STICKLEY MARKS GUSTAV STICKLEY’S 150TH BIRTHDAY,AND LAUNCHES NEW BRAND

Marking the 150th anniversary of Gustav Stickley’s birth, L. & J.G. Stickley, Inc. of Manlius, New York, features several noteworthy additions to its Historic Mission Collection. These Arts & Crafts pieces, along with a series of entertainment units, gathering tables, and Antiquities Accents add over 40 pieces to Stickley’s diverse offerings. A new rich brown finish, Mocha #18, and 110 fabrics and 22 leathers, will debut at the company’s 225 North Elm Street showroom during the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina.

The Historic Mission Collection is a lasting and vibrant tribute to the vision and designs of Gustav Stickley and is enhanced by 10 additional introductions. The 53” high Commemorative Gus Bookcase is a reissue of a 1901 Gustav Stickley design. An original sold in December 2007 at Sotheby’s in New York City for $361,000. The flared tops of the vertical mullions reflect the shape of the corbels, lending a truncated arch effect to the top row of windows. The inverted corbels and the double legs at each corner of the bottom visually anchor the cabinet to the floor. A charming Gus Tabouret Table features a hexagonal top inlaid with tile. Each side is fitted with a pair of corbels. The medium-sized Chapel Street Rocker with its distinctive arms is a reissue of a L. & J.G. Stickley original, circa 1910, now housed in the Stickley Museum. A 52” Kitchen Island comes with a hard maple butcher block top or black granite top. A simply functional Gathering Table will be very much at home in kitchens or party rooms. It extends to 56” with a 16” self-storing leaf and is a perfect accompaniment to Stickley’s Mission counter stools. The Argyle Street Bistro Table is 36” square, with carved and pierced legs positioned on the diagonal for a unique presentation.

Antiquities Accents is an exciting new offering of 20 classic and casual occasional pieces, ranging from versatile side tables to a functional terrace server. Some are available in an antiqued black rub-through finish, and others in a combination of mahogany tops and painted bases. A highlight of this series is a distinctive Pedestal Center Table and a Pedestal Cocktail Table, both with a 48” round marquetry top of quartered English brown oak and Carpathian elm burl. Other accent pieces include a 36” square Game Table, a Storage Cocktail Table with bookcase ends, and a 52” Sofa Table. Also new to Antiquities by Stickley offerings is a 52” diameter English Oak Pedestal Table with parquet top and a 68” high Study Armoire for the Stickley Starters youth furniture group.

The sleek and contemporary Metropolitan Collection debuts a 56” Gathering Table with boat-shaped top and one 16” self-storing leaf, a practical 52” Kitchen Island, and a 64” Open China Deck. A graceful 71” high Metro Etagere has graduated shelves and openings accessible from all sides.

A series of Home Theater and Entertainment pieces is being added to both the Mission and Metropolitan Collections this spring. A TV Console can be fitted with either three storage drawers or three doors. In the Mission piece, the doors have either a butterfly inlay or a Harvey Ellis motif inlay. There is also a smaller version of the TV Console with two storage drawers or two doors. As stand alone units, the consoles have overhanging tops and corbels. Left and Right Open Bookcases may be bunched with the consoles. Two sizes of Bridge, with optional lighting, and Adjustable Center Speaker Shelf are available to connect these components.

The St. Croix Collection reflects the many European, North American and African influences that evolved over time into the Caribbean style. An impressive Poster Bed has twist and carved posts and a carved headboard with crotch mahogany. The bed is available in queen, king and California king sizes. Other St. Croix introductions include a 54” Table Desk with tooled leather top, a 50” Cocktail Table, a Single Dresser, and a Lamp Table with drawer.

Stickley Fine Upholstery and Craftsman Leather continues its dynamic growth with the introduction of 17 new frames, 110 new fabrics, 22 new leathers, and 10 new trims. New and notable this market is the Highland Park Sofa, with its clean, casual sophistication, relaxed dressmaker skirt, and luxurious spring down seating. The elegant Haverford Sofa adds a touch of traditional flair with its gracefully curved frame, opulently padded arms and deep seating comfort. For those who prefer smaller scale seating, the Roanoke Sofa, with its tailored, traditional roll arm and tight, marshall-unit back, provides universal comfort in a plush yet supportive sofa.

