StudentRecitals2020–2021ProceduresandRestrictionsSpecifictoCOVID-19
DuetorisksassociatedwiththeCOVID-19virusspecificproceduresareinplaceforstudentrecitalsintheForbesCenterthroughtheFallof2020anduntilriskstostudents,faculty,staffandguestsaremitigatedthroughthedevelopmentanddistributionofavaccineorbyreducedprevalenceofthevirusinthecommunity.JMUandtheForbesCenterwillcontinuetoadjustproceduresbasedonguidancefromtheCDCandtheCommonwealthofVirginiawhichmayincreaseordecreaserestrictionsplacedonrecitals.CurrentproceduresfollowguidanceundertheGovernorofVirginia’sexecutiveorder67,EO-67,whichprovidesspecificproceduresfortheoperationofperformingartscentersandinstitutionsofhighereducation.Scheduling-RecitalswillbeconductedasusualonFridays,SaturdaysandSundaysduringtheFallandSpringsemesters.TimeslotsforrecitalshavebeencreatedtoallocatetimetocleantheRecitalHallandsupportspacesbetweenrecitals.Productionstaff–Inordertoaccommodatephysicaldistancingandforthesafetyofstudentsandstaffmembersonlyoneproductionemployeewillbepresentforarehearsalandperformance.InthecaseofaDMArecital,TomCarrwillalsobepresenttoconducttherecording.Wheneverpossiblethesameemployeewillconductboththerehearsalandtheperformance.Guests–ThemaximumattendanceintheseatingareaoftheRecitalHallis12people.The12-personlimitincludesthestudent’sprofessor,familymembers,guests,andvideographerorothersupportingindividuals.Twoseatswillbeallocatedtofacultyandtenseatswillbereservedforyourguests.
• Recitalsarestillfreebutallguestsmustreserveaticketinadvance.SpecificproceduresforsecuringatickethavebeenissuedbytheForbesCenterBoxOffice.SeeSeatingonpage7
• Guestsandotherindividualsattendingrecitalsarerequiredtowearamaskatalltimesandfollow
physicaldistancingrequirements.• DuetohowtheForbesCenterwillmanageseatingintheHallallguestswillsit10feetapart
regardlessofthelivingarrangementoftheguests.• Duetothedecreasedaudiencecapacitytheaudiencewillonlybeseated15minutespriortothe
startoftherecital.Ushers–DuetothecapacitylimitintheRecitalHallrecitalistsperformingundertheseguidelinesarenotrequiredtoprovideushers.
• Ifrestrictionsaroundaudiencecapacityandphysicaldistancingdecreaseandlargeraudiencesareallowedstudentswillberequiredtoprovideushersatthattime.
Pianos-Apianowillbepresentonstageforallrehearsalsandperformances.Ifastudentdoesnotrequiretheuseofapianothepianowillbestoredinonecornerofthestage.

Pageturners–Duetotheneedtomaintainphysicaldistancesbetweenindividualspageturnersmaynotbeused.Harpsichord–Duetotheproceduresformovingthemanualharpsichordswhichrequirecloseproximitybetweenindividualsthemanualharpsichordsmaynotbeusedforrecitals.Studentsmayarrangetousetheelectricharpsichordifneeded.Livestreaming/Recording–Studentsarewelcometorecordorlivestreamtheirrecitalsforfriendsandfamilies.Ifarecitalistcontractsanindividualtoprovidearecordingorstreamtheirrecitaltheindividualmustsecureatickettotherecital.LengthandIntermission–Asusualastudenthas60minutestocompletetheirentireperformanceincludingbows.Intermissionswillnolongerbeallowedinaprogrambutastudentmayincorporateshortbreaksduringwhichtheirguestswillremainseated.Programs–Printedprogramswillnotbeusedthisyear.RecitalistswillpreparetheirprogramandprogramnotesasusualandtheSOMwillposttheprogramonlinewhereguestscanaccessit.LinkstotheprogramwillbeavailablewhenguestsreservetheirseatandwhentheyentertheRecitalHall.Safetyprecautions–
Priortoarehearsalandarecitalperformance:
• Electrostaticfoggingunitswillbeusedtospreaddisinfectantthroughtheseatingarea.
• AlldoorhandlesandtouchpointsondoorsinteriorandexteriordoorstotheRecitalHallwillbewipeddownwithasterilizingsolution.
• Thebackstagetablewillbesprayedwithasterilizingsolutionandallowedtodry.
• Ifapianoistobeusedthekeyswillbewipedwithhydrogenperoxide.
• Thepianobenchseatandbenchadjustmentknobsorhandleswillbewipedwithasterilizingsolution.
• Onlyhardsurfacedplasticchairsorwoodstoolswillbeusedbythestudentsandproductioncrewandwillbesprayedwithasterilizingsolutionandallowedtodry.
• Musicstandswillbesprayedwithasterilizingsolutionandallowedtodry.
• Ifastudentprovidespropstheyareresponsibleforhandlingthepropsthemselvesandthe
propsmaynotbestoredintheRecitalHallbetweentherehearsalandtheperformance.
• Noguestsareallowedbackstageduringarehearsaloraperformanceregardlessoftheirintent,i.e.astudentmaynotbringafriendtohelpthemmoveprops.

