Motorcycle Grand Prix racing returned to Austria in 2016 after a break of 18 years.

Three years ago, Austria hosted a motorcycle Grand Prix event for the first time since 1997.

The first Austrian GP took place in 1971 at the Salzburgring cir-cuit, which hosted Grand Prix racing on 22 occasions.

At that first Austrian GP in 1971, Giacomo Agostini (MV Agusta) won the 500cc race, finishing more than a lap ahead of second-place finisher Keith Turner. Agostini also won the 350cc race, with the other classes being won by the following riders: 250cc – Silvio Grassetti (MZ), 125cc – Angel Nieto (Derbi), 50cc – Jan de Vries (Kreidler).

The last occasion that a Grand Prix event took place at the Salz-burgring circuit was in 1994, when Mick Doohan won the 500cc race with a race average speed in excess of 194 km/h.

Due to the high-speed nature of the Salzburgring circuit, and the limited amount of run-off provided, it was considered too dangerous for continued use in Grand Prix racing.

A total of 86 Grand Prix races for solo motorcycles have been held in Austria since 1971 as follows: MotoGP™ – 3, 500cc – 24, 350cc – 10, Moto2™ – 3, 250cc – 16, Moto3™ – 3, 125cc – 23, 80cc – 3, 50cc – 1.

The current Red Bull Ring has hosted two previous Grand Prix events prior to 2016 – in 1996 and 1997, when named the A1-Ring.

Honda won the 500cc races held at the A1-Ring in both 1996 and 1997, with Alex Criville and Mick Doohan. Before 2016, Valentino Rossi was the only current rider to have previously raced at this circuit in a Grand Prix event.

Rossi’s third-place finish in the 125cc race in Austria in 1996 was his first Grand Prix podium finish. He again finished on the podium in the 125cc race in Austria in 1997, this time in second place just 0.004 seconds behind Noboru Ueda.

Ducati have taken the three MotoGP™ wins at the Red Bull Ring since 2016, the first of them came from pole position with An-drea Iannone, the second with Andrea Dovizioso in 2017 and the

third with Jorge Lorenzo last year.In 2016 in Austria, Andrea Iannone won for the first time since he moved up to the MotoGP™ class and gave Ducati their first win since Casey Stoner won the Australian GP in 2010. With Andrea Dovizioso crossing the line in second, this was the first one-two finish in a MotoGP™ race for Ducati since the Australian GP in 2007, won by Casey Stoner from Loris Capirossi.

Honda have qualified on pole position over the last two year at the Red Bull Ring, both times with Marc Marquez.

The Red Bull Ring is the only track on the current calendar where Marc Marquez has never won in the premier class.

With Jorge Lorenzo’s third place in 2016 is Yamaha’s best result at the track. Norick Abe and Luca Cadalora also finished third in 1996 and 1997, respectively in the 500cc races held at the A1-Ring.

The Austrian race in 2016 was the first time that Italian riders riding Italian bikes took 1-2 in the premier class since the Finn-ish 500cc GP at Imatra in 1972 won by Giacomo Agostini from teammate Alberto Pagani, both riding MV Agustas.

The average speed of the MotoGP™ race in Austria in 2016 was 182.401 km/h. This was the highest average speed for a GP race since Mick Doohan won the 500cc German Grand Prix in 1994 at the Hockenheim circuit at an average speed of 203.8 km/h. Last year in Austria, the average speed was 182.827 km/h.

In 2017, Cal Crutchlow finished the Austrian Grand Prix in 15th place and crossed the line just 28.096 seconds behind race win-ner Andrea Dovizioso, which was the closest top 15 of all-time in a full-length premier class Grand Prix at the time. Incredibly, this record is now in tenth place on the list of the closest top 15s in the class, behind Mugello earlier this year.

The three Moto2™ races that have taken place at the Red Bull Ring have been won by three different riders: Johann Zarco (2016), Franco Morbidelli (2017) and Francesco Bagnaia (2018). Zarco and Bagnaia won after qualifying one pole position.

