers. She made sure she kept allthe plants open-pollinated, meaningseeds that breed true or self-polli-nate and will produce plants that arepractically identical to the parentplant.

To me, one of the things that wasdistressing to see was that peoplewere and are losing the knowledge ofhow to do things that one or two gen-erations ago, they did as a matter ofcourse, said Pilonero, things thatwere a necessary part of living. AfterWWII when hybrids were introducedpeople thought it was great and easy,

but what they didnt realize, was thatyou couldnt save the seeds.

So Ive had a mission to preservethe genetic diversity of our vegetablesand to educate people on how to saveand regrow seeds. We grow good gar-deners.

Pilonero, for the past several years, grows about 2,000 open-pollinatedvarieties of vegetables, herbs andflowers. A massive number, especiallyin comparison to the low number of

three or four varieties of vegetablesnormally found at a store in springjust before planting season.

With so much happening at SilverHeights Farm, Pilonero worked out adeal with Gorzynski Ornery Farm inNarrowsburg, eventually moving hernursery there from 2005-2015. Herbusiness tripled within the first year.

She also began selling her plantsand products at the Union SquareFarmers Market in New York City.

Sadly, last fall was her last season, both with Gorzynski Farm and the

Union Square market. Many who have come to love

Pilonero and frequent Silver HeightsFarm annually, are forlorn as her timeto retire grows ever closer. Her officiallast day and the last day of SilverHeights Farm was Saturday, June 4.

So what does the future hold for Sil-ver Heights Farm and Pilonero?

Silver Heights Farm will be takenover by a friend of Piloneros whostudied at the nursery, learning aboutthe seeds and plants. It will be knownas Wild Yarrow Farm and will be locat-ed on New Turnpike Road in Cochec-ton, offering many of the same prod-ucts as Silver Heights Farm: organicheirloom vegetables, flowers, medici-nal and culinary herbs.

Pilonero and her husband have soldtheir house to a young couple and willbe moving to West Virginia.

I am really pleased that the housewill be staying agricultural, saidPilonero with a smile. This youngcouple is interested in food and grow-ing. Theyre thinking about a lot ofdifferent things that they can do here.

I really didnt want someone thatsees how this property can be sub-divided because once agriculturalland is gone, its gone.

Pilonero will be moving close to herdaughter, helping out on two differ-ent farms that she and her husbandhave: Stay A While Farm and ThreeFalls Farm. To Piloneros delight, herdaughters Stay A While Farm, special-izes in miniature mediterraneanwooly donkeys.

Its going to be hard to leave. Wecame here in September of 1990, soweve been here for almost 26 years. We have a lot of friends, a lot of rela-tionships with good people.

The gift of life for Bryce

Neversink youth, 8, gets heart tra

    BY JEANNE SAGER

    NEVERSINK The

    Tues-

    day night when life

    changed

    for the Rogerson fa

    mily was

    just like any other.

    With a planned tw

    o-hour

    delay for the T

    ri-Valley

    School District the

    next day,

    8-year-old Bryce an

    d 5-year-

    old Bryan had bee

    n given a

pass to stay up late a

    nd watch

    a movie together.

    Sixteen-

    year-old Emily w

    as doing

    what teenagers d

    o on a

    school night. Dad

    Brian was

    on a hunting trip in

    Alabama,

    so mom Nicole was

    snuggling

    in bed, watching T

    V by her-

    self. And then

    the phone rang.

    It was a pediatri

    c nurse

    familiar with littl

    e Bryces

    congenital heart c

    ondition.

    After nearly three

    years on

    the transplant list, t

    here was

    a heart waiting for B

    ryce.

    I said Are you k

    idding

    me? Nicole reca

    lls. I was

    literally skipping

    up and

    down the hallway!

It was a call the Ro

    gersons

    werent sure wo

    uld ever

    come. Bryce was

    diagnosed

    with hypoplastic

    left heart

    syndrome (HLHS)

    before he

    was even born, afte

    r a routine

    ultrasound at 18

    weeks

    picked up an

    anomaly.

    HLHS a syndrom

    e in which

the left side of a ch

    ild's heart

    was underdevelope

    d is one

    of the three most

    common

    heart issues a child

    can be

    born with, but it ca

    n be fatal

    if left untreated.

    To increase the

    Bryces

    chances, Nicole un

    derwent

    in utero surgery a

    t just 26

    weeks pregnant to o

    pen up a

    hole in his heart

    to allow

    blood to flow prop

    erly and

    help him develop

    in the

    womb. Ten days aft

    er he was

    born in February 20

    05, Bryce

    underwent his fir

    st open

    heart surgery. At 8 m

    onths, he

    had another, and in

    October

    of 2008, a third o

    pen heart

    surgery.

    But in 2010 came

    a devas-

    tating diagnosis. B

    ryce had

    developed plastic br

    onchitis,

    a condition of the lu

    ngs most

    common in cysti

    c fibrosis

    patients. Rubbery

    chunks of

    mucus had begun

    develop-

    ing in his lungs, m

    aking him

    struggle to breathe

    . Although

    the issue presents its

    elf in the

    lungs, doctors put

    the blame

    on his heart, which

    pumps

    oxygenated blood

    to the

    lungs. By 2011,

    doctors told the

    Rogersons their be

    st choice

    would be to put Br

    yce on the

    transplant list for

    a heart. A

    new heart, they to

    ld them,

    would take pressur

    e off the

    lungs and hopefu

    lly allow

    them to heal thems

    elves.

    On March 25, 2011

    , Bryce

    was added to the t

    ransplant

    list with whats know

    n as 1B

    status, the second

    from the

    top. At the time, do

    ctors told

    the Rogersons th

    at listing

    him at 1A the hig

    hest and

    most needy status

    would

    require Bryce to wai

    t in a hos-

    pital for a heart to

    be found.

    But with Bryce abl

    e to take

    his medication at h

    ome, the

    Rogersons opted to

    keep him

    in Neversink, to all

    ow him to

    continue attendin

    g school

    and be with his fam

    ily.

    They were told i

    t would

    take six months to

    a year to

    find him a heart.

    On June 25, 2013

    , more

    than two years late

    r, his heart

    hadnt come. The R

    ogersons

    moved their son up

    to 1A sta-

tus, the top of the t

    ransplant

    waiting list.

    At that time, doct

    ors had

    changed their mind

    and said

    Bryce could stay h

    ome and

    wait. They told the R

    ogersons

    it would probably b

    e a month

    or two until a he

    art was

    found. It was alm

    ost seven months

    until the call came.

    That was January

    14, the

    night Nicole called a

    friend to

    watch Bryan and pa

    cked her

    other two kids into

    the car to

    fly over the roads to

    Morgan

    Stanley Childrens H

    ospital at

    Columbia Presbyt

    erian in

    New York City. Bryc

    e was cry-

    ing, Nicole recalls

    , but his

    biggest worry was

    how am I

    going to turn in m

    y home-

    work? I told h

    im your teacher

    isnt going to wor

    ry about

    your writing assign

    ment.

    Husband Brian h

    ad just

    arrived in Alabama

    for his

    hunting trip and cou

    ldnt find

    a flight north, so he

    rented a

    car in Montgom

    ery and

    drove straight thr

    ough the

    night to Atlanta, Ge

    orgia, for

    the earliest f

    light to

    LaGuardia, a 6 a.m

    . that he

    hoped would get him

    there in

    time to see his

    little boy

    before he went into

    surgery.
