Stewardship Reflections

Today’s Gospel reveals Jesus as being amazed that the people in his

hometown of Nazareth do not accept his teaching and ministry; he is

taken aback by their lack of faith (Mk 6:6). Good stewards recognize

and participate in Christ’s teaching, reconciling and healing presence in

their community. Are we good stewards of our family of faith? Do we

value and support the ministries that take place in Christ’s name? Are

we attentive to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our parish and

encourage those who work to enhance our life of faith?

THE COMMUNION FAST

When you attend Mass, do you make yourself

at home, and do you go up for Holy

Communion? We come to Mass to relax and

be in His presence, to talk to Him, to listen to

Him.

Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ in

the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

The U.S. Bishops’ recommend that we “receive communion devoutly

and frequently”. To receive Holy Communion worthily it is necessary to

be free from mortal sin, to have a right intention and to obey the

Church's laws on the fast required before Holy Communion out of

reverence for the body and blood of Our Divine Lord. The Eucharist

itself forgives our minor offenses and helps us avoid offending God in

the future.

Pope Paul VI reduced the fasting requirement after the Second Vatican

Council, requiring only a one hour fast from all food and drink

(excluding water). This may be reduced to 15 minutes for those who are

sick or for other important reasons. This is the practice currently in

force. An hour of conscientious fasting makes it more likely that we will

give some thought to what Communion is all about: Becoming whom we

eat.

We should prepare ourselves for Holy Communion by thinking of Our

Lord whom we are about to receive, and by making fervent acts of faith,

hope, love, and contrition. He who knowingly receives Holy Communion

in mortal sin receives the body and blood of Christ, but he does not

receive His graces and commits a grave sin of sacrilege.

After Holy Communion we should spend some time adoring Our Lord,

thanking Him, renewing our promises of love and of obedience to Him,

and asking Him for blessings for ourselves and others.

Venimos a
