The Month of Saints and Souls Part IV, Our Friends Above and Alongside “Praise and glory come before You / from the mouths of the Apostles From the Prophets too, most worthy / of our praise and adulation! Martyrs in their white-robed glory / shed their blood for Your Son, Jesus As that faith enriches Your Church / To all corners of creation!” These words taken from the “Te Deum” will soon resound throughout this church building as the Eucharistic procession winds through the aisles with pomp and glory. The trumpets will blast, the drums and bells will shout and the organ and choir will sing out while the voices of the faithful chant this ancient hymn, on this the feast of St. Cecelia, the patron saint of music. These things we hear on one level. In my mind I imagine something else takes place as well. I always imagine the participa-tion of all the Saints and Souls in our midst as well! I imagine all the Apostles coming down from the reredos (high altar) along with all those from their pedestals perched along the procession route. Augustine touches the heart to the Blessed Sacrament and Margaret Mary touches the heart of Jesus. Joseph and Mary join hands and accompany their Son as a family unit as they together walk with us through the little town of Cleveland. Francis and Clare and Anthony and Dominic clang the tambourines and weep for joy while Agnes and Elizabeth share their crowns of glory with the King. Stanislaus leads his compatriots Casimir, Stanislaus Kostka and Hedwig as part of the royal entourage while Maxymillian is freed from his cell to embrace the Savior Who lived with him in that cold basement preparing to be nailed to his own cross. The two Theresa’s dust off their Car-melite veils and gaze upon their one true love. John Nepomucene sings again with his tongue while John Paul invites us all to join together in his strong deep voice as he walks full of strength and vigor before the monstrance bearing his dearest friend. The friends alongside us are not only the familiar faces of our neighbors sharing in this celestial vision. Every vacant space holds a soul who once inhabited a space in our lives and in this very building. We see those who brought their Easter baskets to be blessed and those who donated the pussy willows. We see those who decorated the altars and who preached from the pulpits. We see those who sold raffle tickets in the vestibule and who pinched pierogi in the social center. We see those who cooked for us and prayed for us, laughed with us and cried with us. They all loved us and they forever earned a spot at this great party at their Baptism. Many still need us to pray on their behalf to fully embrace Jesus. Others are already able to intercede on our own behalf while we negotiate the rocky road up to Calvary and the feast it gained. This day, let us remember and join with all the saints and all the souls as we adore and worship the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who reigns forever and ever! Hallelujah!

THE SAINTS SHOW US CHRIST

We recently celebrated a string of fascinating women saints beginning with Saint Frances Xavier (Mother) Cabrini on November 13th, Saint Gertrude the Great on November 16th, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary on November 17th, and Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne on November 18th. Each of these holy women is special in her way, and I enjoyed

learning more about all of these women whom the Church has recognized for their exemplary lives of Christian virtues. Two of these saints became missionaries to our own country of the United States. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini – more popularly known in the United States as “Mother Cabrini” – was certainly an amazing woman for what she accomplished in her life. From the time she was a child listening to her father read stories about missionaries, she had dreamed of becoming a missionary. She founded her religious congregation, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, in Italy, and she was persuaded by Pope Leo XIII to serve immigrants (primarily Italians) in America. By the time she died in 1917 in Chicago, at the age of 67, she had established 67 missions where her sisters ministered to those in need in cities of the United States, Italy, France, England, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Nicaragua. In 1946, she became the first citizen of the United States to be canonized a saint. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne became a religious at the time of the French Revolution. Her convent was forcibly dissolved by the revolutionaries and she returned to her family home to live a type of religious life of prayer and charitable works as best as she could. She was able to re-enter religious life in the time of Napoleon, and then was later able to fulfill a dream of hers by coming to the Louisiana Territory of America in 1818 as a missionary among the Native Americans. She founded the first Catholic school for Native American girls along with other missions, mostly in the area of Missouri and Kansas. She had trouble learning the language of the Potawatomi Tribe she was ministering to in Kansas, so she spent most of her time there in prayer. The Potawatomi referred to her by a name in their language meaning: “Woman-Who-Prays-Always.” She died at the age of 83 in 1852 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988. She is buried in St. Charles, Missouri. Every saint was a unique person as is each one of us. There has never been anyone exactly like you before and there never will be again. You are irreplaceable in God’s plan of Creation! The saints are inspiring examples for us of people who became the best people that they could be, and that is what we should also become in our own Christian journeys. Miesiąc świętych i dusz czyśćcowych

Część IV: Św. Teresa od Dzieciątka Jezus (1)

Po refleksjach poświęconych świętym, którzy byli biskupami, dzisiejsza jest poświęcona św. Teresie od Dzieciątka Jezus, często zwanej również „Małą Tereską” dla odróżnienia od Teresy od Jezusa, zwanej „Wielką Teresą”.

