St. Patrick’s Day SymbolsThe shamrock, or “seamroy,” symbolizes the rebirth of spring. It was later adopted as a symbol of Irish nationalism.

The leprechaun, or “lobaircin” was a cranky, “small-bodied fellow” of Celtic folklore, given its “cute” features and popularized in the United States by Walt Disney.

St. Patrick’s Day SymbolsSt. Patrick was rumoured to drive out snakes from Ireland. He never drove snakes from Ireland; the story is a metaphor for driving paganism from the island.

The traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage has been modified in the United States. Irish bacon has been replaced with corned beef for the annual feast.

Music has always been an important part of Irish life.

Irish music is produced with instruments like the fiddle, the uilleann pipes, the tin whistle, and the

Not in this land alone,But be God's mercies known,From shore to shore!Lord make the nations see,

That men should brothers be,

And form one family,The wide world ov'er

From every latent foe,From the assasins blow,God save the Queen!O'er her thine arm extend,For Britain's sake defend,Our mother, prince, and friend,God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store,On her be pleased to pour,Long may she reign!May she defend our laws,And ever give us cause,To sing with heart and voice,God save the Queen!