Also new for April are the exciting new Tempe, Linville, and Pinehurst chairs, a series of three high-back wing, lounge and swivel chairs, available in both leather and fabric. Also added this market is the Grisham Swivel Chair, based on the best-selling Grisham Chair, and the Salter Sofa, inspired by the success of the Salter Chair from the leather collection.

Antiquities Accents is an exciting new offering of 20 classic and casual occasional pieces that will appeal to a variety of tastes. Pieces range from versatile side tables to a functional terrace server and a practical game table. Some are available in an antiqued black rub-through finish, and others in a combination of mahogany tops and painted bases. A highlight of this series is a distinctive 30” high Pedestal Center Table with its elaborate marquetry top. Marquetry is a centuries old craft of covering a surface with pieces of veneer to create a decorative pattern or picture. Its European origins date back to the 16th century. The Pedestal Center Table’s 48” ornate top is made of quartered English brown oak and Carpathian elm burl. The four-leg octagonal pedestal base and rim are constructed of solid white oak. The identical marquetry top also is available on a 22” high Pedestal Cocktail Table.

Stickley responds to this demand with a new series of home entertainment/home theater pieces available in the contemporary Metropolitan Collection and in the Historic Mission Collection. Two sizes of TV Console, 54” and 64”, are available in the Metropolitan Collection. In the Mission styling, the consoles are available in 50” and 68” sizes. All consoles may be fitted with either doors or drawers. The Mission doors have butterfly inlay or a Harvey Ellis motif inlay. The larger console is equipped with two rows of pull-out trays, offering a total storage capacity of more than 100 DVDs or 150 CDs. As stand alone pieces, the consoles have overhanging tops and corbels. All consoles feature quick-release back panels for easy access. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Gustav Stickley’s birth, and the Arts & Crafts or Mission style furniture he created at the turn of the 20th century is more popular than ever. To commemorate this historic milestone, Stickley is reissuing a rare Gus Bookcase, circa 1901 design. An original, once part of a private camp’s furnishings in New York’s Thousand Islands region, sold in December 2007 at Sotheby’s in New York City for $361,000. This piece is quite representative of Gustav Stickley’s aesthetic shift to “the structural style of cabinet making… a combination of honest craftsmanship and visible construction.” Stickley came to believe that structural elements, such as corbels, could lend decoration to a piece, provided they appeared only where needed and actually performed their intended function. This bookcase incorporates frame and panel sides and shiplap plank-ing. There are 12 panes of glass adorning each door. The flared top of the vertical mitered mullions on each door reflects the shape of the bookcase’s corbels, giving a truncated arch effect to the top row of panes. The inverted corbels and the double legs at each corner of the bottom visually anchor the cabinet to the floor. The bottom front rail has an inverted “v” shape. Inside, there is one adjustable shelf above the fixed center shelf, and another below it. The Gus Commemorative Bookcase is available in solid quartersawn white oak. The first 150 of this historic reissue produced will bear a plaque with an individual number.

2008 marks the 150th anniversary of Gustav Stickley’s birth, and the Arts & Crafts or Mission style furniture he created at the turn of the 20th century is more popular than ever. To commemorate this historic milestone, Stickley is reissuing a rare Gus Bookcase, circa 1901 design. An original, once part of a private camp’s furnishings in New York’s Thousand Islands region, sold in December 2007 at Sotheby’s in New York City for $361,000. This piece is quite representative of Gustav Stickley’s aesthetic shift to “the structural style of cabinet making…a combination of honest craftsmanship and visible construction.” Stickley came to believe that structural elements, such as corbels, could lend decoration to a piece, provided they appeared only where needed and actually performed their intended function. This bookcase incorporates frame and panel sides and shiplap planking. There are 12 panes of glass adorning each door. The flared top of the vertical mitered mullions on each door reflects the shape of the bookcase’s corbels, giving a truncated arch effect to the top row of panes. The inverted corbels and the double legs at each corner of the bottom visually anchor the cabinet to the floor. The bottom front rail has an inverted “v” shape. Inside, there is one adjustable shelf above the fixed center shelf, and another below it. The Gus Commemorative Bookcase is available in solid quartersawn white oak. The first 150 of this historic reissue produced will bear a plaque with an individual number.
