Grades K-2

Tiers1, 2, and 3

Participants will learn how to:• Describe how reading develops

in the brain for good and poor readers;

• Become a critical consumer of educational brain claims;

• Teach early literacy using flexible techniques that emphasize the alphabetic principle;

• Understand how phonological awareness supports reading fluency and comprehension;

• Teach alphabet letters and sounds using a multisensory approach for better letter recognition;

• Teach phonological awareness using a sequential approach;

Instructor Jane Ashby, Ph.D.

Senior Director of Education.

Jane holds advanced degrees in Education (Harvard) and Psychology (University of Massachusetts). She is experienced with several structured literacy approaches, including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, LETRS, and Project Read. By combining an in-depth knowledge of literacy instruction and current brain science, she helps classroom teachers grow pedagogical skills that empower all children to experience the joy of reading.

Course OverviewHumans are not born with the ability to read, yet we learn to do so. How does this happen? Understanding how the human brain changes as children learn to read can improve literacy education for every child. This interactive course is designed for educators who wish to learn effective teaching strategies for growing the knowledge domains that support beginning literacy in Kindergarten - Grade 2: oral language, letter formation, and understanding the alphabetic principle. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the key processes that influence early literacy: phonological awareness, orthographic mapping, fluency, and comprehension. Take the course this Summer to understand how the human brain changes with literacy development, learn techniques, and prepare lesson plans. Test-drive those lesson plans in your classroom in the Fall, and then share your experience!

This course is available for three graduate credits from Castleton University.

Orton-Gillingham: Advanced MorphologyAn understanding of morphology improves word identification, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression. How can we teach morphology and challenge advanced students to decode and comprehend Tier II and Tier III words? This one-day workshop will teach morphology from basic prefixes and suffixes to Latin and Greek combining forms. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of free and bound morphemes, Anglo-Saxon, Latin, and Greek derivations, and how to explicitly teach morphological awareness while also teaching vocabulary and grammar. Participants will receive 6.5 continuing education hours. Come ready to dissect and play with words!

Course OverviewThis course provides participants with an overview of the Wilson Reading System® (WRS) 4th Edition curriculum and serves as the prerequisite for WRS Level I Certification. Over three consecutive days (16.5 hours), this course examines how WRS addresses the teaching of phonemic awareness, word identification, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension through an integrated study of phonology, morphology, and orthography with students in grade two and above with persistent phonological coding deficits.

Participants learn about reading research, dyslexia, appropriate student identification and placement, program implementation, progress monitoring, scheduling, and creating a successful learning environment. Principles of language structure and how to teach language with direct, multisensory methods are demonstrated and practiced during the course. Webinars

Short on time? Watch one of our 90 minute pre-recorded webinars.

Teaching Narrative Language and DiscourseViewers will dive into the assessment and treatment of impairments in discourse and narrative language in school-age children. Difficulty with oral narration is frequent, even in children whose oral language is unimpaired at the sentence level. This can impact academic achievement and writing, social interactions, and even overall quality of life. This webinar will look at important background information on prevalence and consequences of impaired discourse, the importance of different genres of discourse (e.g., procedural, personal, fiction, expository, conversation), and how to assess discourse. Treatment options will be discussed, including existing curricula and individualized literature-based intervention.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® 0-3: An IntroductionThis research-based workshop will provide information and practical strategies to develop language, vocabulary, sentence structure and pragmatics (reciprocal conversation). Attendees will also learn how to use books to develop vocabulary, conversation and comprehension. They will learn rhymes and songs to promote phonological awareness and playful activities to encourage alphabet knowledge.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® 3-5: Understanding & Fostering Phonological AwarenessParticipants will learn play-based, developmentally appropriate activities to use to promote phonological awareness in children ages 3-5. Through shared book reading, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and the speech to print connection, participants will be able to make a difference in a child’s future reading success.

Red Flags for Preschool Language DevelopmentParticipants will focus on identifying preschool language concerns and knowing when to make a referral for early identification. We will review developmentally appropriate activities that you can use for scaffolding preschool language skills.

Visual Supports for Children with AutismExplore an overview of the function and use of visual supports for scaffolding language, behavior, and social communication. A review of the theoretical underpinnings supporting the use of visuals to scaffold socio-communicative impairments is provided, followed by practical hands-on applications to be used across educational and clinical settings.

Promoting Social Skills for Infants and Toddlers

Participants will gain an understanding of the development of language and social skills in children and how this development aids in early identification, if necessary, and instructional decision-making.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR LITERACY® is a program for early care and education providers that uses language play to build a foundation for reading success in kindergarten.