The three Moto3™ races that have taken place in Austria have been won by two different riders: Joan Mir on bikes from two dif-ferent manufacturers: KTM (2016), his first Grand Prix win from pole position, and Honda (2017), and Marco Bezzecchi (2018), from pole position.

Grand Prix racing in Austria

300 –In Brno, Valentino Rossi finished in sixth place, scoring points for the 300th time since he stepped up to the premier class of Grand Prix racing in 2000.

125 –The win for Marc Marquez at the Czech GP was the 125th time he has been on the podium in his Grand Prix career. Only five riders have been on the podium on more occasions in Grand Prix racing.

97 – At the Czech GP, Andrea Dovizioso stood on the podium for the 97th in his Grand Prix career, one less than Jim Redman and two less than Loris Capirossi.

35 – Marc Marquez’ win at the Czech GP is his 35th after qualifying on pole position.

34 – With Aron Canet, Alex Marquez and Marc Marquez, this is the second hat-track win for Spain this season (along with Barcelona) and the 34th overall in 125cc/Moto3™, 250cc/Moto2™ and 500cc/MotoGP™.

33 – Since the opening Grand Prix in Qatar, 33 different riders have stood on the podium across all GP classes for the second successive year. Only Marc Marquez, with nine podium finishes, has finished on the podium more than six times in the opening ten Grands Prix of the season.

MotoGP™ Facts and Stats

Marc Marquez’s win at the Czech GP was his 35th win in the pre-mier class after qualifying on pole position. 46 of his 50 wins in the class came after qualifying within the top 3.

Marc Marquez’ win at Brno was the seventh time that he had won at any circuit in the MotoGP™ class after qualifying on pole po-sition and leading across the line on every lap along with Jerez (2014), Austin (2014, 2016, 2018), Termas de Rio Hondo (2019) and Germany (2019).

Marc Marquez has failed to score points only three times since the Catalan GP last year (Australia and Valencia in 2018, and Austin this season). Over the last 19 races he has finished, he has always been on the podium and finished third only once, in Brno last year.

This is Marc Marquez’ seventh successive podium finish. This is a podium sequence that he has bettered three times before in a single season since he stepped up to MotoGP™: 2013 and 2014 (10 successive podium finishes), and 2018 (nine successive po-dium finishes), each time on his way to clinching the title.

Overall, this is Marc Marquez’ ninth podium finish this season so far. Since 2010, he has always stood on the podium at least nine times in any season. His lowest number of podium finishes was nine back in 2015.

Following the Czech GP, Marc Marquez has 210 points, which is the second-highest points accumulated after the opening ten ra-ces by Marquez in the MotoGP™ class. 2014 was the highest, when he had won the ten opening races and accumulated 250 points.

With his brother Alex winning in Moto2™, this is the sixth time both of them won on the same day along with France, Catalunya and Germany this year, and Catalunya and Assen back in 2014 when both were on their way to winning the title in Moto3™ and MotoGP™.

Andrea Dovizioso finished in second place in Brno, which was his 97th podium finish in his Grand Prix career, one less than six-time World Champion Jim Redman.

Jack Miller crossed the line in third place in Germany, which is his third podium finish in the MotoGP™ class and the second this sea-son so far.

Jack Miller is now leading the Independent Team rider classifi-cation, eight points ahead of Cal Crutchlow and ten ahead Fabio Quartararo.

In Brno, Valentino Rossi finished in sixth place, scoring points for the 300th time since he stepped up to the premier class of Grand Prix racing in 2000.

The Red Bull Ring is the only circuit on the current Grand Prix ca-lendar, along with Buriram, where Valentino Rossi has not had a podium finish in the premier class.

Valentino Rossi has, however, finished on the podium in the class at 26 different circuits. Rossi will be aiming to finish within the top 3 in Austria to equal the record of Mick Doohan of finishing on the podium at most different circuits in the premier class.

Only two riders have now scored points in all ten of the MotoGP™ races in 2019: Danilo Petrucci and Pol Espargaro. The last time Pol Espargaro failed to score any points was in Malaysia last year when he retired from the race.

