Sunday was open top bus tour day! £80! later we were treated to a very comprehensive drive around, well, you name it we saw it. All except for Star I who became a proper teenager and proceeded to text for the duration.

Star I, it would appear, is at the age when parents can be an irritation and friends are all. If technologies had been available to us at that age then we would have been permanently engrossed in the touch screen too no doubt. However the Mary Poppins bit in me wanted to say, “For goodness sake put that phone away! Spit spot!! Look around you, you’re missing EVERYTHING!!

Still on Monday both the London Dungeon and the Tower of London focused the mind; torture it would seem is preferable to texting. Must remember that.

Unlike working models of ships engines.

On Tuesday in the Science Museum Star II found his utopian ideal, every piston, drive wheel and thingy, (sorry I’m a girl), of the miniature engines could be operated by the mere push of a button, heaven. After nearly two hours The Husband and Star I were to be found slumped on a bench in the corner; Star I is STILL texting!

A quick trip to the V&A and then a brisk walk to Harrods, as I wanted to show them the delights of the food hall and toy department. It was here that Star II came alive, but not in the way I expected. To find the toys, one finds oneself wending a wiry way through ‘Children’s Clothes’; here Star I paused and picked up a tiny leather jacket for a two year old.

“£1100? £1100.!!!!!”

“Ssssh, calm down!”

He was having none of it; by the time we’d looked at Stieff bears and a full size £800, gorilla he was ready to lynch someone. “This is obscene! Lets just go”

I’ve never counselled someone about capitalism and the morals of money whilst descending the Egyptian escalator before. A meal at the Rib Shack calmed him.

And so it was on Wednesday that the Pagan experience of living in the Capital came to an end; having broadened the horizons of Stars I and II, and emptied our wallets in the process I concluded it was well worth it!

Sandra Pagan - Hampshire Mum

October Half Term and we Pagans sojourn to the Big Smoke for five days. I was stressed, “I really hope they enjoy this trip”. “Of course they will Sandra love, I mean what could go wrong…”

Fortunately both Stars II & I had an Inset Day on the Friday before Half Term, so with limited luggage we found ourselves bound for Waterloo. Then, not two hours, later gazing out over the Tate Modern and beyond to the Gherkin from the sanctuary of our modern apartment.

First stop was Borough Market where French tarts, of the chocolate variety (Southwark is a nice area now), were purchased along with fruit and veg should I get the urge to cook that evening. No, instead hot- footed to a Pizza Express to meet with friends and enjoy the best view of St.Pauls.

Now I had a loose itinerary in place; it was Saturday so it was the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, lovely. Star II had other ideas, ”Can we walk across that wobbly bridge?” We were already running late and that route would take us in the wrong direction, I took a red pen to the itinerary,“Yes good idea, let's get going then. Come on, come on!”“Calm down Sandra love, keep your hair on!”

Once over the Millennium Bridge and into The City, Star II spied a sweet shop Harry Potter would have been proud of so in we went. Much like the passing of time we marched swiftly on and eventually arrived in the Mall, along with a thousand others who had grabbed the best vantage points. The police halted the traffic, right in front of us, and the mass band of whatever regiment it was marched by the crowds on the opposite side of the road, marvelous. Undaunted I suggested we stayed on as there was bound to be more and sure enough there were...about an hour and half later. The Pagan family sulk was rewarded by the Horse Guards, the band of the Guards and that of the Royal Air Force; stirring stuff.

“ Can we go now?” came the resounding cry.

Next stop, via Piccadilly, was Regents Street and the horror that is Hamleys. Five storeys of toy fest hell. To avoid a major strop from The Husband and Star I it was suggested they go in search of Abercrombie and Fitch, like that would help, while Star II looked for the perfect purchase with me. Fortunately three floors were rejected on the grounds that they were “for babies”, “boring”, or just “too pink”. Remote control cars and Air Fix was the place for us and indeed remained so for an hour until, after the purchase of a car and two Frisbees, we found ourselves once more amongst the throng outside.

Several texts later ‘gently’ enquiring as to our whereabouts, we were reunited and decided to go back to the apartment; well X-Factor was on the telly!

adorn the plant are said to be Frigg’s tears. It was pronounced by Frigg thenceforth that anyone standing underneath the plant should celebrate Baldur’s resurrection by kissing under the mistletoe. However a more rational explanation exists. Centuries ago it was believed that mistletoe was capable of curing illness and protecting against witchcraft and certain poisons and today, extract of mistletoe (Viscum album) is commonly used as an anticancer therapy and there are at least 30 different mistletoe preparations available throughout Europe. In fact around £30 million is reported to be spent annually on mistletoe preparations and in Germany, this is paid for by the insurance system.

Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophical medicine, was the first to suggest mistletoe as a treatment for cancer. Mistletoe is a semi-parasite that eventually kills its host. Steiner’s belief that extract of mistletoe could treat cancer was based on the unique properties of the mistletoe plant, which could restore imbalance in the growth process in cancer and therefore, potentially decrease the viability of cancer cells and disrupt their migration.

Have you ever found yourself trapped under a ghastly sprig of mistletoe

with the winner of the ‘Ugly man’ competition or perhaps dreamed of finding yourself beneath a branch of beautiful mistletoe with the ‘George Clooney’ of the Christmas party?

Have you ever wondered where the tradition of smooching under the mistletoe stemmed from? There are a few different theories but it is the Norse myth of Baldur, the god of truth and light that is most frequently reported.

THE NORSE MYTHBaldur dreamt that he was to be killed. His mother Frigg goddess of love, in an attempt to protect him ordered every animal and plant not to harm him however, there was one plant she forgot about - mistletoe. Loki (god of evil) made an arrow, placing mistletoe at its tip. He then lured Hoder (god of winter), Baldur’s blind brother, and made him shoot the arrow at his brother. Baldur’s death brought winter into the world, although the gods did eventually manage to resurrect Baldur. From there on Frigg pronounced mistletoe as sacred and ordered that it should bring love and not death to the world. The pearly white berries that

The Christmas ProcessionWednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd December, 7.00pm (doors open 6.00pm). This is the Cathedral’s carol service with readings interspersed between carols. Here the focus of the procession is the Christmas Crib and the story of the birth of Jesus.

The Epiphany ProcessionSunday 15 January 2012, 4.30pm. This service commemorates the journey of the Magi travelling from the East to worship the baby Jesus, and follows him through his early life and into manhood.

Please note there can be no admission to these services once all the seats are taken.

Salisbury Cathedral is the setting for three great processional services

which celebrate the special time of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. The Christmas Procession is on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd December and The Epiphany Procession on Sunday 15th January 2012. David Halls, Director of Music, conducts the Cathedral Choir of boy and girl choristers and lay-vicars.

Many hundreds of people from throughout the diocese and beyond are expected to attend one or more of these imaginative and spectacular services, devised by the Canon Precentor, Jeremy Davies. “I see Advent, Christmas and the Epiphany as the ideal time of year for using the Cathedral as it was originally envisaged, as an arena for processions and the great tradition of ‘worship on the move’. However these processions also invite us on an

FOR THE CAKE Pre-heat oven to 180ºC. Butter & flour a 21cm, 4cm deep cake tin. Prepare all the ingredients and separate the eggs. Melt the chocolate with the coffee in a double boiler and stir until melted. Remove the pan from the stove and beat in the butter, a few pieces at a time, with a wooden spoon, let the chocolate mixture cool, lightly beat the egg yolks and then gradually beat in the sugar and continue beating until mixture forms a ribbon. Beat the egg whites with the salt until soft peaks are formed, add the 2 tblsp sugar and beat until very stiff. Blend the chocolate mixture into the egg yolks/sugar mixture. With a metal spoon carefully fold one quarter of the egg white mixture into the chocolate mix. When partially blended, sift in a quarter of the flour and continue blending and repeat the same until all the egg whites and flour are well blended. Bake for 30 minutes at 180ºC.

FOR THE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE Melt the chocolate slowly using a double boiler and remove from the heat; then add the ingredients in the following order and gently mix in before adding the rest: coffee, butter, beaten egg yolks and brandy. Beat the egg whites until stiff and gently fold with a wooden spoon into the chocolate mix.

TO ASSEMBLE THE gATEAU Cut a strip, (collar) slightly longer than the diameter of the tin; cut two long strips and cut a round piece the size of the bottom of the tin. Place the two strips inside the tin; place the round piece on top and then the collar. The two long strips will help to remove the cake from the tin. When the sponge is cold, cut in half, horizontally, very carefully and evenly. Place one piece inside the tin, pour half the chocolate mousse on top; let it set for an hour. Place the second half in the tin and cover with the remaining mousse, using a spatula to smoothen the top carefully. Cover and leave the cake to set in a fridge, for 36 hours before serving.

There are 15 painters, sculptors, ceramicists and photographers in the Christmas show. "There is a mix of new faces and old favourites and we are very optimistic that it will be well-received", says an ebullient Ian. "Our market is still strong as indicated by the fact that our last show, paintings of birds on ledgers by Nancy Rose Taplin, was an absolute sell-out".

