Here are some interesting ideas, products and trending topics from the #SmartCitiesWeekDC that took place on

Sept 15-17, 2015 in Washington, D.C.

1. #Citizen engagement is a trending topic in #egovernment and #technology space. Denmark's is one of the

leaders in citizen engagement and its e-government strategy: The Digital Road to Future Prosperity 2011-2015,

has even "challenged government agencies to use new technologies to step up from providing information and

services, to creating genuine engagement with citizens."

Citizen Engagement Ina Corydon, Deputy CEO of the Municipality of Copenhagen,

Denmark, explains the role of city government in supporting Denmark's national

digitisation strategy. Denmark's latest e-government strategy, 'Joint Public Digital

Strategy: The Digital Road to Future Prosperity 2011-2015' released in August 2011,

challenged government agencies to use new technologies to step up from providing information and

services, to creating genuine engagement with citizens.

2. #Energy & #smartcity initiatives are a hot topic... Denmark has also been successful in implementing many

#smartcity projects especially in the #energy sector. #Copenhagen, in particular, aspires to be the first #carbon

neutral capital by 2025. With this in mind, the municipal government has deployed various #LED lighting systems

that are a backbone for network capabilities and wireless communication. For instance, a series of 'green wave'

lights were installed in bike lanes and help to direct manage cyclists and traffic patterns. #LED lights are not only

used as energy saving mechanism, but also for sensor installations. These sensors collect data on traffic patterns,

road conditions, parking, emergency situations, etc. They are very useful in managing city life.

Copenhagen Lighting the Way to Greener, More Efficient Cities

COPENHAGEN - On a busy road in the center of town here, a string of green lights

embedded in the bike path - the "Green Wave" - flashes on, helping cyclists avoid

red traffic lights. On a main artery into the city, truck drivers can see on

smartphones when the next light will change.

It is anticipated that 10,000 more 'intelligent LED lights' will be installed in Copenhagen by @DKCleantechHub.

These lights will help to reduce energy costs by 70% and decrease the carbon emissions in the city. Better lighting

will also reduce crime rates and promote safe communities.

29 April 2015 - Cleantech Copenhagen will install 10,000 LED street lights, making

Copenhagen one of the first cities in the world to use intelligent street lighting. New

energy efficient LED street lights will soon illuminate the streets of Copenhagen,

reducing energy costs by up to 70 percent and carbon emissions accordingly.

3.#Connectivity ... a smart city foundation is based on connectivity and wireless capabilities.. I came across a

consortium of three companies - @Qualcomm, @Intersection and @@civiqscapes that recently launched a really

exciting product, #LinkNYC. It is essentially a communications network in a standalone terminal that provides

#inter-connectivity, leverages #technology to foster citizen engagement and deliver services to the public.

#LinkNYC terminals will provide free #wifi, #phone services, touch style #dashboard to access city services, cell

phone charging station, and will be a source for public service announcement and #smart advertising. This will

come at no cost to the taxpayer but will be funded through media and advertising revenue. Creative, right?

Apparently, the first product roll-out is scheduled by the end of 2015 in New York City, and I am really hoping to

see a 'LinkDC' sometime in the near future!

4.)#Digitalization... lots of great stuff happening in this area, particularly in #Barcelona. The municipal

government worked with #Cisco to revitalize the city. About 800 wireless access points were installed on

lampposts, providing wifi coverage throughout the city. People are able to find parking spaces and even check

the air quality using their smartphones! @Cisco gave a very interesting presentation on the digital #innovation,

smart city development, and the continued progress in #IoE and #IoT in Barcelona.
