ST THOMAS THE APOSTLE NEWS
Dear Parents and Guardians, May I take this opportunity to welcome back all the staff and pupils and wish you and your family a very happy 2019. It’s building up to be an extremely busy term with both our Year 12 and 13 students currently in the midst of their mock exams. Year 11s completed their mock exams before Christmas and the results will be discussed at the Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 29th January from 4:00-6:30pm. We know this can be a stressful time so we must all work together to ensure maximum success. I would like to encourage you to please make every effort to attend as this will be the last opportunity to meet all your son’s teachers. Ranking exams for Year 10 students are scheduled for the week beginning 28th January. Parental support in providing a structured and suitable study environment at home is essential. Students have been provided with revision guides so will have plenty of materials to help them prepare. Finally, the deadline for 6th form applications passed on Friday the 21st December. We have had over 400 external applications which clearly shows the growing reputation of our outstanding 6th form. With the large number of students to see, consultations for September 2019 entry will be split for internal and external applicants. Internal students will meet with 6th form staff on Tuesday 22nd January and will have received their appointment time already. External students will be seen at the start of February. Thank you for you continuing support as we look forward to a successful 2019 at STAC.

Students in Year 12 and 13 have now concluded their recent exams. The formal examination process is an important stage to track student process and prepare students for the challenges of A level exams in the summer. Many BTEC students have sat public examinations for selected units and will receive their results in mid-March. As students receive their feedback over coming weeks, parents are encouraged to engage fully in supporting their child to improve areas of weakness and seek support proactively. We look forward to meeting with all students and families at the Sixth Form Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 12th February. The Sixth Form team and the Year 12 & 13 students would also like to wish Miss Pearce all the best as she goes on maternity leave; Miss Rodin and Mr Walter will be joint acting Heads of Sixth Form in her absence. Mr J Walter Joint Acting Head of Sixth Form
The Sixth Form team are delighted to congratulate: Joshua Aboiye, Kun Fang, Natalie Bonsu, David Ayeni and Kyeva Graham for successful applications to the 2019 Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU) Shadowing Scheme. Over 3000 students from across the United Kingdom applied for 300 places which is a tremendous achievement. During the Shadowing Scheme, they will stay in one of the Colleges (halls of residence), and go to lectures, classes and social activities all alongside current Cambridge undergraduates. We know that they will seize this unique opportunity with both hands and we look forward to hearing about their experiences.

Year 12 have more success to celebrate as the following students have all gained places on the prestigious Goldsmiths Progression Scheme: David Ayeni, Kadie Koroma, Samira Begum, Erick Fabrizzio Mendizabal Villarroel, Renée Bennett, Victory Etafo, Samuel Olajugba and Kidus Tesera. It is an excellent scheme that will prepare these pupils for higher education and on successful completion will mean they are eligible for lower entry requirements if they apply to Goldsmiths. They will enhance their critical thinking skills, increase their subject knowledge and go on various cultural visits and summer schools.
We know that they will make the most of this wonderful opportunity and look forward to hearing about their progress. Miss C Rodin Acting Joint Head of Sixth Form

The Rugby Season begins The year 8s kicked off our rugby season with a festival held at Burgess Park, alongside local rugby club Southwark Tigers. Our year 8s, led by Gbolahan Bakare and Tyler Whatle were superb. They played against local schools including Bacons College and Sacred Heart. STAC demonstrated superb control over both of their games, looking after the ball during rucks and carrying the ball especially well. They ended up winning all 3 matches, and the overall tournament. Sahaid Mansaray was the top try scorer, so a big well done must go to him. Southwark Tigers hold FREE training sessions at Burgess Park every Sunday, from 10am – 12.00. If you are interested, please collect a leaflet from PE for further details. Mr J Kliber Head of PE Department