Św. Teresa jest szczególną Świętą, bardzo lubianą przez wielu, przez ludzi prostych i wykształconych, przez ludzi w sile wieku, przez starców i dzieci. Do dzisiaj pamiętam katechezy, których tematem była „mała Święta” i zainteresowanie dzieci słuchających historię Tereski.

Największym odkryciem św. Teresy z Lisieux była „mała droga”. „Mała droga” to droga do świętości. Św. Teresę nie pociągały przykłady wielkich świętych, którzy odznaczali się wielkimi czynami, wielkimi umartwieniami i pokutą, i którzy przez swoją niezwykłość stawali się wręcz nieludzcy i wydawało się jej, że jest rzeczą niemożliwą naśladowanie ich. Św. Teresa pragnęła takiej świętości, którą można praktykować w każdej sytuacji życiowej i przez każdego. Na pewno nie był to minimalizm, ale odwrotnie, było to pragnienie rzeczy wielkich, a właściwie wszystkiego.

W swoim „Dzienniczku Duszy” św. Teresa opisuje wydarzenie z jej dzieciństwa. Jedna z jej sióstr, Leonia, uznała, że jest za duża, by bawić się lalką. Wsadziła ją więc do koszyka i z wraz z jej sukienkami i innymi drobiazgami przyszła do jej dwóch młodszych sióstr i zwróciła się do nich: „Wybierajcie, daję wam to wszystko!” Celina wyciągnąwszy rękę, wzięła kłębek jedwabnych sznurków, który się jej spodobał. Po chwili zastanowienia i Tereska wyciągnęła rękę mówiąc: — ,,Ja wybieram wszystko!” i bez żadnych ceremonii zabrała cały koszyk.

Ta jej cecha, czyli pragnienie wszystkiego, pozostała jej na zawsze. Nosiła w sobie wielkie pragnienia: pragnęła być kapłanem, misjonarzem, męczennikiem, umierających w obronie Kościoła i wiary. Ale nie jednym kapłanem, misjonarzem, męczennikiem, ale wszystkimi, nie tylko w jednym czasie, ale we wszystkich epokach. Jej pragnienia były przeogromne - pragnęła być wszystkim dla Jezusa. Jej pragnienia, jak pisze, były dla niej prawdziwym męczeństwem. Szukając odpowiedzi czytała Pismo św. i w Pierwszym Liście św. Pawła do Koryntian znalazła ją. Tak o tym pisze w swoim „Dzienniczku”:

„Przeczytałam tam (w 12-tym i 13-tym rozdziale tego Listu) w pierwszym rzędzie, że wszyscy nie mogą być apostołami, prorokami, doktorami itd., że Kościół składa się z różnych członków i że oko nie może być zarazem ręką... Odpowiedź była jasna, nie zaspokajała jednak moich pragnień, nie dawała mi ukojenia... (…) Niezmordowanie czytałam dalej i to oto zdanie przyniosło mi ulgę: "Poszukajcie gorliwie DARÓW NAJDOSKONALSZYCH, ale ja wam ukażę drogę przewyższającą wszystko". I Apostoł wyjaśnia, że wszystkie dary, nawet te NAJDOSKONALSZE, są niczym bez MIŁOŚCI... że MIŁOŚĆ jest DROGĄ NAJDOSKONALSZĄ, która najpewniej prowadzi do Boga.”

Good for another 30 years! You may have noticed that the pipe organ had been out of commission for the past two weeks. Well, now that the main bellows have been re-leathered, we are back in business for another 30 years. Pictured above is James Leek, of the Leek Organ Company of Oberlin, Ohio, the person in charge with the ongoing restoration of our pipe organ which was installed after the tornado of 1909. As it approaches its 100th birthday over the next few years we hope to get more work completed to ensure its life for another hundred and beyond!

REVERSE RAFFLE WINNERS What a wonderful evening last Saturday as over 120 people joined in the Reverse raffle to benefit the Fr. William Gulas Scholarship fund. The winners of the big prize split the pot with $300 each: Matt Zielenski, David Krakowski, Ed Chengery, Bonnye Albrecht, Ryan Hagler. The winner of the flat-screen TV was Mike Adams. The event made more than $2,700 to help parishioners with children in our elementary school. Many thanks to Denise Siemborski and the workers on her committee. The real winners, of course, are our children who have the benefit of a solid Catholic education.