o PercussionstudentsmayrecruitotherstudentstohelpmoveinstrumentstoandfromtheHallbuttheotherstudentsmustleaveoncetheinstrumentsareintheHall.
Duringaperformance:Distancingandstagemovements:
• Allperformersmustremain10’fromeachotherwhileonstage.TheProductionstaffwillprovidemarksonthestagewhereindividualsmuststandorsit.Examplesfordifferentset-upsarelistedatthe
o Physicaldistancingmustbefollowedduringbows.
• Performers,accompanistsandcrewmustmaintainsixfeetofdistancebetweeneachother
whilebackstage.
• Ifaperformerhasmultipleaccompanyingperformerstheymayberequiredtousethestageleftentranceforsomeindividualstoaccommodatedistancing.Inthiscasetheindividualsenteringandexitingstageleftmustopenandclosethestagedoorthemselves.
• Allchairs,musicstandsandotherequipmentusedduringtherecitalmustremainonstage

• Astudentwhousesmultipleinstrumentsmayexchangetheirinstrumentbackstage.
• Productionemployeeswillnotmoveequipmentincludingthepianoduringtherecital.Studentsutilizingapianoarerequiredtoselectonepositiononstageforthepiano.
o Studentsmaymovechairsandmusicstandsonstagebythemselvesorwiththeir
accompanyingperformers,howevertheymaynotrecruitoutsideindividualstohelpthemmoveitems.
o Studentsmaynotmovethepiano.
o Pianostickheightsmayonlybeadjustedduringarecitalbythepianist.
• Attheconclusionoftheperformancethestudentmustremovealloftheirpersonalmaterialsuchassheetmusicandpropsfromthestagethemselves.
Masks:
• Allindividualsincludingrecitalists,accompanistsandproductionemployeesmustwearamaskwhilebackstage.Aperformer’smaskmayberemovedimmediatelypriortoenteringthestageandreplaceduponexitingatthecompletionoftheirbows.Ifarecitalistexitsthestageforabreakshorterthan5minutestheydonothavetoputtheirmaskonwhilebackstagebuttheymustremain10feetfromanyindividualsbackstage.Anaccompanying

performerwhoisnotperforminginapiecemustplacetheirmaskbackonwhilewaitingtoreenterthestageforalaterpiece.

Dressingrooms:
• Dressingroomswillhavealltouchpointsincludingdoors,lightswitches,andcounterssprayedwithasterilizingsolutionbeforeuse.
• Dressingroom#1whichhasaninternalbathroomwillnotbeusedforrecitals.
• Dressingrooms#2and#3willberotatedbetweenrecitalistsonthesamedaytoensure
thatthedressingroomhasadditionaltimetoturnovertheair.Betweenrecitalsonthesamedaythedressingroomnotinusewillhaveitsdoorproppedopentoincreaseairturnover.
• Dressingroomsarerestrictedtotherecitalistonly,accompanyingperformersshould
arrivedressedfortheperformance. Greenroom:
• DMArecitalistsmayutilizethegreenroomasusual.Thepianokeys,tableandotherhardsurfaceswillbecleanedbetweenrecitals.
Lecturerecitals:
• Lecturerecitalswillfollowexistingprocedures.Therecitalistwillhavetheuseofapodiummicrophoneoralapelmicrophonewhichwillbesterilizedbeforeandafteruse.