Dear Students, The Autumn term ended with a flourish, with excellent participation in the final event of the year, the Christmas Quiz. The Heads of House hope you all had a wonderful rest over Christmas, and are ready to get back into the swing of things in earnest. Safe to say, we have a lot in store for you in this first Spring term. Every day, while roaming the playground, it is a joy to witness so many of you engaging in hugely competitive games of table tennis. Seldom does one see a vacant table, due to your eagerness to improve your ping-pong skills. In light of this, we have decided to offer four, yes four, table-tennis house events over the next month. See the house notice board for more details. Not only that, but following on from the usually popular MFL dominoes, we have decided to launch a top secret MFL challenge. Your language skills will be tested and stretched that’s for sure, and there will be an array of games to put you all to the test. All languages and abilities are welcome. We all really look forward to seeing you again. Without your dedication and enthusiasm, wonderful moments would not be created and it is with your participation that we help the school community get even stronger.

25 Year 11 students were rewarded with a 2-day feast at lunchtime for their hard-work and maturity during their first set of Mock Exams. With hundreds of chicken wings, 5 slices of pizza each, crisps and drinks, the chosen students were spoilt. All other students in the lunch hall were envious of the public display and were eager to find out how they could gain a place on future reward events. With nominations from their Head of Year, Form Tutors and students with no behaviour points, the VIP lunch meant all boys had the opportunity to be chosen. Upcoming events: Year 9 and 10 Upcoming rewards events: Thursday 24th Dec - Film night - Drama studio
Year 7 and 8 Upcoming rewards events: Wednesday 13th February – TUCK SHOP
Year 9, 10 and 11 Upcoming rewards events: Thursday 14th February – TUCK SHOP

Year 11—English Revision Pack Offer
Year 11 VIP Lunch
Because we feel you all, and your futures, are worth investing in, the English Department have bought English Language and Literature revision resources to help you all excel in your examinations. The pack itself would cost £24.94 in the shops however we have subsidised this price so that it only costs a mere £5. There is a guide for each unit in the exams, and each guide contains notes and activities which will give you more than what you need in the run up to exam time. Money to be paid via parent pay. Please speak to your English teacher for further infor-mation. Mr D Campbell Head of English
Excellent numbers for participation and the games were played very competitively but also in good spirit. The final was made up of 3 Griffith boys and 1 Rigby. A tie breaker game due to Godwil Amasse and Hugo Almachi, both of Griffith picking up the same amount of points in the final group saw Godwil beta Hugo 7-4. The points are as follows… 1st Place – Griffith: 400 points + 170 participation = 570 points 2nd Place – Rigby: 300 points + 100 participation = 400 points 3rd Place – Jones: 200 points + 100 participation = 300 points 4th Place – Gunstone: 100 points + 40 participation = 140 points

Last term saw the first meeting between Student Voice representatives and Mr Connolly. Prior to this meeting, Student voice representatives had canvassed the opinions of their peers, and rigorously discussed proposals to improve the school experience for all students.
Student Voice came up with the following proposals that will be put in place in the near future:
In order to make PSHCE days more relevant to students, Student Voice representatives will receive an overview of the PSCHE plans. To reduce the amount of litter left in the playground, Mr Connolly will investigate the possibility of introducing recycle bins in the playground. This continues the school’s environmentally conscious tradition which was recently displayed by the installation of solar panels. Student representatives were told by their peers that the time between receiving exam timetables and sitting exams was too short and didn’t allow them to adequately prepare for their exams. As such, going forward, departments will aim to produce these resources at least two weeks prior to exams taking place. In response to Year 8’s concerns about congestion around the basketball area, Mr Tynan will be assessing how we can make better use of the space.
Finally, the variety of school lunches were a concern that has been raised in numerous meetings. As such, a strategy has been developed to raise awareness of, and engagement with the lunch theme days. This will include providing a more prominent position for comment slips in the lunch hall and establishing a student group to discuss the content and advertising of these theme days. Thus far, your Student Voice Representatives have debated a range of issues that you, the students, have strong opinions about. Please continue to engage with your representatives in order to effect the change you want to see around your school. Mr D Dike Student Voice Co-ordinator