The exhibition runs from 26th November until 24th December and prices range from around £130 to "Flanders Mud" at £48,000.

Please call the gallery for more information. (01264) 810717/www.courcoux.co.uk.

A marvellous new Philip Blacker bronze of a horse trudging through the

bog that was Flanders field is the centrepiece of an extremely exciting Christmas exhibition which opens on Saturday 26th November at Courcoux & Courcoux Contemporary Art in Stockbridge. Blacker, an ex-National Hunt jockey and former pupil of Broughton based sculptor Margot Dent, is very well-known for his many life-size bronze commissions of famous racehorses including Desert Orchid at Kempton Park, Red Rum at Aintree and Generous at Epsom but "Flanders Mud", standing five feet high, is his first foray into expressionist sculpture.

"I have known Philip for many years and, as a keen racegoer, I have greatly admired his wonderful bronzes", said gallery MD Ian Courcoux. "From a professional standpoint, however, my gallery is not known for exhibiting realism. This new work is very exciting and gives us a chance to work together for the first time".

What do you think?

the road in their way. Well I’m not (that) old and I pay my road tax, so tough.

You see bumper huggers everywhere: on the motorway, in village lanes. They are no respecters of class nor creed. Their cars likewise, range from hot hatches with exhausts so big you could stuff a coconut up them (yes I have been tempted), through to reps’ saloons, 4WD and all the up-market varieties. Talking of which, the only time I will tolerate bumper hugging and slow to a snail’s pace to watch them glide by is if the car behind is an Audi. Well, I need a bit of wish fulfillment in my life - but even that can prove irritating if the driver turns out to be young, female and blonde! Is there no justice?

The truth may be that I’m turning into a grumpy old woman or that I have become obsessed with bumper huggers, but the fact remains that on every journey I take, they appear and adhere.

Is it simply a question of bad driving - or more to do with impatience born out of the pace of life?

What do you think? Gill Grant

I mean, is it just me? I shall soon be purchasing one of those rear window stickers that says something along the lines of, ‘You’re driving so close I can only assume you feel a degree of intimacy towards me, but shouldn’t we at

least talk and have dinner first?’

What is it with these people? Take the Mini that glued itself to my bumper the other night on my way back from Itchen Abbas. Now the last time I looked, the speed restriction from there to Alresford alternates between 30 and 40 mph. It’s not my fault, I didn’t invent the law and, I have to say, that 30 can be a tedious speed at which to drive at times, but that’s not the point; speed restrictions are there for a reason.

The person driving behind would have been straight into the back seat if I had needed to brake suddenly. What were they hoping to achieve by driving so close - make me go faster? Well sorry, it makes me want to slow down, but worse still it makes me really aggressive; I really wanted to stop the car in the road, get out and have a go! ‘Just what speed would you like me to do in a 30 mph limit? 40? 50?’ That’s what I wanted to scream at them à la Basil Fawlty whilst brandishing a tree branch with which to beat their car.

I suppose it’s my fault. I have an old car, therefore, they assume, it is driven by an elderly person who shouldn’t be on

Angelo Mariani, a French chemist, was inspired by Mantegazza's paper but had other ideas that brought him great riches. In 1863, he began marketing his Vin Mariani made from Bordeaux wine treated with coca leaves.. The ethanol in the wine acted as a solvent which extracted the cocaine from the coca leaves thus giving the drink its very unusual properties. Advertisements for Vin Mariani claimed that it would restore health, strength, energy, and vitality. Mariani's tonic wine became very popular and even boasted Queen Victoria, Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Saint Pius X as fans of it. Pope Leo awarded a Vatican gold medal to Mariani for his wine, and even appeared on a poster advertising it.

Meanwhile Sigmund Freud, in his work Uber Coca, optimistically wrote of cocaine: "Long intensive physical work is performed without any fatigue. This result is enjoyed without any of the unpleasant after-effects that follow exhilaration brought about by alcohol. Absolutely no craving for the further use of cocaine appears after the first, or even after repeated taking of the drug."

By the 1880s, cocaine was available in various forms, including cigarettes, powder, and even a cocaine mixture that came with a needle in the pack that could be injected directly into the user's veins. One manufacturer promised that its products would "supply the place of food, make the coward brave, the silent eloquent and render the sufferer insensitive to pain."

By the Edwardian era, any gentleman with the necessary funds could easily emulate the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and obtain a cocaine fix simply by popping into his local chemist.