PARISH FINANCIAL AUDIT COMPLETE Last Spring, all parishes in the diocese were informed that there will be a systematic external audit of the finances of each parish. This is different from the review of the parish financial statements, which is sent to the diocese every July and reviewed by the Diocesan Finance Office. This past summer, the report from Saint Stanislaus was accepted without any comment. The external audit for Saint Stanislaus has already been conducted in two parts, in October and November. The auditors will send a preliminary report by the end of December and make a final presentation to the Parish Finance Council at their January meeting.

ADVENT GIVING TREEADVENT GIVING TREEADVENT GIVING TREEADVENT GIVING TREE To help others that may be less fortunate experience the joy of Christmas, this year we will have an "Advent Giving Tree" for the children in our Head Start program. The "Giving Tree" will be set up in the rear of the church beginning November 21st. On the tree will be ornament tags, one for each child in our Head Start program. The gift tags will indicate if the child is a boy or girl, and their age. Please choose an ornament (or two) from the tree. Purchase a gift for the child (no used items please), wrap your gift, and securely attach the ornament tag to the gift. A suggestion for a gift may be winter gloves, hat, scarf, socks, etc. In addition, you may want to include a small toy as well. Bring your wrapped gift back to the church and place it under the giving tree no later than no later than no later than no later than Sunday, December 6thSunday, December 6thSunday, December 6thSunday, December 6th. We will then distribute them to the Head Start children on behalf of the parishioners of St. Stanislaus. If you are unable to purchase a gift, cash donations will be accepted. THANKSGIVING FOR THE POOR As you settle in with family and friends to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, will you be able to say you’ve done something practical for those who cannot feast, let alone even have a decent meal? ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski. The Mill Creek area (currently located at Broadway Avenue and Warner Road) was the chief entertainment and business district of Newburgh Township. This was the southern boundary of Newburgh. Mill Creek is a tributary of the Cuyahoga River. The stream dropped more than forty feet and formed three water falls. These falls still exist at Broadway Avenue and Warner Road. A sawmill, gristmill, carding mill, and flour mill were built to take advantage of Mill Creek. Two hotels were built to handle the influx of workers, visitors, and businessmen in 1840. One was the Cataract House at East 88 Street and Broadway Avenue. The other was the Eagle House at Miles Road and Broadway Avenue. The original falls at Mill Creek were reoriented in the early 1900’s because the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks were relocated.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL — OZANAM CENTER VOLUNTEER HOURS

What one parish has a hard time doing alone, several parishes working together can do well. A very practical expression of this is the shared outreach to the poor of our community, situated in a facility at Holy Name Parish. It is called the Ozanam Center, sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Society. The Slavic Village parishes are joined by several suburban parishes in providing volunteers, funds, food, clothing, and other essentials to the poor right in our own neighborhood community. This outreach depends on the compassion of the disciples of Christ. Very practically, we are all called to share some measure of our own goods. But we also need to share some of our time, if we are able. Participating parishes share the staffing duties during the open times on Saturdays from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM, each parish taking one weekend a month. The next weekend for saint Stanislaus is Saturday, December 12. Can you give a hand as well as a hand-out? Think — and pray — about whether God might be calling you to spend part of your Saturday doing a labor of love. Last month, only three parishioners came. Can we do better for Christmas?

CityMusic PROVIDES FREE MUSIC LESSONS In addition to bringing beautiful orchestral music to our community for free several times a year, CityMusic Cleveland is continuing its second year of providing free music lessons to Slavic Village kids. The program is open to 4th and 5th graders, and the lessons are held in the Saint Stanislaus School building on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:15 PM.

“RAGTIME” PERRFORMANCE AT MAGNIFICAT HIGH SCHOOL

The Performing Arts Department of Magnificat High School presents Ragtime, the popular, early 1900s-themed Broadway musical, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 20-22 and 27-29. ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING PRAYER SERVICE Join with our neighbors and friends from other churches in the annual Ecumenical Thanksgiving Prayer service, to be held this year on Monday, November 23 at 7:00 PM at the Broadway Christian Church, 5920 Engel Avenue. TETELESTAI VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Each year during Lent, a dedicated troupe of believers presents a dramatic contemporary musical portrayal of the last week in Jesus’ life. The production vividly and movingly portrays his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, his trial, crucifixion, and resurrection. Although different churches take turns hosting this wonderful event, members of surrounding churches are encouraged to help with the various committees such as Publicity, Ushers, Reception, and Outreach. One of the host parishes for Lent 2010 is our neighbor, St. John Nepomucene. If you are interested in signing up to help one of these committees, please call their parish office at 641-8444.