SchedulingofRecitals
Degree-requiredDMA,MM,andSeniorFullandHalfRecitalsareeligibletobescheduledintheForbesCenterRecitalHall.JuniorHalfRecitalswillbescheduledforAnthony-Seeger.SchedulingwilltakeplacewithMs.Macomber.TheSOMusescomputer-generatedlotterysystemtodeterminetheorderinwhichastudentmayselecttheirrecital.StudentsdonotneedtomeetwithMs.Macomberinperson,theycansendanemailwiththeirdatechoicesortheycancallMs.Macomber.Priortoschedulingyourrecital,youmustattendoneofthreeWebExStudentRecitalOrientationswiththeForbesCenterstaff.Ifyouarenotrecordedasanattendee,youwillnotbepermittedtosignupforarecitalslot.Halfrecitalistsmusthaveapartner.IfyoudonothaveapartnerletMs.Macomberknowandshewillmatchyouwithsomeone.
SchedulingofRehearsals
Onefullrecitalortwojointhalfrecitalswillreceiveone90-minuterehearsal.RehearsalslotsareofferedeachweekbaseduponthenumberofStudentRecitalsandtheotherdemandsoftheproductioncalendaronthatparticularweek.PleasecontactMs.Macombertoscheduleyourrehearsal.Rehearsalslotsfortheentireacademicyearwillbeavailableforschedulingoneweekafterrecitalschedulingcloses.Forthebestchanceofobtainingyouridealrehearsaltime,contactMs.Macomberearly.PleasedonotcontacttheForbesProductionOfficetoscheduleyourrehearsal;youwillbedirectedtotheSchoolofMusic.
Cancellations
Duetothehighdemandplacedonourlimitedresources,itisexpectedthatallStudentRecitalstakeplaceonthedayandtimeoriginallyscheduledwithMs.Macomber.Ifyouandyourappliedinstructordecidethatacancellationisnecessary,youmustcontacttheForbesProductionofficeimmediately.Inallcases,exceptthoseofextremehardship(e.g.debilitatingillness)asidentifiedbytheSchoolofMusic,youwillnotbepermittedtorescheduleintheRecitalHallwithinthesameacademicyear.AsarrangedwiththeSOMadministration,youwillbepermittedtoutilizeotherSchoolofMusicvenuesorchoosetopostponeyourrecitaluntilthefollowingacademicyearinordertoperformintheRecitalHall.PleasedonotcontacttheForbesProductionOfficetoreschedule;youwillbedirectedtotheSchoolofMusic.Theswappingofrecitalslotsisnotpermitted.

RecitalHallRules
Seating:TherearenoticketsandnochargeforStudentRecitals.Onlycrewmembers,performers,ushers,andotherauthorizedpersonnelarepermittedbackstage,onstage,andintheDressingRooms.Friendsandfamilynotdirectlyinvolvedintheperformancearenotpermitted.SeatingisGeneralAdmission.Duetodistancingrequirementsnomorethan12peopleareallowedintheRecitalHallseatingarea.StudentRecitalsarestillfreebutguestsmustreservetheirspotinadvance.StudentRecitalTicketPolicyAnyRecitalperformance,heldintheForbesCenterforthePerformingArts,willrequireattendeestoreserveaticket.

Acoustics:Theacousticsoftheroomwillbeadjustedduringyourrehearsalandthesamesettingswillbeusedforyourperformance.SoundReinforcement:Soundreinforcementisnotavailableforstudentrecitals.SoundplaybackmustreceiveapprovalfromtheForbesProductionOfficepriortoyourrehearsaltoensuretherequiredequipmentisavailable.Projections:Videoprojectionsupportisprovidedforcurriculum-requiredlecture-recitalswithPowerPointonly.ForbesCenterequipmentwillnotbeavailableforotherusesincludingsupertitles,photos,etc…..Lighting:Lightingwillconsistofano-colorwashofthestage.Houselightsremainataprogram-readinglevel.

