1816, the year without a summer, a volcanic ash cloud fills the European skies and during a lost weekend on the dark shores of Lake Geneva stories of fear and horror are told by candlelight. One of the stories born that dark weekend was ‘Frankenstein’.

Following Proteus’ re-imagining of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ for

the stage, comes their version of Mary Shelley’s classic gothic tale of the ultimate act of creation spiralling out of control. The version blends the novel with the story of the book’s creation during the infamous weekend shared by Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley and Lord Byron. Created in Proteus’ unique style, fusing physical performance, circus, film and music, this is a Frankenstein that holds the mirror up to our modern anxieties concerning human genetics, cloning and

the revenge of nature. Created by the team that produced the critically acclaimed national tours of ‘Dracula’, ‘Houdini’ and ‘The Elephant Man’ which transferred to The Brits Off Broadway Festival in New York.

Tickets £8 from Sparsholt Post Office or 01962 776315/776543. Not suitable for under 12s.

Education Services

Autumn is approaching and among the “back to school” ideas, you might have

thought about what’s on offer for the grown-ups. The Test Valley, as we know, is long and thin, and transport links up and down are not brilliant. Education for adults is the responsibility of ‘Hampshire Learning’, working through its funded centres in Romsey, Andover, and Winchester. In the centre of the Test Valley, there is almost no funded provision, as HCC proved for itself in a survey last year. This is particularly true for ‘informal’ learning, which has in any case lost most of the funding it once had. In the last year, a successful branch of the University of the Third Age has formed around Stockbridge, and a small group in Broughton has been able to try out some ideas for informal learning with the help of a start-up grant from Hampshire Learning.

Set courses are tricky things to organise. Put them on in the evening, and people are reluctant to go out; put them on in the daytime, and employed people say they would have liked to come but couldn’t. Then there are the grandchildren, the transport, the shopping, the off-season holidays, and all the things that get in the way of what you really meant to do to keep that grey matter moving. In the end, most courses are found in the larger towns.

Undaunted, Broughton Learning put on taster sessions, workshops, and a short course or two, to see what happened, as well as a monthly lecture series, all of which opened up a good selection of new ideas. However, the real drivers for adult learning in these rural areas are the dozens of clubs and societies, all run by volunteers, some of whom are true experts in their field. Many of the clubs have a serious educational purpose, even if they don’t always emphasise this, and they encourage their members to take a long-term view of developing their new interest.Recognising the strength of these societies, we offered to make small payments from the grant to several societies which had ideas for extending their activities,

or for attracting new members. For example the Broughton Traditional Arts Group, home of the famous sword-dancers, put on a very successful, if tiring, drumming workshop, and hope to carry on with this. Even more ambitious was the apprentice vegetable growers group run by a member of the Broughton and Bossington Horticultural Society. 17 apprehensive starters were given a kit of seeds, and met regularly in the garden of their national award-winning tutor to see what he was doing with the same kit. The difference was usually startling, and proved if nothing else that the answer really does lie in the soil. There was even an exam for this one, in the form of the village horticultural show at the beginning of last month, when the entries were laid out for inspection and judging, and awarded points. The league table was quickly calculated and the prize for top of the class awarded. Truly scary, but with the in-built reward of more stuff to eat.

While we wait to see what happens in the re-organised adult learning arm of HCC, we have been given a further small grant, and we should like to invite proposals again from clubs and societies who might have ideas for developing their activities in ways that could be described as educational.

You must be an established society, with a committee and a track record of organising regular meetings and events; you must be in the central Test Valley group of villages, that is Kings Somborne, Mottisfont, Stockbridge, Longstock, Houghton, Tytherley, and of course Broughton. The activity you want to plan should be new, and specifically educational in nature. If you want to talk through an idea, or to make a proposal, get in touch with us by email at [email protected]. All events will be advertised throughout the villages, so keep an eye open for the notice boards, as well as the Broughton Village website.

Regency dancers, charity dog walks and classic cars have been just

some of the events that have taken place over the summer at Houghton Lodge and Gardens in Stockbridge.

The historic 18th century Cottage Orne, set in 15 acres of beautiful parkland above the River Test, has been a popular attraction for events due to the picturesque gardens with chalk cob walls, open space and tranquility of the river during sunny summer days.

The Hampshire Regency Dancers visited the privately owned house and gardens in July and enjoyed a Regency picnic. In full costume, the Winchester-based dance group delighted in a summer's afternoon at Houghton Lodge with a tour from owner Mrs Busk, along with time for some country dancing before a regency style picnic on the lawn.

