STORIES & PORTFOLIOS

The horses of the revolutionWalter Rothwell (UK)

1st place

At the Pyramids of Giza many people depend on tourism for their livelihoods, the animals that work for them depend on it for their very lives. After the egyptian revolution of 2011 tourism collapsed in most parts of the country, in Giza, this had devastating consequences for the horse and camel owners, their families and their livestock. Working directly with tourists, giving them rides around the Pyramids, gave these men a relatively high income compared with many egyptians and the number of animals swelled. Stables were everywhere in the local town and competition was intense. Then, after years of growth, nothing. The Cruise ships sailed past egypt, the tour companies stayed away, excursions from the Red Sea resorts dried up, at the Pyramids only the locals and the dust remained, leaving hundreds of owners and thousands of animals with no livelihood. Ask any parent to make the choice between feeding their children or their animals.

Walter RothwellAfter finishing a Photography higher national Diploma at bournemouth and Poole college of art and design, I ran a gallery in London and freelanced for various companies, newspapers and magazines. I then spent a period travelling, living in europe and Asia working with nGo’s and undertaking personal projects. now back living in London, working on commissions and long term personal projects. I have exhibited in britain, europe and the USA and have work held in private collections and the collection of the bibliothèque nationale de France.

STORIES & PORTFOLIOS

Fisherman’s NightErvin Skalamera (Italy)

3rd place

Fishing is not just an exhausting job that requires commitment, strength and perseverance from a man. Fishing is an art full of charm. It tells the stories of men of the sea, shows their faces marked by the weather, it becomes attuned to their breaths, it speaks about a life that sinks roots into the sea where ancient gestures tell the stories of times gone by... and in the silence of the night, where the waves are shot through with the lights of the fishing boats, every time a miracle materialises. The net is raised up to the boat, the eyes light up joy is repeated in the small moments of an everyday life made up of simple things. Fishing is a passion: give a man a fish and you’ll feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you’ll feed him for a lifetime.

* * *

Ervin Skalameraervin Skalamera was born in Rijeka (Croatia) in 1959. As a boy he spent his summers in Mošćenička Draga, a small town on the Croatian coast. And there, watching and helping the local fishermen, he learned to appreciate their work and their commitment. his lens, capturing moments of intense poetry, becomes a silent witness to one of the most ancient activities in Kvarner bay, of which one day, maybe, only a memory in the stories of old fishermen shall remain. ervin began taking photographs in the early 1980s, producing numerous ethno-geographical and landscape accounts. his photographs received awards in national and international photography competitions.

* * *

Flipflops in the foundryZoltan Adrian (Hungary)

4th place

This iron foundry in Amarapura, Myanmar (formerly burma) is located in a residential neighborhood amidst sleepy family residences. Scrap metal is collected, selected and melted into drain grids and large woks. Several generations work together in the workshop where the furnace is the only machine (apart from cell phones) and all steps of the work are done by hand.

Newroz in Turkish KurdistanMarta Zaccaron (Italy)

7th place

newroz refers to the celebration of the traditional Persian new year holiday. The festival of newroz is celebrated throughout the countries of the Middle east, Caucasus, and Central Asia. newroz is considered the most important festival in Kurdish culture, and is a time for entertainment such as games, dancing, family gatherings, preparation of special foods and the reading of poetry. on the eve of newroz, in southern and eastern Kurdistan, bonfires are lit. These fires symbolize the passing of the dark season, winter, and the arrival of spring, the season of light. The celebration coincides with the northward equinox which falls mainly on 21 March and the festival is held usually between 18 and 24 March. The festival currently has an important place in terms of Kurdish identity for the majority of Kurds. Following the persecution the Kurds suffered in Turkey, the revival of newroz celebration has become more intense and politicized and has also become a symbol of the Kurdish resurrection. In the past years in Turkey the Kurds had to struggle to celebrate newroz, and the celebration has led to violent oppression, leading to several deaths and mass arrests.

