FUNDRAISING HOW-TO

ENGAGE YOUR NETWORK IN FUNDRAISING.• Have an AuSM Super Bowl party. Invite your friends to cheer on their favorite Steps for Autism team!• See if your workplace will match the dollars you raise.• Do you know a local celebrity? Ask him or her to help you promote your team!• Set up a Steps for Autism coin collection/donation station in your office.• Team up with a business in your community to host a bowl-a-thon, read-a-thon, or similar event.• See which one of your teammates can raise the most money. Make it a competition!• Make sure you’re checking in periodically with your teammates to see how things are going.• Don’t be afraid to create super outfits for the walk or build your team spirit in another way.• Have a bake sale and donate the proceeds.

MAXIMIZE YOUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS.• Check out AuSM’s website for information on how donations impact our community. Feel free to use our language.• Include a photo or video when you can. It helps people to connect with your story.• Add copy to your fundraising page so that people know your unique story.• Be personal. An e-mail to a friend will encourage a greater response than a general post on your social media. Don’t be afraid to ask.• Social media is a great way to share. If someone can’t donate, ask them to share your post with their friends. The more people sharing your name and fundraiser, the better. When someone donates to your team, ask him or her to share through their social media outlets.• Be creative! No matter what story you’re telling, there’s a way to be cute, funny, or inspiring. Things that tend to get big reactions are cute kids and animals, but honesty and your own personality will go a long way.• Remind your donors that any amount helps. Choose somewhere like work, a church group, or another organization and ask everyone for a minimal donation. You’ll be surprised at the willingness of people who want to donate more.• Donate to your own or your team’s page.• Don’t be afraid to ask multiple times. One in four fundraising e-mails from family or friends elicit a donation. Increase those odds with more asks.• Make sure you say thank you. AuSM will thank donors, but it means a lot to get a personal thank you as well.

If you have questions, visit www.ausm.org or contact Mark Fangmeier at [email protected] or 651.647.1083 ext. 19.
