StorSimple in one sentence

An all-in-one high performance file storage and backup solution, designed to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by leveraging combined tiered private and public cloud based storage.

Architecture comparison

StorSimple advantages

Simplified administration

Encrypted cloud backups (AES-256)

Fast backup and near instant restore using the cloud

Automatic block level tiering

Page 17: Stor simple Event June2014.sven.differt

The physical appliance

Built for availability

• Fully redundant design• Able to run on a single

power supply• Supports MPIO between

host and appliance

• Nondisruptive Software Upgrades (NDU)

• Hot swap controllers, PCMs, and cooling fans

• RAID 10 SAS, and SSD

Keep in mind, a file is made up of multiple blocks. Since tiering is block level, data can span all three tiers.

Backup and recovery

Local Public Cloud

• Point-in-Time recovery options

• Stored as deduplicated and compressed

• Fast recovery in the case of accidental data loss

• Point-in-Time recovery options

• Stored as deduplicated and compressed

• Moderate recovery time in case of disaster or accidental data loss

• Multi-location restore options

2Options

Page 22: Stor simple Event June2014.sven.differt

22

Backup and recovery

Volume Restore• Recover and entire volume in case of corruption or deletion• Can be done from either local or cloud snapshot

Deterministic Thin Restores• All meta-data is first restored• Applications requesting data bring it back to the working set as

needed• Application performance is initially slower, but speeds up with

normal tiering

Page 23: Stor simple Event June2014.sven.differt

StorSimple security

Administrators authenticate to the Windows Azure management portal with a UserID and Password

Page 24: Stor simple Event June2014.sven.differt

24

StorSimple security

Additional Points

• Encryption key stays with the customer

• Data is encrypted before it leaves the appliance

• StorSimple allows for 64 storage accounts, each with its own set of 256-bit access keys

• Access to volumes can be secured
