The New York State Bar Association has been fighting against the Governor of New York State’s proposed State 2017-18 budget which includes a $ 50 increase in attorneys’ Biennial Registration Fee as a means to pay, in part, for the increased funding of indigent criminal defense services. While one of the NYSBA’s legislative priorities has long been full government funding of indigent criminal defense services, President Claire P. Gutekunst argues, “providing indigent criminal defense is a constitutional mandate. It is a state obligation and a societal responsibility, which should be paid from the General Fund, not by a surcharge on lawyers.” The NYSBA asks for the assistance of every attorney in New York who similarly opposes the fee increase. Please voice your opposition in writing to your legislative representatives and the governor. Call NYSBA (518) 463-3200 or contact the president for electronic submission: [email protected].
