TWENTY YEARS AGO APRIL 24, 1997 Susan Fox and Rich Linegar from the Wild- wood Tree Farm of Gothenburg and Susan Stickney and Jack Cotton from the McPherson County Tree Board planted some new trees at the Miller Park in Tryon for Arbor Day. A North Platte man, Jon W. Wilhite, age 36, was killed in an accident late Tuesday night, April 15, when the southbound ve- hicle he was driving went off a curve at the foot of Russell Hill on Highway 97 in Tryon. Sarah Jayne Schultheiss is in the Senior Spotlight this week. THIRTY YEARS AGO APRIL 23, 1987 Cindy Dobbins, daugh- ter of Ron and Lorna Dob- bins of Tryon, was one of 18 University of Nebraska at Lincoln members who attended the National Col- legiate 4-H Conference at Ohio State University. A large crowd attended the sale of the household goods and real estate of Leo Cash in Tryon, Satur- day. Mike Waits and Betty Daigger were in the Sen- ior Spotlight this week. FORTY YEARS AGO APRIL 21, 1977 Janelle Snyder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Snyder of Sutherland, has been chosen as the Girls State Delegate by the American Legion Auxil- iary of Tryon. Named al- ternate was Teana Bullington. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hig- gins of Halsey, were an- nouncing the engagement of their daughter, Melanie Diane to Charles Emory Daly, son of Mrs. Evelyn Daly and the late Emory Daly. A June wedding is being planned. McPherson County High School took second in its division April 15 at the Scholastic Contest at Chadron State College. Winners from Tryon were Scott Brouwer and Rex Kemp. FIFTY YEARS AGO APRIL 20, 1967 Tom Kemp and Lloyd Connell put down a well for Don Neal on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Seifer and Dean attended the senior class play in Sutherland Friday evening. Their daughter Connie is a member of the senior class there. The Mart Mather’s, Taft Haddy’s and Tom Ellis’s attended the 40th wed- ding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Shepherd in Sutherland Sunday. SIXTY YEARS AGO APRIL 25,1957 A trip to Colorado begin- ning Saturday and ending on Tuesday has been scheduled for the senior class. They plan to see the ice capades during the trip. Those who plan to take cars are Harold Neal, Andrew Carroll and Mrs. Nellie Miller. Mr. Andrew Carroll, teacher and coach at Tryon, received a bad cut on his right hand Monday from a broken window glass which boke while he was attempting to close a window of the high school building. Rev. B.D. Hunn came home Monday and left again Tuesday morning for his evangelistic work. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Power and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Jameson were sponsors for the high school roller skating party at North Platte Tuesday night. SEVENTY YEARS AGO APRIL 24, 1947 On April 20, 1947, Miss Evelyn Thompson, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Thompson of Flats, and Mr. Robert Shimmin, son of R.A. Shimmin of Tron, were united in marriage at Center Valley Church near Flats. Miss Evelyn Carrell and Ted Correll of Tryon, re- ceived diplomas from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis, on April 24. Miss Joan Mathers of Flats also received a diploma. Don Abel of Lena, un- derwent a major opera- tion in a hospital in North Platte last week. Bud Pinkerton is carrying the Lena mail for Don at pres- ent. EIGHTY YEARS AGO APRIL 22, 1937 A dust storm all day Monday was climaxed that evening by an April shower that brought a trace of moisture and brought down tons of mud which smeared things up generally. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wade and small son expected to leave this week for Logan County where they will make their home. Mr. Wade is employed on the Platt farm where about 600 acres of corn will be farmed this season. NINETY YEARS AGO APRIL 21, 1927 A total of 69 seventh and eighth grade students took examinations in McPherson County this spring. Mona Melvin was the student coming the longest distance. The fol- lowing earned the high- est grades: June Stoddard, bookkeeping; Mona Melvin, mental arith- metic; Dorothy Miller, physiology; Helen Van Meter, bookkeeping; Mar- jorie Faulkner, reading and mental arithmetic. Miss Ella Baker and Mr. Elmer Higle of Rydal, Kansas were united in marriage April 6 at the Baptist parsonage at Bel- lville, Kansas. The groom is well known and re- spected, having grown up in this community. Monday, April 24 - Polish sausage, sauerkraut, scal- loped potatoes and green beans. Tuesday, April 25 - Grilled chicken breast, mashed potatoes and corn. Wednesday, April 26 - Barbecue sandwich, baked beans and French fries. Thursday, April 27 - Sal- isbury steak, mashed po- tatoes and peas. Friday, April 28 - Fish sandwich, Au Gratin pota- toes and beets. Amy and her husband, Will, live north of Tin Camp, where he ranches. They have three girls, Megan, age 14, Josie, age 12, and Hazel, age 19 months. Amy was elementary librarian at Tryon Schools. She also worked at Hershey Public Schools as a para- educator. She served as a substi- tute librarian and discovered how much she enjoyed being a librar- ian. Originally from North Platte, Amy attended college at Mid- Plains, Chadron and Kearney, where she studied early educa- tion. The library in Sutherland has many new books, free Wi-Fi, DVD movies, audio books and more. Coffman is new librarian at Sutherland Amy Coffman at her post as the new Sutherland Librarian. Let’s go find some eggs! The Easter Bunny was tricky and even hid eggs in the trees as Leyton Connell found out. The McPherson County High School freshmen class held their annual Easter Egg Hunt for the Tryon area Pre-Kinder- garten through fifth graders. This is their an- nual community service project, and is overseen by sponsor, Mrs. Lisa Vasa. The students hid dozens of eggs in the Tryon Park and the youngsters had fun finding the hidden eggs checking out all of the goodies inside. Amy Coffman is the new librar-ian at the Maxine White Public Li-brary in Sutherland. Amy and herhusband, Will, live north of TinCamp, where he ranches. Theyhave three girls, Megan, age 14,Josie, age 12, and Hazel, age 19months.

Amy was elementary librarian atTryon Schools. She also worked atHershey Public Schools as a para-educator. She served as a substi-tute librarian and discovered howmuch she enjoyed being a librar-ian.

Originally from North Platte,Amy attended college at Mid-Plains, Chadron and Kearney,where she studied early educa-tion.

The Easter Bunny was tricky and even hid eggs in thetrees as Leyton Connell found out.

The McPherson CountyHigh School freshmenclass held their annualEaster Egg Hunt for theTryon area Pre-Kinder-garten through fifthgraders. This is their an-nual community serviceproject, and is overseenby sponsor, Mrs. LisaVasa.

The students hid dozensof eggs in the Tryon Parkand the youngsters hadfun finding the hiddeneggs checking out all ofthe goodies inside.