The summer months have also seen a number of classic car rallies arrive at Houghton Lodge including the Rolls

Royce Enthusiasts Club which saw eighteen Rolls Royce and Bentley motor cars lined up on the grass and in front of the lodge. In August The Bean Car Club with a range of Vintage, Veteran and pre-1940 cars as well as Bean Cars arrived for a picnic and visit to the gardens with a view to visit on their annual Daffodil Run in Spring 2012.

A number of groups such as garden groups, local Women's Institute groups, University of the Third Age and the Parkinsons Society, have also enjoyed the beautiful walled garden, herbaceous borders, kitchen garden and walked the meadows alongside the River Test.

The Gardens are open until the 31st October (Thursday - Tuesday 10am - 5pm) Group tours of the house and the garden are by appointment and can be arranged by contacting 01264 810502.

For more information and admission visit www.houghtonlodge.co.uk.

If you enjoy fine wine and excellent dining, then the launch of the Norton Park

Wine Club could be exactly what you are looking for. Launched in association with Bibendum, one of the UK’s biggest wine companies, this exclusive club offers lifelong membership and the opportunity to enjoy a select number of wine tasting events throughout the year. Each dining and tasting evening allows members to partake of a selection of wines from a chosen region which are accompanied and complemented by a delicious meal carefully prepared by the top chefs at Norton Park. One of Bibendum’s most renowned wine connoisseurs, Graeme Sutherland, is on hand to discuss each of the wines in turn and encourage members and enthusiasts to understand more about the essentials of wine tasting.

“We’ve had more and more people express an interest in finding out about wines from different regions, asking why certain wines work well with certain food and

querying what to look for when tasting a wine, so we decided to launch the Norton Park Wine Club.” commented General Manager of Norton Park Michael Knox-Johnston. “We pride ourselves on the quality of dining at the hotel and by combining our specially prepared menus to accompany the selected wines, as well as having an expert from Bibendum on hand to discuss these choices, we hope we can encourage local people to join the wine club and come along and enjoy some excellent food, wine and knowledgeable company.”

Guests who attended the Norton Park Wine Club dining and tasting evening on 7th July enjoyed a selection of wines from Italy with accompanying food. Membership of the Norton Park Wine Club is a one-off fee of £50 for which members can enjoy invitations to exclusive tasting evenings with complimentary wine, expert advice from the Bibendum wine connoisseur and a delicious meal for only £25 per head. The next event will be held on 8th September.

For more information about the Norton Park Wine Club please go to www.QHotels.co.uk/nortonpark or call 01962 763009.

Rampant Reindeer, High Cats & mad Goats

There is evidence of animals deliberately c o n s u m i n g

hallucinogenic plants and fungi. One such species, which reindeer go to great lengths to search out, is the fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria). Eating the toadstool makes reindeer behave in a drunken fashion, running about aimlessly and making strange noises! Fly agaric can be dangerous because it also contains toxic substances. Reindeer seem to metabolise these toxic elements without harm, while the main psychoactive constituents remain unmetabolised and are excreted in the urine. Reindeer herders in Europe and Asia long ago learnt to collect the reindeer urine for use as a comparatively safe source of the hallucinogen.

Another hallucinogen used by wild animals is the African plant iboga (Tabernanthe iboga). It has been reported from Gabon and the Congo that boars, porcupines, gorillas and mandrills will dig up and eat the powerfully hallucinogenic roots.

In the Canadian Rockies, wild bighorn goats take great risks to get at a rare psychoactive lichen and by scraping it off the rock surface they can wear their teeth down to the gums. On the prairies of the south-west US, horses and other grazing mammals can become

addicted to hallucinogen-containing plants known generically as locoweed. These plants, mainly species of Astragalus and Oxytropis, are normally avoided, but animals that try them can come back time and again for a repeat fix. Symptoms include altered gait, aimless wandering, impaired vision, erratic behaviour and listlessness.

In South America’s rain forests, jaguars have been filmed behaving in a kittenish manner after gnawing the bitter roots and bark of yage (Banisteriopsis caapi), a hallucinogenic vine that is also used by native tribes in ritualistic ceremonies. Some anthropologists believe that man first learnt to use the drug after watching jaguars. Indeed when cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it or lick it, all the while inhaling the aromatic oil. They tend to leap about friskily or roll on the ground, but they may also show signs of drowsiness or anxiety. The effects last for five to 15 minutes, after which puss will not be sensitive to another dose for at least an hour.

