Agenda

• About Locatrix• Why IoT Location? Why MNO IoT?• IoT Location Centre– IoT Positioning methods– VAS delivery + successes

• Summary

Locatrix Communications• Queensland-based developer of

telecom industry solutions– Customer care, consumer services

+ more• Founded in 2003• Successful in commercialising

location-based solutions for mobile networks– Also mobile apps, web

development • Successful projects in Australia &

internationally

IoT Location Control Centre• Initial version developed & launched in

2014– Locatrix-owned solution & IP– Foundation customer (& sales channel) is

Telstra• Provides network-derived location for

Telstra’s machine-to-machine (M2M) IoT Customers– Tightly integrated with Telstra’s IoT

provisioning platform• Cloud-based / SaaS delivery model

– Commercial model based on active number devices

– Derives position information directly from Telstra network elements (GMLC + middleware)

Location Control Centre @ Telstra

• Successful commercial deployment• Hosted & supported by Locatrix• Gaining traction with Telstra

enterprise IoT customers• Refer video for full demonstration

Uses of Location Control Centre• Primarily indoor connected devices:

– Smart Utility Meters• Installation location verification• Post-installation movement alerts• Network diagnostics (fault location)• Telstra example: Origin

– Smart Kiosks / EFTPOS• Installation verification, management• Reporting on retail location effectiveness• Telstra examples: MyKi, Travelex

– In-home Medical equipment tracking• Where device GPS is not a viable solution

Commercialisation Challenges

• Telstra is one of a few homogenous networks– Wholly Ericsson network equipment– Location infrastructure within network is 1st class

• Feedback from International IoT MNOs– Much lower revenue per device than Australia– Utilise 3rd-party RANs (Roaming and/MVNO)

• We needed a device positioning solution that is– low-cost (both cost and signaling traffic-overhead)– network independent (roaming friendly, unlike GMLC)– Wholly cloud-deliverable (Capex-free for IoT MNOs)

Network Independent IoT Location Pilot

• Sponsored by a customer MNO– Explores alternative data sources generated by 3G/4G data networks

• e.g. SGSN + HLR log records, data session end/start records• Secure log extraction from MNO network elements• Avoid in-network signaling (e.g. SS7/SIGRTRAN) if possible

– Determine algorithms for identification & extraction of network cell data from each logged record

– Implement a pseudo-GMLC solution that implements & determines device serving cell ID

– Determine, evaluate & integrate any required 3rd party information (Dell databases, geospatial/map services)

– Display & report position using a web-based application

IoT Location PoC Status• Driven by commercial interest from European MNO

– Pan-European IoT business division– Home radio network, plus network roaming agreements elsewhere

• Data from 3 major customers made available– Energy utilities + medical device management– Wholly using roaming (i.e. non-home) networks

• Progress milestones– Commenced PoC development in June 2016– PoC demonstrations in August & September– Customer PoC presentations scheduled for October 2016– Designed Architecture for final solution

Summary

• Interesting and evolving space– IoT + Location

• GMLC OEMs are challenging commercially– Working with Telestax GMLC (v1.0.0 is now GA)!

• Questions?• Thank You!
