DECEMBER 1, 2019 — THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

HOPEFUL EXPECTATION Our liturgical year begins with the season of Advent—a time of hopeful expectation of the coming of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day. Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, radiating God’s “light” (teachings) into all of human society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Romans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sun-day’s scriptures proclaim our Christian faith that Jesus is the One who will finally come to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“The attack on Pearl Harbor 78 years ago marks the first time since the War of 1812 that the United States was attacked by a foreign power. It’s also an occasion where we saw some incredible heroism. All we have to do is think about someone like Father Al Schmitt pushing people out of the USS Oklahoma before it sank, and while he lost his own life, he saved the lives of many others. In addition to our prayers for the eternal rest of those who died, I think we should also be praying for peace, so that these situations of war, where one nation rises up against another—that one day soon, they might end. And I think perhaps the current friendship in the Unit-ed States with both Japan and Germany is a good example that war isn’t something that lasts forever. There is recon-ciliation. There is peace.” Archbishop Broglio American Military Services

A Pearl Harbor Prayer December 7

O God of our Fathers, we guard in our hearts today the sacred memory of those who gave their lives on that day which will live in infamy. Bless us, O Lord, as we humble ourselves in Thy presence to remember our ship-mates and friends who served our country so valiantly. Let us not disgrace those who still lie in the quiet places through our indifference or forgetfulness. Rather, help us to always remember Pearl Harbor and help us to keep America alert. May we never forget that more than 2,000 of our sons, fathers, brothers, and friends were killed and more than 1,000 citizens of our land were wounded on Decem-ber 7, 1941. Their sacrifices were not in vain. They de-fended America’s freedom and demonstrated America’s goodness. Heavenly Father, we give thanks for the brave men who embodied your love by making this ultimate sac-rifice. You have declared “greater love hath no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). May we be willing to follow their example when duty calls. We also give thanks for those who survived the attack on our country and who went on with their lives in a way that portrayed honor to a watching world. They carried on with life even as they bore deep within them the haunting memories of what they witnessed, heard, and felt. Bless them with continued grace and mercy from your holy hand. Guide us and direct us in all that we do. Let us live to bring glory and honor to Thee. This we pray in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen

“The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” Douglas MacArthur
