Structure and Classification of Bone/ Organization of the

Skeleton

Structure and Classification of Bone

•Tendons

•Movement

• Cartilage and bone support the rest of the body

• Cartilage– Matrix is a firm gel– Cells called chondrocytes– Cells found in lacunae– Three types: hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage

Supporting connective tissues

Bone shapes

• Long• Flat• Short• Irregular• Sesamoid• Sutural

• Compact bone (dense)– Dense and forms the surface of bones – Extremely hard

• Spongy bone (cancellous)– low density and strength– fills the inner cavity of long bones – contains red bone marrow where the

production of blood cellular components (known as hematopoiesis) takes place

Bone structure = two types of bone

Organization of the Skeleton

Major Divisions• Axial portion (green)

– Head– Neck– Trunk

• Appendicular portion (tan)– Arms– Legs
