From Our Pastor Dear Friends,
This Sunday our Church celebrates the feast day of the Presenta on of the Lord.
We are all familiar with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day which we celebrate every year. Why is there not a Parents’ Day where we celebrate father and mother together as a couple? Today should be a good day to focus on both parents together, as we see both parents of Jesus, Joseph and Mary, togeth-er make the long journey to Jerusalem to present their firstborn child in the Temple as the law of God
required. In the image of Joseph and Mary presen ng Jesus in the Temple, we have a wonderful model of husband and wife united in prac cing the faith and in raising their child in the faith. We read that “When the me came for their purifica on according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.”
Some people have a problem with this aspect of today’s celebra on: why would the baby Jesus, who is not in a posi on to say yes or no, be ini ated into the Jewish religion without his approval? This is a problem especially for those of us who ques on the value of infant bap sm. Some Chris ans today feel that bap sm has no value un l a child reaches the age of reason and then is able to decide for oneself. But this is not the example that Mary and Joseph are giving us today. In the biblical era, people saw the whole family as one body. The ques on of husband, wife and child belonging to different religions was unthinkable because religion was supposed to play a role in strengthening the family unity. Thus, we hear in the Acts of the Apostles that when certain men and women were converted, they were bap zed together with their en re household.
If parents are supposed to provide their children with the basic necessi es of life, what is more basic than one’s faith in God. No parents would think of allowing their children to decide whether they want to go to school or not, whether they want to learn the common language or not, whether they want to be a ci zen of their country or not. We make these decisions for them, knowing fully well that when they grow up, they may decide to con nue with what we gave them or abandon it. But only a foolish parent would refuse to send a child to school or teach a child their language and tradi on, all in the name of respec ng the child’s freedom to choose.
Similarly, parents have a responsibility to ini ate their chil-dren into their faith tradi ons. This is what we see today in the feast of the presenta on as Joseph and Mary present Baby Jesus in the Jewish Temple. As parents, we have the duty and privilege of raising our children in such a way that they grow up to become good and responsible ci zens as well as commi ed children of God. The example of Joseph and Mary show us that the best way to achieve this is not just by talking and shou ng at them but by leading the way and showing them by the example of our own lives.
Last week once again we had Catholic Schools Week which is a na onal celebra on of Catholic educa on and an opportunity to recognize the importance, the value, and the contribu ons of Catholic educa on to the Church and the world. I want to thank our School Staff, the school children and all of you who helped us make this week a special me here at St. Thomas of Villanova. Thank you for all your support toward our Catholic School.

Parish News
Walking in the dark alleys at night dressed in street clothes, we rescue underage girls waiting for customers to pick them up and be paid a small amount of money to augment their family sustenance. The poorest of the poor have fallen victim to the handlers who roam the desperate rural villag-es of our country promising parents "good jobs in the city" for their girls.
Girls ages 8 to 15 are locked in rooms and exposed to rape, diseases and murder. Initially, we offer medical and psychological care. Then, we provide education and shelter for the younger ones and teach a self-sustaining trade to the older girls so they may re-enter society with the abilities and the dignity to live fulfilling and productive lives. We have saved countless lives in our Home of Love, which temporarily houses and rehabilitates 50 residents at any one give time. But we have reached a plateau due to lack of facilities and cannot accommodate the numbers which are in dire need. We are on a mission to expand to accommodate 150 girls and are conducting a Capital campaign to raise $12M needed to accomplish this mission.
Sister Eileen from Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries will be in the Gathering Area today to answer ques ons about their mission and the Home of Love.

2020 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Come, follow me… and heal our world!
Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes, and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gi s. Please return your response as soon as possible.
The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal our world.”
In addi on to providing for ministries and services throughout the archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help here in our parish. For example, Appeal funds support our Religious Educa on Program; con nuing educa on efforts for priests; our VOICES high school youth group; and Lay Forma on Programs for Lay Pastoral staff and our Lay Volunteers serving in our liturgical ministries.
As we contemplate God’s many gi s to us, we should also reflect on our gra tude. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gra tude. Please give generously to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Do czego służy wiara?
Trzeba by więc zapytać się przede wszystkim o to, czego szuka ten świat.
Liczy się to, by zarabiać wystarczająco, by dobrze żyć, by mieć pewną pozycję społeczną, ciekawe życie, dobre zdrowie i, jeśli to możliwe, długie życie, by spotykało nas jak najwięcej korzyści i jak najmniej niedogodności.
W jakiej on znajduje się perspektywie?
To, do czego On dąży, to niebo…
To właśnie Matka Boża powiedziała św.
Teraz możemy to powiedzieć: wiara
To jedyny sposób, w zasięgu ludzkich możliwości, by wejść do życia wieczne-go.
Wiara chrześcijańska – most pozwalający nam przejść na drugi brzeg…
Do czego służy wiara? Po prostu do życia! I to życia na wieki…