Which all goes to show, the animal world has its fair share of junkies too!

A £5000 grant has been awarded to HART Wildlife Rescue by

Hampshire County Council. The funding, awarded by Councillor Ken Thornber, Leader of Hampshire County Council, will go towards purpose built aviaries and outbuildings, and construction of a pond.

“It is vital that Hampshire’s natural environment and rural heritage is conserved and enhanced so that visitors and residents can continue to enjoy all that it has to offer,” he said. “Thanks to the work of this charity, over half of the sick, injured or abandoned wild animals that they take in can be returned to their habitats. “This project will enable residents across the county to be referred to a Hampshire facility that is able to support greater numbers of injured animals and birds.” Hospital manager Charmian Greenland-Jones was delighted to hear the news. “We have been exceptionally busy since we moved to Soldridge Park just over a year ago,” she said. “Admissions are up by 188% and we are desperately in need of the larger mammal and water bird accommodation. “Our planning application was granted in April but we have been unable to proceed due to lack of finances. Hampshire County Council’s grant will make a huge difference to this project and we hope this vote of confidence in our operation will encourage further generous donations.

“We have already taken in 847 animals this year and currently have 105 on site including 34 hedgehogs and 10 tawny owls. We are managing to cope but it does mean a lot of juggling animals around and having to make do with less than ideal accommodation. Obviously with an increase in the number of casualties, running costs are even higher than before, so any donations are very welcome. A large quantity of newspapers is used each day and the charity is looking for a reliable source to keep supplies topped up. The charity’s funding comes entirely from donations, the majority of which is generated by its shop in Alton. It currently provides a rescue, treatment and rehabilitation service for wildlife throughout Hampshire not supplied by any other organization, as well as offering advice to vets, the RSPCA and members of the public. In order to continue and expand our work additional funding, similar to that generously given by HCC, is vital.

Somborne Sessions

The RHCH in Winchester marks its 275th anniversary on Tuesday

18 October 2011. To celebrate this remarkable institution there will be a service of celebration and thanksgiving in Winchester Cathedral at 7pm and we invite you to share this with us. The focal point of the service will be a choral work for massed childrens’ choirs by June Boyce–Tillman. This will be performed by several schools from across our catchment area. We do hope you can join us and ask that you email us at [email protected] or phone 01962 824359 to let us know if you would like to attend.

More than ever, patient care is at the heart of all that we do and forms the basis of many of our policies. To ensure we have the best possible environment for our patients we have launched two major fundraising appeals:The Magic Wand Appeal to rebuild our children’s unit to include more day care

assessment and treatment whilst adding six rooms with en-suite facilities for parents to stay with their child.

The Stroke of Luck Appeal to build a unique rehabilitation gym with state of the art technology and an area to prepare patients for their return to life at home. Our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit is rated as one of the top 25% in the UK and certainly one of the best in the South of England.

Details of other 275th anniversary events can be found on our website www.wehct.nhs.uk together with more information about our appeals and how you can support us. If you would like to help by donating or hosting an event for us please contact our Fundraising Manager, Nikki Oliver at [email protected] or phone 01962 825377.

Thank you! We so hope you will support your local hospital.

Top Live Music Lines Up At The Village Hall In King’s Somborne. Live music

performed by major talents from the worlds of folk, rock and jazz is about to arrive at the village hall in King’s Somborne, near Stockbridge.

‘Somborne Sessions’ is the banner for regular gigs at the Hall, starting this coming November. It’s all the brainchild of a small group of local music enthusiasts, backed by the Village Hall’s Development Committee. The inspiration was a similar series run in Ebbesbourne Wake, near Salisbury, as a fundraiser for the community hall there. The format is simple:

reasonably priced tickets (£10 per person) limited to 100 or so seats, a bar for refreshment and great music in the kind of intimate venue that the big names waiting in the wings don’t usually play.

First off on Saturday 12 November 2011 Polly and the Billets Doux are playing. Their dates so far this year have included the 100 Club in London, the Larmer Tree Festival and the iconic Glastonbury. On Thursday 1 December 2011, it’s the turn of Dave Pegg (Peggy) from Fairport Convention and ex- Jethro Tull along with guitar star PJ Wright, followed on Friday 13 January 2012 by Phil Beer, multi- instrumentalist and one half of the

incredibly talented acoustic roots duo, Show of Hands. More big names are in the process of being booked for later dates, including singer- songwriter and storyteller, Richard Digance.

