Dynamic Catholic Alive!

A note from our Pastor:

The Body of Christ The readings today remind us that we are all part of the Body of Christ. God has provided each of us with a set of gifts and He expects us to use those gifts effectively for the benefit of His entire body even when that means going outside of our comfort zone. Sometimes we might underestimate our gifts or think that our special gifts don’t matter, but we are all unique and unrepeatable and made in the image and likeness of God! When we undervalue our gifts we undervalue the gifts that God gave us. Spend some silent time with Jesus to help you discern your gifts and ask Him how He wants you to use them. Where are you being called this week? www.archstl.org/live-the-faith

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our Gospel today continues Jesus Sermon on the Plain, in which we heard Luke's version of the Beatitudes. This week, Jesus gives us new commandments, telling us how to live and act in the world as his disciples, rooted in the radical love of God for humanity. It reminds us of his later speech about loving one another as he loves us, in other words with a God-like love, the kind we see in

today's psalm about God's mercy. How else could we do as Jesus tells us by loving our enemies, which seems impossible, until we remember that God gave us the example of Jesus, who is like God but also like us? David understands this merciful love when he spares the life of his enemy in the first reading. Finally, Paul tells us that we will become like Jesus if we act as he did, as God does. RADICAL LOVE Have you ever read or heard anything about Jesus being called a radical ? What such a statement ignores is that God has been a radical all through salvation history. What kind of superior being forgives the kind of unloving actions humankind has committed through the centuries? Answer: a God of radical mercy, kindness, love. In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches that, like himself, like God, we must love with God-like radical compassion, even those who are our enemies. Didn't Jesus give us an extreme example, forgiving those who put him to death? How difficult it is to be like God, like Jesus, forgiving, even loving, the very people who have treated us badly! The first reading gives another example. David was under a death sentence by King Saul, who had become David's enemy through jealousy. Given an opportunity to murder Saul in his sleep, David chose to let him live, out of respect for God's will toward Saul. David recognized that the only way for him to do God's will was to love Saul, his enemy, enough to refrain from being judge, jury, and executioner. BEARING A GOD-LIKE IMAGE Today's psalm praises God for showing mercy toward us, even though we are weak-willed and consistently in need of forgiveness. God is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked, too, and calls us to show this God-like mercy to all. In Paul's letter to the Corinthians, he tells us that by living and loving as Jesus did, as new creatures, we will bear his image as well. That being the case, and knowing that we are all children of a merciful God, made in God's image and likeness, we take on the image of Jesus through God-like kindness and compassion. That word radical comes from the Latin word for root (radix)--we hear this truth every year during the season of Advent. One of the names of the Promised One, Jesus, is Root of Jesse--indeed, a radical from before his birth. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Dear Parishioners of St. Simon’s, I wanted to make you aware of a couple of opportunities through Aquinas Institute here in St. Louis that are coming this March. On Tuesday, March 5th, Sr. Maribeth Howell (a former Old Testament professor of mine from Kenrick Seminary) will give the presentation, “Praying in Difficult Times: how the Psalms of Lament can be signs of hope.” The presentation is from 11:30am to 1pm. The second opportunity is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th, from 9am to 3pm; it is entitled “Thomas Merton on violence and racism” by Fr. Daniel Horan, OFM. This day is sponsored by the Peace and Justice Commission of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis and the Incarnate Word Foundation. Both events require a reservation, which can be done by calling Diane Henderson at Aquinas Institute; her phone number is 314-256-8856. I also wanted to give you another reminder about our parish day of recollection coming up on Saturday, March 30th. I’m very excited for Mr. Mike Burke to join us for that day; Mike brings his experience of our Catholic faith and his battle against cystic fibrosis to talk about life’s challenges and living out our faith with hope. Mike and I go way back – he and I are classmates from our days at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton/St. Robert Regional Grade School! I hope you will be able to join me on Saturday, March 30th! Opportunities to register for this day will be coming soon. Have a healthy and holy week! St. Simon the Apostle pray for us! Fr. Brad

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

February 24, 2019 - Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time “But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without expecting anything back.” (Luke 6:35) Easier said than done, right? But, if we are to imitate Christ, most of us need to practice mercy and compassion more frequently. Start with the little daily annoyances that we experience, the unkind word or hateful glance we receive. Instead of plotting revenge on that person, try saying a quick prayer for that person. Mercy and compassion will put us on the path to holiness.

ONLINE GIVING Most of our parishioners are blessed with consistent and dependable paychecks. Have you ever thought about how you would manage your bills and schedule your payments if you were never sure how much money you were going to have in your bank account? This is a problem that our parish faces every month. While we are most grateful for any gift that any parishioner can give at any time, to help us maintain a more consistent cash flow, we have established an online giving program. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure way of giving, please check out our website at https://www.stsimonchurch.org/ and click on the Online Giving picture near the top of the page.

Cases for Smiles Pillowcase Event The Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary is once again hosting a pillowcase sewing event for the organization, Case for Smiles. We will be sewing pillowcases for children going through treatments at area children’s hospitals. No sewing skills are needed as there are many tasks that do not involve sewing (and some that do!). This fun event is happening on Tuesday, March 19th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Lower Church Hall. You do not have to stay the entire time. You can come and help as long as you want. You may have so much fun, you won’t want to leave! We welcome anyone who wants to come and have fun while helping children with cancer and other long term illnesses. All parishioners (and their friends, family and neighbors) are invited to join us in making brightly colored pillowcases for children in the hospital going through chemo and other lifesaving treatments. This event is not limited to adults. If anyone has any questions, call Diane at 845-8442. See you on March 19th! We are also collecting 100% cotton material in bright, child friendly prints and colors. Please drop off material donations in the marked bin in the church lobby before March 19th.
