Your social life can be as lively or as relaxed as you want while you are in the UK.

Being a student in the UK is about social time as well as studying.

The UK benefits from a rich history and an amazing cultural scene, so there is always something to see and do – from museums, art galleries and other visitor attractions to theatres, parks and live music. Meet with friends for a coffee, catch a film, go shopping, or get the blood pumping with some sport or outdoor activity.

All English language centres provide social opportunities to help you settle in, meet people and practice your English. International students tell us how easily they make new friends from all over the world.

Depending on your visa, you may also be allowed to work part-time up to 10 hours a week during term time and full-time during your holiday. It could be a great way to pick up some work experience during your stay.

Accredited centres will help you research your accommodation options, which is a real advantage when you are travelling to a new country.

Accommodation options include:

RESIDENTIAL Many international students live in student accommodation. They rent in halls of residence, student houses or flats, usually with their own room but sharing a kitchen and bathroom.

HOMESTAYYou live with a family, with your own bedroom or sharing with another student. This can be a good option if you want to learn the language from native speakers and experience more of the British culture.

A HOTEL OR HOSTELThere is a wide range of hotels and hostels on offer, from budget student hostels to five star hotels.

The UK has some of the most vibrant, colourful cities in the world. There is always something cultural to do right on your doorstep - in fact many of Britain’s museums and galleries are completely free to visit.

Living in a city gives you the easiest of access to a huge range of social activities. Meet with friends in one of the many cafes or bars, go bowling or to the cinema, or spend the day exploring shops. You can find all sorts of international cuisine in the UK - why not sample something new, or remind yourself of the comforting taste of home?

Historic cathedral and university towns also offer a diverse range of activities for those who prefer cosmopolitan life on a slightly smaller scale. Investigate Britain’s architectural heritage as you wander through cobbled streets and traditional marketplaces.

Exploring the countryside in the UK is like a step back in time. Take a trip down winding lanes, through fields, across parks and into picturesque market towns, and you experience traditional rural life and a variation of landscapes around every turn.

Sample the fresh country air whilst trying out new sporting activities – why not trek through rugged national parks or have a go at mountain-biking? Reward yourself at the end of the day with a traditional scone, tea and clotted cream.

A huge range of wildlife is found in rural areas of the UK, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to match – you could go bird watching, visit a nature reserve, try horse riding or perhaps turn your hand to fishing in a lake or river?

As an island, the UK has always had a strong relationship with the sea. Horizons broaden at the coast, with the freshest of air and a huge range of outdoor pursuits. Explore the cliff tops and beaches on a beautiful coastal walk, take a sightseeing boat trip, or even have a go at surfing.

Along the UK’s 11,000 miles of coastline, there are many popular places to visit and study. Attractions range from traditional holiday resorts with piers and arcades along the seafront, to fishing villages and harbours crowded with boats.

The British coast has many areas of outstanding natural beauty - in fact, many of the UK’s natural World Heritage Sites are found on the shoreline. You will find sandy beaches, rocky coves and dramatic, craggy cliffs.

The UK’s coast has all sorts of seafood to offer - sample more sophisticated dishes such as oyster and crab, or try famous fish and chips as you wander along the beach.