LengthofPerformance
Yourrecital(soloorjointhalf)isexpectedtocompletewithin60minutesofyourscheduledrecitalstarttime.Thisincludesanytransitions,introductionsandpauses.EncoreperformancesarenotpermittedatStudentRecitals.
• Halfrecitalistsareexpectedtohaveapartnerandbothrecitalistsmustperformwithinthe60minutesallowedfortherecital.Ifonepartnercancelstheirrecitalorcannotperformforanyreasontheremainingrecitalistmustcompletetheirperformancewithin30minutes.
Attheendoftheperformancetherecitalistmayreturntothestageforasmanybowsasheorshedesires.Thecrewmemberopeningthestagedoorwillconfirm,visuallyorverbally,withtherecitalistwhentherecitalistdoesnotwanttobowfurther.Intheinterestofaudiencesafety,foraudiencemembersexitingtheHall,thehouselightswillbebroughtupifthestagemanagerhearstheapplausediminishing.
AuthorizedRecordingOpportunities
OfficialForbesaudiorecordingsareonlyavailableforDMArecitals;allotherrecordingsaretheresponsibilityofthestudent.NoForbesCenterequipmentisavailableforrecording,andanyequipmentbroughtinforsuchpurposesmustconformtothesafetyguidelinesasdirectedbythestagemanager.Oneaudiorecordingandonevideorecordingorlivestreamarepermittedforeachstudentrecital.Recitalistsareresponsibleforabidingbycopyrightlawsregardingthesharinganddistributionofanymusictheychoosetoperform.AnytripodsmustbeclearofallwalkwaysinaccordancewiththeFireMarshalandshouldbesetupatthecenterdeskbelowtheterraceseatingarea.Ifyouaresharingahalfrecital,youmayonlyhaveonecameraforbothofyou.Stillphotographyisnotpermittedatyourrecitalorrehearsal.Livestreamingisallowedbutyoumayonlyhaveonestreamingdeviceandoneoperator.Theoperatormusthaveatickettotherecital.
PianoUse
Therearefour9-footSteinwayConcertDpianosthatservetheneedsofallperformancesheldintheForbesCenterConcertHallandRecitalHall,includingstudentrecitals.Studentrecitalistsarenotgivenachoiceofpiano;however,youwillbeprovidedthesamepianoatbothyourdressrehearsalandyourrecital.Ifyouarenotusingapianoinyourrecitalapianowillstillbeonstagebutitwillbeplacedinacorner.

PreparedPianoandOtherNon-traditionalTechniquesApreparedpianoisapianothathasbeenmodifiedinsomefashion,i.e.anobjectplacedonthestrings.Non-traditionaltechniquesincludeanyformofinteractingwiththepianootherthanfingerstouchingthekeys.Approvaltouseapianoinapreparedmannermustbesecuredfromthepianotechnicianatleastfourweekspriortoyourrecital.
1. AllstructuralchangestoanypianomustbesupervisedorperformedbytheSchoolofMusic’spianotechnician.Thisincludesremovingthelidorothercasepartsandattachinganythingtostringsorsoundboardtomodifythesound.

ForeignObjects.Insomecases,literaturecallsfortheinsertionofscrewsormutesbetweenpianostrings.Inextremecases,anolderpianooutsideofourfourconcertgrandswillneedtobebroughtin.Again,amaterialsofterthanthestringmustbeused,suchasbrassoraluminum.Thepianotechnicianwillmakethefinaldecisiononacceptablematerials.
5. Extremevolume.Thereisafinelinetobedrawnbetweenpassionatemusicalexpressionandoutrightbangingonapiano.Pleaseusegoodjudgmentwhenplayingaboveaforte.Harshplayingisdamagingandwillnotbetolerated.
