Summer is Stewardship of Leisure
“Everything we have is a gift from God”
Embrace both leisure and sabbath. Do not expect leisure to do for you what sabbath can. Unlike leisure, sabbath is celebrated weekly (as a day of refreshing worship and rest), daily (as a conscious entering into God’s own refreshment; Exodus 31:17) and eternally (as a way of describing salvation in Christ). Leisure and sabbath overlap-worship refreshes and transforms. Some leisure leads to contemplation, but leisure and sabbath are not coex-tensive. We often think we need more leisure when what we need is to enter more deeply into Christ’s sabbath rest (Matthew 11:28).

Facts about Food Insecurity in Guilford County
20% of families in Guilford County live in poverty and the estimated child poverty rate nearly doubled over the last decade to just over 37 percent, which has been a challenge for Guilford County Schools. On an average day, GUM Food Bank distributes emergency food orders to approximately 50 families. This spring and sum-mer, a computer glitch at DSS has kept many families from getting food stamps and local food banks have been overwhelmed. GUM is currently serving 80-90 families each day. Recent food drives have increased in-ventory, however summer is the busiest time for food needs. Besides dried milk and liquid nutritional supple-ments, the Greensboro Urban Ministry Food Bank needs the following staples:
Protein Sources: tuna and salmon, beef stew, Spam, corned beef, peanut butter Vegetables: canned peas, tomatoes, corn, green beans, mixed vegetables Fruits: peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, applesauce Other Items: soups, oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, dried beans, rice
Please place items in our food cart located in the church, no glass jars or perishable food.
BackPack Beginnings, a local non-profit, serves 600 children in 16 schools in Guilford County. St. Pius currently helps feed 25 children who attend Irving Park Elementary, located in our neighborhood. Donations of food and gently used children’s clothing such as coats, hats, gloves, shoes and SMOD clothing items are needed. Call 336 709-9649 for more information on donations.

PRAYER FOR THE SAFETY OF SOLDIERS
Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the pow-er of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
While we regularly pray at mass for all those who bravely serve our country, we would like to pray for and recognize those who are a part of, or are an extension of our parish family. Please call the parish office with the name, rank, and branch of service.
