Standing up for those left behind2

For our agency and our community, 2013 has been a better year than the years just before. The economy has picked up, more people are working and the difficulties of our severe economic downturn are beginning to ease. And yet, there are people left behind. There are elderly people who need increased support, whether to manage a bewildering range of medical issues or to retain their connection to our tradition; there are children of immigrant families who struggle with language and learning; there are parents who cannot afford to feed their children or themselves; there are men and women seeking the connection and sustenance of community.

For them, and for the devoted volunteers and staff that are the heart of this agency, JFS stands as a singular resource to ensure and maintain the well-being of our Metrowest community.

JFS stands up for those left behind.

Marc Jacobs Lester Schindel ChiefExecutiveOfficer President

Each year JFS serves over 4,000 people with social, health and community programs designed to enhance their lives. More than 80% of the funding that supports these services is generated by our Annual Fund and contributions from individuals, families and foundations. Government sources underwrite the rest. We turn to you so that we can fulfill our mission and help alleviate suffering, enhance lives, and assist people in need in our community.

ENDOWMENT

This year we took an enormous step toward assuring the continuity of programs, the ability to innovate and the flexibility to respond to our community’s ever-changing needs with the creation of the JFS/Metrowest Endowment Fund. The springboard was a magnificent foundation gift which is the first step in building a secure financial future for all our endeavors.

Endowments are built by direct gifts and by creating gift intentions large and small, each one demonstrating commitment and connection to JFS and our Metrowest community and concern for future generations.

SERVING COMMUNITY—SUPPORTED BY COMMUNITY

Page 4: STANDING UP ANNUAL REPORTjfsmw.com/PDF/JFS_ANNUALREPORT2013_FINALweb.pdf · 2 Standing up for those left behind For our agency and our community, 2013 has been a better year than

SUSTAINING OUR ELDERS

• Patient Navigator—trained volunteers who accompany seniors to medical appointments

• Geriatric care management• Friendly visitors • Homecare • Chronic disease management • Healthy Partners

Focusing on healthy aging, JFS programs taught hundreds women and men, most residents of low-income housing in Framingham, to lower blood pressure or control diabetes by improving nutrition, exercising more and managing stress. JFS’ Elder Services Team helps over 1,700 elders age in place at home in a safe and dignified manner.

OUR PROGRAMS serve thousands of people throughout Metrowest. Most programs are in

schools, senior care facilities, playgrounds, faith organizations, physicians’ offices and public settings, all serving the goals of:

STRENGTHENING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

• Adoption Choices• Reducing Achievement Gaps for students at

Framingham’s Wilson School• Girls for Success (Haifa, Israel)• New American Services

Reducing Achievement Gaps offers reading, math and science tutoring and support to over one-hundred elementary school students and family members, most from immigrant families. JFS provides food staples and fresh produce to many of these households. JFS Adoption Services has united over 900 parents and children since 1982. 150 immigrants settled in Metrowest through JFS New American Services.

MAKING ENDS MEET

• Lucy and Joe’s Food Pantry• Family assistance • Healthy Harvest • Counseling and referral • Cash assistance

Family Assistance—nutrition and supplementary support—helps many Metrowest families. Food staples are distributed to Wilson families, supplemented by a Weekend Nutrition

program. Healthy Harvest provides fresh produce. Lucy and

Joe’s Food Pantry is a resource for the broader community, and a starting point for counseling and referral to state and local agencies. Over 1,000 served in these programs.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

• Kesher 13• Jewish Family Network• Caring Community Resource Network (CCRN)

Kesher 13 brought teens preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah at five Metrowest synagogues to area nursing homes and assisted living facilities to lead Shabbat services, joining the generations and bringing the warmth of Shabbat to seniors. And together with the Jewish Community Centers, JFS has facilitated Jewish Family Network, scheduling large and small events to build Jewish connections for hundreds of young families. CCRN provides consultation around difficult issues of illness, grief/bereavement, and caring for aging parents. Over 800 served in these programs.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:

PATIENT NAVIGATOR

Patient Navigator is an innovative JFS program piloted this year, which has trained 35 volunteers to accompany seniors to medical appointments, teaching them about the needs of frail elders, about communication skills and about how to navigate the medical system. Accompanied by Patient Navigators, frail elders have made hundreds of visits to appointments this year. The average Patient Navigator client is 83 years old and lives alone. The program, is being expanded for the coming year with a generous grant from MetroWest Health Foundation Framingham Union Grants Panel.

“The doctor paid more attention to me and gave me more time,” Edith S., a 93 year old resident of

Shillman House wrote to us after a

patient navigator accompanied her

to her last appointment. “She also wanted to see me sooner for my next appointment.”

• Patient Navigators who accompanied seniors to medical appointments

• Tutors who worked with Wilson School elementary students to help boost their reading, science and math skills. Others provided ESL lessons for elders living in senior housing.

• Development callers who reached out across the community to raise the funds that sustain the work of this agency.

• Friendly visitors who helped ease the isolation of Metrowest elders.

• Produce packers who assembled bags of fresh vegetables for Wilson School families.

• Event volunteers who worked tirelessly on auction, tribute book and décor for our annual Seize the Dream event.

• Shabbat service leaders who bring the joy of Shabbat observance to seniors in nursing homes.

OUR VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers from Horizon Technology packed Thanksgiving bags at the Wilson Elementary School.JFS started in 1979 as a volunteer agency,

and volunteers are at the core of all that we do. Over 200 volunteers gave thousands of hours to support our community this year. They included:

JFS Family Assistance was the safety net for more than 300 families this year. For most, life had been good, and then the unexpected happened, and they were vulnerable. People lost jobs, were divorced, confronted health and mental health issues, and were suddenly in crisis. Skilled counselors at JFS Family Assistance focus first on immediate needs—groceries, gas money, housing, and overdue utility bills. Then they offer intensive case management and referrals to food stamps, housing assistance, and other basic needs.

“Life was fine, and then the bottom dropped out.” Sheila was

shattered when her husband left

her and their two young daughters

and moved away. Unable to pay the

rent, she returned to her parents’

home. JFS is providing assistance,

enabling her to buy gas and get

to job interviews, apply for food

stamps, and find affordable housing.

Tutoring, family assistance, weekend nutrition, healthy harvest, parent outreach and training and a food pantry, all coordinated by professional and volunteer staff, support children and their families in the poorest and highest-crime neighborhood of Framingham. The goal is to improve the academic performance of children facing multiple challenges and help them build a bright future.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:

RELEASING UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES AT THE

WILSON SCHOOL“The term ‘inner-city problems’ makes you think of sprawling city slums, but these problems affect smaller urban centers too. Poverty, hunger and academic achievement gaps are huge issues in the lives of the children at Wilson. Complex problems demand complex responses. We run a settlement house in a school.”