100 years ago Captain Robert Falcon Scott, three colleagues and a mixed

caravan of motor vehicles, dogs, and horses started an epical and final dash for the Pole. His notorious journey was sustained through courage, patriotism and drugs because in 1911 anyone could buy cocaine from a pharmacy.

The humble coca leaf was chewed by South American natives for centuries claiming it provided extra strength and energy. This was a view shared by Spanish invaders in the 16th century, on long journeys where food was scarce. Naturally, the Spanish soon began taxing the leaf, taking 10 per cent of every farmer's crop.

In 1609, Father Blas Valeta reported: "Coca protects the body from many ailments, and our doctors use it in powdered form to reduce the swelling of wounds, to strengthen broken bones, to expel cold from the body or prevent it from entering, and to cure rotten wounds or sores that are full•of maggots. And if it does so much for outward ailments, will its singular virtue have even greater effect in the entrails of those who eat it."

In 1859, a Milanese doctor, Paolo Mantegazza, upon his return from Peru, declared coca, and its recent .extract cocaine, as being useful medicinally; in the treatment of "a furred tongue in the morning, flatulence, and whitening of the teeth."

The History of Cocaine

But the cocaine and alcohol party was to end with a bang. A lot of them! In 1916, two years into the Great War, alarmed by the impact on the war effort of a drunken citizenry, and reports of drug-crazed soldiers on leave, the Government reacted. The Defence of the Realm Act introduced limits to the hours pubs could open and ensured the possession, distribution and sale of cocaine and opium were to be controlled by the Home Office. Yet ironically soldiers appear to

have been introduced to cocaine by the Government itself when army personnel had been issued with the proprietary "Forced March'' brand cocaine tablets to provide that "little something extra" when on active service.

The party was indeed over. But for Captain Scott and his team the party had ended four years earlier.Scott died on March 29, 1912, the last of his team to do so. Their frozen bodies were found eight months later. His final diary notes record: "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman."

But exactly how much pharmacy had contributed to that tale, none living could say but like the soldiers of the Great War, Scott, too, had travelled carrying Forced March brand cocaine tablets.

The bulk of the contents are paper-based. Together with some local history books, local magazines, Electoral Roll, the Andover Advertiser and our 2012 Calendar, there are over 50 pamphlets which depict prices of goods, services and house sales, timetables, local walks, eating out, Digital TV Switchover and National Gardens Scheme; over 30 items featuring local groups and local events, photographs of flora & fauna & village landmarks and over 50 profiles of Wherwell families & villagers. We hope the capsule will lay undisturbed into the 22nd century and give a fascinating insight into our village in the early 21st century.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who responded to our

Armed Forces and their long term rehabilitation.

Afghan Connection (http://www.afghanconnection.org/). In 1987, as a medical student, Dr Sarah Fane spent 3 months in the North West Frontier during the Russian war and returned in 2001 while Afghanistan was under the Taliban regime. She will take us through her experiences at these extraordinary times and how she set up her Newbury based Charity in 2002 which has supported numerous health projects and funded 37 schools, 20 of which are twinned to UK schools. Afghan Connection is also running a project with the MCC to take cricket to

email appeal and/or has taken part in an interview and loaned family photographs. It has been a delight to talk to people about the village, especially those who have lived here 50 years or more. There is a limit to how much can be written on a single A5 sheet of paper! We hope that next year, we can build on the success of

this project by conducting some in-depth oral interviews and include residents of Chilbolton also.

done at the epicentre of this highly volatile, dangerous and politically sensitive area.

The lectures start at 8pm in the Upper Clatford Village Hall. A minimum charge of £2.00 will be made and we would suggest a voluntary donation of £10.00, making a total of £12 per person per lecture, which will enable us to claim Gift Aid. All funds raised will be split equally between the three Charities and All Saints Church. If you would like tickets, please contact Charles Crosthwaite Eyre (The Old Malthouse, Upper Clatford, Andover, Hampshire SP11 7QL; e-mail [email protected] or tel 01264 35 25 30) to confirm how many tickets you want and for which talks. Cheques should be made out to "All Saints PCC".

By the time you read this, the Wherwell Church Time Capsule will have

been buried in the churchyard. The contents were on display last month at the Wherwell Coffee Morning, the History Group meeting and the Church ‘Topping Out’ event.

A full list of contents can be viewed on the Wherwell website at: www.wherwell.net/wherwell-church-time-capsule.htm. The time capsule is a metal clad box measuring 12 inches by 9 inches by 6 inches deep. It has been professionally sealed, and is air-tight, water-tight and anything-else-tight! Residing deep underground should maintain a fairly constant temperature and help preserve the contents.

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!
