Summer is Stewardship of Leisure

“Everything we have is a gift from God”

Gracious God, So often you attempt to offer us a peaceful awareness of your presence. It is always there, but we do not slow down enough to become aware of it. Help us to slow down and appreciate this gift, and come to a deeper understanding of the movement of your Spirit in our lives. Help us recognize those moments when you rescued us, healed us, and reconciled us. Increase our trust in you, show us how to reach beyond ourselves to minister to others, and give us the wisdom to be better stewards and sacraments of your presence each day. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Respect Life…

Blessed Pope John Paul II discussed radical secularism almost two decades

ago when he visited Baltimore and stated, “The chal-lenge facing you, dear friends, is to increase people’s awareness of the importance for society of religious freedom; to defend that freedom against those who would take religion out of the public domain and estab-lish secularism as America’s official faith…And it is vitally necessary, for the very survival of the American experience, to transmit to the next generation the pre-cious legacy of religious freedom and the convictions which sustain it.”

~ Archbishop William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, Ad-dress “Let Freedom Ring,” given May 24, 2012

ECHOES, Your Parish Newsletter, Needs Your Experience!

Each month, articles are compiled from our staff and parishioners and prepared for publication in ECHOES. The next step is to layout the articles, photos and captions. Here is where your valuable experience and stewardship can help. We are in need of a volunteer to layout ECHOES each month. Do you have experience laying out a publication for an organization, an employer or school? Do you have experience with any kind of publication software? This is a perfect opportunity for someone to volunteer from home. Do you want to know more? Call Pat Spivey in the parish office, 272-4681.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

“Go, you are sent.”

Does the scene of the disciples being sent out two by two bring to mind any other scripture? After the flood, Noah opens the door of the ark and sends his passengers out to renew the face of the earth. Certainly, Jesus has the same purpose. The purpose is fulfilled in your communion in the Body of Christ today, and in your being sent from the Eucharist into the world. The sending is so important that our word “Mass” derives from it. In Latin, the last words of worship are Ite, missa est, which means “Go, you are sent.” From that, people began to call Catholic worship the missa, or in English, the “Mass.” Our English words dismissal, missal, emissary, and mission are all related. We are not sent into the workaday world alone, but in relationship to one another. Some people have acquired the unhappy habit of leaving worship as soon as they receive Communion and therefore miss the prayer, the dismissal, and the solemn blessing that are essential parts of the Mass. The dismissal is a seal on our Communion and reveals its purpose. Thanks be to God! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER FOR THE SAFETY OF SOLDIERS

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the pow-er of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

While we regularly pray at mass for all those who bravely serve our country, we would like to pray for and recognize those who are a part of, or are an extension of our parish family. Please call the parish office with the name, rank, and branch of service.