At the Czech GP, Fabio Quartararo finished in seventh place and he is still leading the fight for the Rookie of the Year with 76 points ahead Joan Mir (39 points), who crashed out in Brno, Miguel Oli-veira (18) and Francesco Bagnaia (15).

The only two of the four rookies in the MotoGP™ class this year to have previously won at the Red Bull Ring in any of the smaller classes are Joan Mir, in Moto3™ in both 2016 and 2017, and Fran-cesco Bagnaia last year in Moto2™.

However, Miguel Oliveira has stood on the podium in Austria, finis-hing second last year in Moto2™.

On Friday at the Austrian GP, Andrea Iannone, who failed to score any points in Brno finishing in 17th place, will be celebrating his 30th birthday.

At the Austrian GP, Cal Crutchlow and Maverick Viñales are sche-duled to make the 150th start of their Grand Prix career.

In Brno, Alex Marquez won for the fifth time of the season. This is Alex Marquez’ eighth win in the Moto2™ class, equalling Francesco Bagnaia, Franco Morbidelli and Andrea Iannone.

Since 2012, the rider who won at least five Moto2™ races during the season went on to clinch the title. The last rider who won more than five races without clinching the title at the end of the year was Marc Marquez back in 2011.

The podium for Alex Marquez at the Czech GP was the 100th for the Marc VDS team in Grand Prix racing (including MotoE™) and the 97th in Moto2™.

Alex Marquez is now leading the Championship with a 33-point advantage over Tom Lüthi; this is the biggest margin at this stage of the season since 2016 when Johann Zarco led with a 34-point advantage over Alex Rins after the Austrian GP.

Fabio Di Giannantonio, who won his first GP race in Moto3™ last year in Brno, crossed the line in second place at the Czech GP, which is the first podium of his rookie season in the Moto2™ class.

With Fabio Di Giannantonio, this is the best result for a rookie in the Moto2™ class since Joan Mir was also second in Australia last season.

This is the fourth time Speed Up have had at least five podium finishes in a single season in Moto2™ since the introduction of the class in 2010, along with that year, when tey had nine podium fi-nishes, and both 2012 and 2015, when they had five.

In addition, it was the 31st overall podium finish for Speed Up in Moto2™ since the introduction of the class back in 2010.

Jorge Navarro crossed the line in fourth place at the Czech GP as the second-placed Speed Up rider. This is the second time there were two Speed Up riders within the top four in Moto2™, along with Aragon in 2010 with Andrea Iannone and Gabor Talmasci.

Rookie Enea Bastianini finished the race in third place, which also his best result of his rookie season in Moto2™. He is still leading the fight for the Rookie of the Year with 74 points ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio (57 points).

With Fabio Di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini, this is the first time there were two rookie riders on the podium in the Moto2™ class since the 2014 Italian GP with Luis Salom and Jonas Folger.

Only two riders have scored points in all ten of the Moto2™ races in 2019: Luca Marini and Marcel Schrötter.

two-point margin between Gabor Talmacsi and Hector Faubel af-ter the German GP.

Lorenzo Dalla Porta, who started from 17th on the grid, crossed the line in second at the Czech GP as the highest-placed Honda rider. This is Dalla Porta’s 11th podium finish in the Moto3™ class, one less than Efren Vazquez.

Tony Arbolino finished third at Brno, which is his fourth podium since the opening race in Qatar as well as the fourth in his Grand Prix career.

Only one rider has now scored points in all ten of the Moto3™ race in 2019: Aron Canet.

None of the current riders currently competing in the Moto3™ class have won in the class at the Red Bull Ring, neither have they previously been on the podium at this track.

Moto3™ Facts and Stats

Marcel Schrötter has scored points in the last 14 successive Moto2™ races. The last time he failed to score any points was in Thailand last year when he crashed out on the opening lap.

None of the current riders currently competing in the Moto2™ class have won in the class at the Red Bull Ring. However, Alex Marquez (2017), Tom Lüthi (2017) and Luca Marini (2018) have previously stood on the podium at this track.

Luca Marini will be celebrating his 22nd birthday on qualifying day at the Red Bull Ring, while Brad Binder will be celebrating his 24th birthday on race day.