LangaAndrea Falcon (Italy)

8th place

At a first sight, from the outside, it is easy to compare a southafrican township to a favela, a slum, a bidonville or a baraccopoli. but it is wrong. A township is a city area where, during the years of apartheid, black and coloured people were forced to live. Although apartheid is over, townships still exist (the most famous and big one is Soweto, in Johannesburg) and are developing rapidly. Langa in xosa language means “Sun”. It is a relatively small township in Cape Town, but one of the oldest, placed in a plain at the bottom of the famous Table Mountain, established in 1927 and designated only to black workers ant their families.Walking the streets of Langa is a journey in the history of townships. There still are wooden shacks and dorms in bricks, but also new buildings under construction. In Langa are still very alive the signs of a not too distant and terrible past, difficulties of present life are evident, but there are also some signs for a better future.

Langa in lingua xosa significa “Sole”.

Sarajevo ScarsElisa Sturaro (Italy)

9th place

The first time I have been to Sarajevo I felt like a punch to the stomach. The walls were full of holes from war weapons. Until then the balkans conflict represented to me only a piece of contemporary history read in newspapers, even if it has taken place very close to where I lived.ever since that moment, the Sarajevo massacre has become true to me and I cannot refrain from checking those walls every time I go back there. Later I started to think how to translate into a photographic project that same violent emotion and I started taking pictures of those scars, many of them in different moments and neighborhoods. After a long period I attentively looked at those pictures and astonishingly they caused in me the same reaction, the same punch in the stomach that I felt the first time… I could not understand why at the beginning, but then I realized that a weapon hole in a wall cannot be an insignificant or abstract thing, that actually there is nothing more real and violent than such a scar as a memory of a massacre. And maybe they will have the same effect on someone else, as an indelible memory of an inflicted and endured cruelty. The images delineate a sort of imaginary path from the first one that is a clear statement from who has done what is shown in the subsequent images.

Rome, 26/27/28 April 2014. The faith of the pilgrims, incapable of laughing at itself, should doubt their authenticity. on 27 April 2014 a Mass of canonization for two Popes was held in St. Peter’s Square for the first time in the history of the Vatican. The ceremony was both formal and spectacular thanks to the presence of 800,000 pilgrims. The faithful came from all over Italy and the world and have come to Rome to celebrate the event at its eve and participate in the day of consecration. Little matter the weather conditions or inconvenience resulting from the crowd. My project aims to put emphasis on the surreal and improbable situations and the funny compromises to which all the faithful have adapted, whatever their origin. one of the most important spiritual events of the century that resizes the human criterion (all too human).

Roma, 26/27/28 Aprile 2014.

A street photography collection in which the light is the key to unveil the essence of an invisible city, where the ordinary street scenes change into magic under the effect of an extraordinary light. Florence becomes dark, a metaphor of the impossibility to absorb the history and the art in the frenzy, overexposed to thousands of tourists everyday; but at the same time candid and poetic: the daily life, the people, the actors, the humanity that flows on the streets. And the light, that constantly changes like all of us.

noicattaro (until 1862 called noja) is a city of about 25,000 people, about fifteen kilometers from bari, known to be an important center for the production and transformation of grapes. In the context of easter traditions in Puglia, the holy Week of noicattaro is renowned for the presence of the Crucifers in all the processions that wind through the city streets from Thursday to holy Saturday, giving to these rites a distinctly penitential character. but is on the holy Thursday evening that Crucifers take all their penitential dimension, when paraded all together in what is called the procession of the Crucifers, the first of four of noja Paschal Triduum. on Good Friday, in the late evening, takes place the procession of the dead Christ. In the early hours of holy Saturday takes place the Addolorata procession, while in the afternoon the Mysteries procession concludes the rites of the holy Week in noicattaro.

I took the photos of this portfolio in the time-span of a few months, in two cities that are very significant to me: Rome, where I was born, and Sydney, where I lived for several years. I was about to make important decisions for my future and these photos represent my search for raw emotions in the streets of large metropolitan cities, and my attempt to connect to those emotions through my intuitive, visceral response to them. Living in large cities there is an almost natural tendency to become involved only with one’s own issues and problems, which in turn increases the sense of isolation. These photos are the most immediate expression of the realization that all I could do was open up, look and recognize the people around me.

