Fifth Sunday of Easter

Throughout the Easter season, we hear the story of the earliest Christian communities in readings from the Acts of the Apostles. We hear how the

people grappled with what it meant to place their faith and trust in the Lord, understanding that doing so called them to live differently—to follow Jesus’ way of love. This is more than a history lesson for us. As we hear how the people were drawn to Christ and learned to follow Jesus, we are invited to ask ourselves how fully we are taking the gospel to heart. Is Jesus our way, truth, and life? Do our daily actions announce the praises of the Lord?

CHANGE OF MIND AND HEART FROM NOW ON

During Lent, we participated in penitential practices and focused on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in order to turn our lives more fully to the Lord. However, the fruit of our Lenten practices is not supposed to end on Good Friday or Easter Sunday. Lent is our annual time to embrace spiritual renewal, which is intended to last. The change of mind and heart that we embraced in the weeks preceding Easter are to be our spiritual foundation, shaping our lives now and into the future. Pause for a moment and ask yourself what difference Lent made for you this year. If you can point to some particular change of mind, heart, or behavior, promise yourself that you will continue to live in this new way in the months and years to come. If Lent did not have a special impact on your life this year, now is the time to invite the Lord to show you the way to more meaningful and faith-filled living in the future.

DON’T BE AFRAID. DO THE WORKS OF CHRIST

In the Gospel passage we heard today, Jesus was preparing the apostles for a time when he would not be with them physically. Jesus wanted to reassure the apostles, even though he knew they were having a difficult time understanding. We sometimes struggle to grasp the Lord’s ways, too. We know that God is with us in Christ through the Holy Spirit, and yet, when we really have to act in accord with our faith, we sometimes falter. Jesus tells us to not be afraid. Have faith in Christ and do his works. We may be surprised at what we are able to do when we trust and follow Jesus’ way. And we are assured that God will be with us through it all.

BINGO & QUEEN OF HEARTS Due to the Mandates issued by the Missouri Gaming Commission, State and Local Government, there will be no Bingo or Queen of Hearts until further notice. We miss all of our Wonderful Patrons and hope you stay Safe and Healthy. This is a rapidly changing situation and will be reassessed if anything changes.

Please check back for future updates. Thank You, The St. Simon Bingo Committee

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Ann Rozycke Morrison, niece of Ken & Sharon Hayes. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Outreach Opportunities There have been many requests from generous parishioners wanting to know what they can do to help those in need. Two opportunities have been identified if you would like to help those less fortunate during this difficult time: 1) Hancock School. For several years, St. Simon School has prepared sack lunches for elementary school children in need. While the school is closed, the need is still there and even greater. St. Simon School is currently collecting the following items to assist:

• Fruit snacks, applesauce cups, and pudding cups

• Microwave popcorn, trail mix

• Cookies, granola bars, rice crispy treats, peanut butter crackers

• Mac 'n cheese, soup / ravioli

• Ramen noodles, instant oatmeal

• Kool-aid jammers 2) Peter and Paul Men's homeless shelter is in need of personal hygiene products for men. This includes:

• Disposable razor blades and shave cream

• Tooth brushes and toothpaste

• Soap

• Deodorant Donations can be dropped off in the church lobby or even outside the church doors if this is preferred. The office staff will sort and organize the items and make sure they are taken to these two organizations.

MAY SPIRITUAL COMPONENT TO PRAY AT HOME

One of the things that has been uplifting to me during this COVID-19 pandemic has been my good and faithful friends. Some examples: my high school classmate Kurt who lives in Old Lyme, CT who has called to chat about my homilies that he watched on our live-stream Masses; a group of college friends who shared a Zoom happy hour with me; another high school friend Beth of Portland, OR who called just to check on me and see how I was doing; a group of priest-friends have been texting and checking-in with each other almost daily, sharing ideas, fears, concerns, and funny stories to encourage one another; a group of friends from one of my former parish assignments have hosted semi-weekly Zoom dinners together. These are just some of the examples that I see God being present to me during these difficult days, examples of God’s love being shown to me through their care and affection for me, examples of faithful and faith-filled friends who challenge me to be the same for others. One of my favorite passages in the Bible comes from the Book of Sirach in the Old Testament; it is part of the “wisdom literature”, and it deals with many things of daily life – education, poverty, wealth, religious worship, the law, as well as friendship. In chapter 6 of the Book of Sirach, the writer describes true friendship; here is the translation of Sirach 6:14-17 that I’ve had memorized since high school:

A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter; he who finds one finds a treasure. A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth.

A faithful friend is a life-saving remedy, such as he who fears God finds;

for he who fears God behaves accordingly, and his friend will be like himself.

As we enter the month of May, many Christians could talk about Mary, the mother of Jesus, being a faithful friend and a sturdy shelter for them in their lives; others could talk about a special devotion to a particular saint as being a source of strength and friendship in their lives. Who have been some of your “faithful friends” in your life, those relationships that have helped show

God’s love and God’s presence to you during the ups and downs of life? Fr. Brad

Public Square Rosary Saturday May 16th from 12:00 - 12:30pm

St. Catherine Laboure Parish 9740 Sappington Rd, in front of the Blessed Mother stat-ue. Last month we all kept our distances and it went well. May is traditionally dedicated to Mary, Our Mother, when we remember our own earthly mothers also. The first Fatima apparition occurred on May 13th1917. Saint Lucia, one of the visionaries, said “There is no problem, no matter how difficult is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.”

Changes to Safe Environment Compliance The Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new system for safe environment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone ministering to minors and vulnerable adults (clergy, employees and volunteers) in the Archdiocese are required and asked to register in the new system before December 31, 2020. This includes those new to service and those who are currently in service. For those who have already attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system. In addition to attending a live Protecting God’s Children workshop, all clergy, volunteers, and employees will register for an updated background screening, view two new online training modules on abuse reporting and the Code of Ethical Conduct, and agree to the updated Code of Ethical Conduct. Please go to www.preventandprotectstl.org to register and contact your parish Child Safety Coordinator, Maggie Moore, with any further questions or if you need assistance. All of our volunteers, room parents, coaches, assistant coaches, referees, or umpires who have not registered on the new website are encouraged to do it now. Below is a copy of the Archdiocese’s User Registration form outlining the steps to register. If you have any questions please contact me, or the email address at the bottom of the registration guidelines. Thank you!