It’s excellent musical entertainment in a convivial atmosphere at a great price. Tickets are sure to go quickly, so make certain that you book yours via the web site (www.sombornesessions.co.uk) or call Doug Stammers on 01794 389192, Carolyn Ryan on 01794 388743 or Peter Duncan on 01794 388059.

All events are 7.30 for an 8pm start. King’s Somborne Village Hall is just off the A3057 in the centre of the village. The postcode is SO20 6PP.

TO MAKE THE CRèME PâTISSIèREPut the vanilla in with the milk and bring to the boil. In the mean time, beat the yolks and sugar until they form a ribbon then mix in the flour. Add the milk little by little and continue stirring. Put the mixture back in the pan and cook for few minutes, stirring continually so as not to burn the bottom of the pan.

TO MAKE THE SOUffléS –for each individual ramekin you will need 2 tabs crème pâtissière, 1 egg white beaten very stiff and a dessertspoon of Grand Marnier.Set the oven at 200ºC. If you have prepared the crème pâtissière in advance and it has cooled, warm it up on the stove, (but no more than lukewarm) and add the Grand Marnier. Beat the egg whites until they are very stiff. Butter the ramekins and pour some sugar to coat the inside, remove any excess sugar. Pour the crème pâtissière mix into a mixing bowl and very gently fold in the egg whites with a wooden spoon. fill each ramekin; they must be “over full”. Put in the heated oven and cook for approximately 20/25 minutes, or until risen and brown. DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN while the soufflés are cooking. When ready, have some castor sugar ready and sprinkle quickly over the soufflés and serve at once.

The ONlY difficulty of the recipe is the oven. You need a good oven!! Next month, the recipe will be a savoury soufflé.

• 1/2 litre milk• Three eggs• 200g Sugar• 75g flour - sifted• 1/2 Vanilla stick

SOUffléPER RAMEKIN• 1 Beaten egg• 1 Dessert spoon Grand Marnier• Softened butter and caster sugar to line the ramekins.

What do you think?

There’s a thin line then between gossip and news. The pen, and sometimes the tongue, is mightier than the sword, enabling the most lewd mud to stick, for it’s all based on fact - apparently. So who do we trust to deliver an accurate literary account of the ‘fact’; the magazine, the tabloid, the broadsheet? What happens when all of them are owned by the same corporation? In that instance does the broadsheet accurately deliver the news while the tabloid simply regurgitates it in all its bilious, gossipy minutiae? Irrespective of journalistic style or type of publication, the source of the information may well be the same, and as recent events have demonstrated, some corporations will go to any lengths to get the story.

It may well be foolish to assume that there hasn’t been a reciprocal relationship between journalists, police and politicians for years, and equally ludicrous would be the notion that the secret services don’t bug those who represent a danger to national security. The odd leak here, the occasional bit of misinformation there, has perhaps worked well for decades, but hacking into the calls of those innocents in the depths of distress and despair was a step too far, and a salutary lesson for all.

What do you think?Gill Grant

Now let’s not pretend; we’ve all done it, and some of us have been the innocent victim of the nastier type of gossip, when you can’t defend yourself against

an untruth because the majority would prefer to believe the detrimental bits. Yep, been there, life-forming experience to find out who your friends really are...

With that aside, for all the negative connotations that the word ‘gossip’ has, for the most part when we talk about our friends amongst ourselves, it may well be that we are annoyed with them. Perhaps we’ve misinterpreted what they meant to say, or we don’t understand why they behave the way they do at times, but largely gossip about friends is rooted not in malicious envy, but in loving concern for their welfare.

However we human beings are a fickle bunch. If the gossip is regarding someone we’ve only heard of vaguely or any celebrity, well then it’s open season.

Gossip is a universal language and it’s big business. Dress it up how you like, you can buy a ‘quality’ gossip magazine or, well let’s face it, a ‘trash mag’ - the choice is yours. It’s a conscious choice based partly on the cost of the publication, partly on habit but mostly on an eye-catching headline and photo. There are, obviously, plenty who would never stoop to the depths of reading them (they say), and then there are those who scour the celebrity and society pages to bask in reflected glory when they manage to find someone within they actually know.

City and Guilds Qualified

very reasonable prices, and courteous friendly service from people you can trust in your homeHere's why one of the Test Valley's most trusted carpet cleaning companies is cleaning local, neighbours carpets for a fraction of the normal cost.

Dear Stockbridge Forum Reader. Value conscious local residents

love a great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

UpholsteryWe specialise in cleaning and refreshing three piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you'll see!

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