Psychiatric hospital Mombello. Roaming through empty and abandoned big rooms for some time, rooms that still bear the scars of the past and of the events that have been overcome, it’s an emotion. Traces of the past evoke the ghosts of ”lives lost” in those halls now bare: a chair here, a crucifix, a room with an empty bed, broken glass, photographs. Imagination evokes the people who have passed away with their suffering souls staring into an inner world to remember and/or daydream of a distant world.

ospedale Psichiatrico Mombello.

This is the first time that I participate in a contest by submitting a portfolio and the choice of pictures and theme has not been easy. I have decided to dedicate this first experience to the best trip I have ever had in terms of photography and life experience. What impressed me the most have been the colors, the people and their deep looks. This is the reason why my portfolio is about this theme: “colors and looks”. I hope you have the patience and, why not, the pleasure of observing my shots.

heterotopia is the concept of places and spaces that function in non-hegemonic conditions. These are spaces of otherness which are neither here nor there, that are simultaneously physical and mental. My intention is a play with subjective and intuitive juxtaposition of different spaces – those public and private, cultural and useful, family and social, leisure and work, internal and external, protected and open, urban and rural ones. by exploration and encounter, there are some spaces which define our knowledge of the world, some places which inform our understanding of who we are, and the landscapes that we could call home. In my works, i intend to accumulate the time by multiple exposure and create a parallel physical and mental space which becomes placeless. none of the images were digitally altered. eterotopia è il concetto di luoghi e spazi che funzionano in condizioni non-egemoniche.

Cuba: a country where all the resources - the few left due to the embargo and a stagnant economy - are streamlined. Food, welfare and education for all, high literacy to university on one hand, painfully complicated bureaucracy, central control and lack of freedom of expression on the other. The People in shorts and flip-flops who stopped waving Marx’s Capital long ago still watch movies on VhS (those who are lucky). “Working less, work for all “ translates to shifts of 4-5 hours on alternate weeks, where a job is covered by 4 people for a few CUC (tourist money) per month. Cubanos spend the rest of the time trying to grab extra cash to buy more food than the “rationed “ one. Cubans await for better times in the rocking chair on their crumbling porches, smoking cigars (and not the Cohiba or Romeo y Julieta - much loved by Winston Churchill ) . Some people go to the beach but not in the luxury resort of Cayos ( to which access is forbidden for Cubans) to drink “piña colada” or dancing in a garage. because the entrance to the fancy ballrooms is too pricy for them. Young women and men who blame the elders of having imposed an anachronistic revolution on them and a whole new generation who dreams of nike shoes, McDonald’s and a life in the contemporary nearby Miami. A country where everybody remains stuck in a dated dream, in a set from the 50’s.

WarMauro Vincenzi (Italy)

20th place

War. The lowest point in the history of the human kind and existence. Always such a strong topic, so absolute that it imprisons the human being and forces it to struggle between the desire for peace and its innate stupidity. And so many words been said, the many great people wh fought against a violent solution to problems, the many statements of good intent... I think... what can be produced by the different use of a finger. Yes, of a finger. It can pull the trigger of a gun and cause death, violence, pain, suffering. Finger can operate the button of a camera and produce art, accounts, beauty, memories. What potential does Man have at his disposal, in its very being, and how many times it is badly used... ha! If everyone used their fingers and their will to produce love, tolerance, wealth for everyone! I think... I think of selfishness and pride... and a finger can point at the horizon instead of pointing in accusation. To close this bitter inner reflection I use the help on the words of bob Dylan which I found written in a cemetery, on a monument to the fallen in the last tragic, big, War: “how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man? And how many times must the cannon balls fly before they’re forever banned. And how many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died. The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind... The story does not teach. Anything.

Guerra.

The idea was born after the shot that depicts the hands in the face of a black person. That person was an immigrant I met on a train to naples who wasn’t in compliance with the residence permit and who preferred to stay anonymous. With this person I laughed and I even cried at the end. From here the idea of photographing people who don’t want to show their faces. I think that the hands depict exactly: gender, age and social status, and therefore the people themselves.

While walking in my city, Torino, my eyes had been attracted by those light-boxes that are standing on the roads, near bus stops and public squares, boxes that are used for commercial advertisements to be “thrown” at people. Their light contains messages and images. My project is based on them. Probably due to the bad economical situation, or maybe only because they stuck in my mind, I have noticed that a lot of the light-boxes were empty. no advertising, no images, just a white light, fixed into a metallic frame and integrated in the urban landscape. This sense of loneliness and their character brought to me the idea of making a kind of close-up of these ”urban blanks”. Developing and executing my idea, the short relationship with those “subjects” made me look in other directions. Looking at those empty ligh-boxes was the key to catch the ”full” of the urban landscapes. The fixity of the ”urban blanks”, apparently endless, highlights the mobility and the dynamic development of the city with the continuous spirit of changing and reinventing itself. Looking at the ”Urban blanks” it’s an interesting way to think such urban landscapes in a different way and establish with them a new visual relationship.

The fish market in Catania. At the doors of Catania, crossing the walls of Charles V and arriving in Dome Square you can see a fountain that conceals a lower level where for fishermen held the famous fish market of the city, called “a Piscaria .” The market takes place mostly outdoors in a large square and then stretches into an inner part where it shines once more in a space colonized by stalls from the red tent. We soon finds ourself in a street theater with consummate actors who had been playing the same part for years always with great vehemence. Smells, colors and shouts that rise above the senses. everything seems to always be the same but in reality evry time feels like the first again. on every corner there are those who rinse, cut and clean once more and the sound of knives flying on the counters of wood or marble marks the rhythm of the day. Fish of all kinds is offered on every corner with loud voice, with a sound that is reminiscent of the Arab markets in the midst of the prominent confusion, in an organized chaos.

Akwasidae: the immutability of the Ashanti traditionDaniele Bellucci (Italy)

27th place

In Kumasi, the capital of the historical region Ashanti in the heart of Ghana, each month has a duration of 42 days. At the beginning of every month - called Akwasidae or Adae- a ceremony is organised and carried out with pride and perseverance by its inhabitants to pay tribute to the Ashanti king. The festival is a time of sharing and peace for the community. The festival has the inner courtyards of the Royal Palace as its background and attracts hundreds of people who, for the big event, usually wear traditional costumes, black and white tunics and are happy to bring gifts to the king osei Agyeman Prempeh II. beside the king on each side sit the elders, the councelors and the royal linguist - who is holding the symbols of power coated with gold. While the courtiers offer their gifts, storytellers recite the dynastic history of the Ashanti kings. The atmosphere becomes more and more mystic and magic: drummers and trumpets of ivory set the rythm of the celebration, storytellers praise the king and say proverbs, while eccentric and sensual dancers enchant with their movements and the charm of the fabrics that cover their flashy bodies. The Queen Mother joins the party accompanied by her court, composed entirely of women dressed in traditional Kente clothes. Finally, the king stands in the crowd greeting and blessing the people who reciprocate the typical gesture of wish, holding out their arms with the forefinger and the middle finger raised.

This is a small reportage set in the new York subway. Its purpose is to describe the hectic and bizarre world of the new York subway, away from the colorful “surface” world made of the shopping windows and the spectacular overhanging skyscrapers of the big Apple.

STORIES & PORTFOLIOS

Isam Lil KlipsRoberto Ricca (Italy)

30th place

In this photographic project work, which lays in between reportage and portraiture, Roberto Ricca wants to document the constant and relentless pursuit of improvement in the life of a young immigrant boy, the dreams and difficulties typical of that particular stage of life between adolescence and adulthood. Isam Maarouf, aka Lil Klips, was born in Agadir (Morocco) in 1993. In 2004 he began to approach the hip hop culture in Morocco. In 2008 he discovered the art of beatbox: the ability to play percussion sounds with his mouth. Currently Lil Klips is one of the best beatboxer in Italy (ranked 4th at the national Championships in 2013), opening concerts for famous hip hop bands including Club Dogo. Today Isam / Lil Klips lives with her mother in San Paolo (brescia, northern Italy): he spends his day between concerts, the freestyle on the street and in shopping centers, the evenings with friends and girlfriend and trying to find a stable job.
